A McClendon Thanksgiving (McClendon Holiday) by Sean D. Young
A McClendon Thanksgiving (McClendon Holiday) - Sean D. Young

I fell in love with the McClendon brood at first book.  Ms. Young extended a ready invitation into the workings of a family.  Despite the flaws and dysfunction, the bond is strong and love permeates the dynamics.  A McClendon Thanksgiving is a friends to lovers story with a new beginning thrown in for good measure.  Big dreams led Faith to NYC, heartache brought her back home.  Will a renewed friendship, bring her the love of a lifetime?  Michael broke his own heart when he lost the girl of his dreams to the temptation of the big city.  Now she's back a little bit wiser and a lot more broken. Can he help heal her broken heart and gain a chance at forever with the woman he loves? Sweet love and second chances are a temptation make a great combination.

'Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving (Bookshelf) - Dav Pilkey

Eight grade school children go on a field trip to a turkey farm the day before Thanksgiving where they meet eight turkeys with names.  When the children discover that their new turkey friends are intended to be Thanksgiving dinner the next day, they save them by hiding the turkeys under their shirts and sneaking them back to school on the bus.  The next day, instead of eating turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, they each have a turkey as a guest for Thanksgiving dinner.  The story is told in the same style as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

This would be a good book to read to the class the day before Thanksgiving break.  It can be used to teach a lesson about rhyming words.  The students can also use illustrations and context clues to help them decipher unknown text (boarded, terrain, clatter).

The lexile level for this book is NP

Scholastic level is at P

Not Perfect But Sweet
Vincent's Thanksgiving Date - R. Cooper

Vincent's Thanksgiving Date by B Cooper is a short moment in time leading up to Thanksgiving in Vincent's life. A change can happen if he could just pluck up the courage this once and let it happen. He meets Cory who is a gentle, adorable, little neighbor who sees something in Vincent and is willing to gently, ease his anxieties while getting under Vincent's skin. This tale is low on the 'hot-o-meter' Cooper chose instead to focus on character interaction to tell the story. Now to be honest I thought the ending was a bit abrupt but I understood why Cooper ended it there. The tale would have worked so well if it'd had more time to become a full-length novel. I liked these characters enough I wanted to see a lot more. Another sweet little plus is that Corey was 'of color' and to be honest, it's always refreshing in this genre to have characters of many cultures and races together. It shouldn't be a big deal.
