Goodreads' Censorship: G.R. Reader's Off-Topic
OFF-TOPIC: The Story of an Internet Revolt by G.R. Reader - G.R. Reader
The closest source I have to hand "the doctrine that knowledge, truth and morality exist in relation to culture, society, or historical context, and are not absolute" does seem to cover some of the arguments dealing with Goodreads' censorship. I don't deny that the world's a complex place but when you get down to the nitty gritty I don't see a third space we've carved out for yourselves between relative and absolute values. Literature is not just a social pursuit - if it was, it would be a hobby. Name an education free of the teaching of it in our society? And why would it be universal to our society in that way? It is, in Donne's sense, involved with our social sphere in a way that buying small-gauge railway models is not. But if you are determined that literature is just a social pursuit then indeed, we have no further point to discuss.

Amazon are compelling us. One may wish to view it simply as they are offering each of us a choice, and that if sufficient numbers of us choose then we will have in effect voted to change our society - in ways we may not have considered, in ways we may not want, in ways that a minority of us who have never purchased anything from them are powerless to resist. They are no more compelling us than cigarette manufacturers, or the government, or drug dealers, or manufacturers of greenhouse gases, or the nazis, and so on, and so on. I see the logic of laissez-faire capitalism, even extended to the cultural and social sphere.

Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt
OFF-TOPIC: The Story of an Internet Revolt by G.R. Reader - G.R. Reader Its worth reading this book for people who are active here, but it is a bit repetitive and overblown at times. Fundamentally, we are just discussing a website and it doesn't really matter. So the rhetoric is over the top. However, I have contributed quite a bit of content to Goodreads and Goodreads does not seem to understand its business model.

If they continue to tolerate authors behaving badly and all this sock puppet activity by authors, they will get a reputation for unreliability and everyone, will just move elsewhere.

There is not a great deal that is ground shaking about Goodreads and it could be replaced easily and will be, if they don't stop letting themselves be used by unscrupulous authors and side with authors who have readerships measured in the dozens over their top reviewers.

I understand that Goodreads has to protect itself against libel suits, but there is nothing to stop them removing bogus reviews and sock puppets. Otherwise, people will go elsewhere.

Best of 2013 Part III: Surprises (Bad)!
OFF-TOPIC: The Story of an Internet Revolt by G.R. Reader - G.R. Reader
Star Trek: Movie Adaptation (Star Trek - Robert Orci,Alex Kurtzman,Mike Johnson,David Messina
Rosie the Riveter: Women Working on the Homefront in World War II - Penny Colman
Shakespeare's London on 5 Groats a Day - Richard Tames
The Gallery of Regrettable Food: Highlights from Classic American Recipe Books - James Lileks
Who Could That Be At This Hour? - Lemony Snicket,Seth
The Library: An Illustrated History - Stuart A.P. Murray,Nicholas A. Basbanes,Donald G. Davis Jr.

However, not all of the surprises were good this year. While I was not affect in that I had no reviews deleted, I was hurt and appalled at what had happened to a community I'd come to care a great deal about. I'm glad that it led me here to Booklikes, but it rather soured me on reading for a bit. Also, several books I'd been looking forward to for quite awhile turned out to be less then ideal.
