Doom Doom Doom
Doomboy - Tony Sandoval

The story of a group of friends and scenesters, while there are a few scenes where adults are shown, mainly the comic focuses on the kids as they deal with their shit.  What is most interesting to me in this story is the weird things that are happening in the background that are never quite explained.  The squids in sky, the strange creatures lurking in the gray wind.

I really liked the subdued feeling of the whole thing, even when the characters have to fight, it seems like they see it as something inevitable they just have to get through.  Just the way life would seem after dealing with a tragic loss.

Which is what the story is basically about, a teenaged guy dealing with the death of a loved one.  When he channels his feelings into music and suddenly becomes the focus of a rock cult, it's not what he'd intended.

Interesting story, loved the artwork, overall, I'd recommend this for people who enjoy slightly weird, stories about young kids figuring things out, like Sam Alden.

Rendez-vous in Phoenix - Tony Sandoval

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I always have been curious about the whole Mexico-border thing, and this one tells it from a personal view. That of Tony who wants to go over the border so he can be with his girlfriend who lives in America. I already knew the journey wouldn’t be easy (I have read enough books about the topic, seen a few movies), but it was just heartbreaking to see Tony go through all the things he went through. All he wants is an honest life with a possibility to grow, to be better. And of course living with his lovely girlfriend.

I also felt sorry for his girlfriend, I can’t imagine how it must feel to worry that your boyfriend will not get over the border, or will get killed while doing so, or will never get out of jail because of the border-crossing. The parts where he called her when something went wrong, or when it eventually does go right (no spoiler, come on guys, you can read everywhere that he is currently living in another country that isn’t Mexico), those parts were just heartbreaking, and I sniffled. At the earlier parts because I just felt so sorry for both of them, and then the last part because I was so happy that they could be together and be happy.

The times he crossed the border, but also the times that he told us about what happened when one crosses the border, the dangers, it just broke my heart.

The author/illustrator did a brilliant job on everything, I loved how the art looked, I loved how the characters looked. It was just all fantastic.

At the end we also have some sketches, and it was just lovely to see his work before it was coloured/finished.

All in all, this is one book I would recommend to everyone.

A Glance Backward
Glance Backward HC - Pierre Paquet,Tony Sandoval

This was such a weird book. And although I normally really like weird books, this one wasn't weird in a good way. Okay, even the covers looks a bit weird, I admit, but it still was completely different from what I expected.

After Joey gets trapped in the walls of his basement, he tries to find the way back home and in the mean times has some kind of adventures (my best guess of what's happening).

Joey's story feels like a combination of a lot of short stories that don't really have that much to do with each other. The world is weird, I got the feeling it was supposed to be a little bit like Alice in Wonderland or The Little Prince, but it wasn't working for me. I didn't enjoy reading it.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Doomboy
Doomboy - Tony Sandoval Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of a teenage boy. His girlfriend dies and he uses his music (heavy metal) to express his grief. What he doesn't know is that the whole town can hear him playing and he becomes a legend.

It takes you back to being a teenager, with all its teen angst, drama, friendship and rock music.

I found the artwork to be really good, and it fits the story really well. And at times it is downright beautiful. And it uses the images to tell the story just as much as with words.
The only issue I had with the artwork was that in the beginning I had trouble figuring out if some of the characters were male or female. Long haired heavy metal boys looked a lot like the girls, which lead to some confusion.

The story is good, it includes a lot of standard teenage issues as well as dealing with the loss of someone you love.

I did however have an issue with the beginning of the story. I found it confusing, I wasn't sure what was happening or what the story was about. There seemed to be a lot of characters, and it took me a while to figure out who they were and what was happening. I'm glad I kept reading though, as it gets a lot better, and well worth reading.

All in all a good read. The story is pretty average, but the artwork makes it worth your time!
