Tor.com's Ebook of the Month Club - Free *and* possibly a candidate for the Magical Realism square
The Necessary Beggar - Susan Palwick

One of my friends on Goodreads called it a hybrid of SF and magical realism, and a couple people tagged it as "magical realism." So it'd maybe work? I haven't read it myself.

You have until 11:59 PM ET on August 16th to download it (US and Canada only).

This month's free ebook from publisher TOR
The Murders of Molly Southbourne - Tade Thompson

In order to download free, you do need to subscribe your email address.  They don't flood you with other marketing emails.  You do have to act lightning fast when you get the email because these stay available free almost no time.  This one is short at 128 pages.

There's a bookclub on booklikes for these at http://booklikes.com/book-clubs/88/tor-monthly-free-ebook-science-fiction-and-fantasy   (TOR publishes mainly science fiction and fantasy genre books).  Publisher page for book.

Tacoma free over at Humble Bundle, while supplies last (or until the 22 hours are up)

Ooh. If I didn't already own it, I'd get it. And I say this despite the bouts of motion sickness it gave me.

It's less a game than a story in videogame form. Your character is investigating an incident at a space station that was populated by 6 humans, their cat, and an AI named ODIN. My favorite characters were ODIN and Sareh, the station medic who struggled with panic attacks, although I also enjoyed trying to track down the cat in each scene.

No major spoilers, but since I spent the entire game worrying that I was going to see the moment when the cat died:

the cat gets through the whole thing just fine.

(spoiler show)

I reviewed the game on my blog and gave it 3.5 stars on LibraryThing. I felt it was worth paying for, and it's definitely worth getting for free.

Tor.com’s eBook of the Month Club: The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi
The Collapsing Empire - John Scalzi

I haven't posted about the last few (and forgot to download them in time as well). I had thought this was one of their offerings in a previous month, but I don't see it in my records, so either I didn't download it or I'm remembering wrong.

Anyway, folks in the US and Canada have until 11:59 PM ET March 15th to download this.

The Only Harmless Great Thing - Brooke Bolander

In order to download free, you do need to subscribe your email address.  They don't flood you with other marketing emails.  You do have to act lightning fast when you get the email because these stay available free almost no time.

This one I'd consider a novella or short story at only 96 pages.  Usually it's a full length novel, often the first of an ongoing series with an upcoming new release.
