The book flow is going well. I forgot to update and subjects discussed have been about the time she was raped and how they colored her life in immediate and far reaching ways. It was very tough to read, I can't imagine how tough it was to write about.

Also discussions of colorism in the African American community and how she got her first acting jobs and how she was treated on set on shows like Friends.

OMG this is so good! I am loving this so far. Union has a way with words and she totally hits upon the issue you have as a black kid in school trying to be part of the gang (mostly white kids) and also trying to hang onto your blackness when you are with your family.

My parents gave me the pep talk when I started school, the same speech all black parents give their kids: You’re gonna have to be bigger, badder, better, just to be considered equal. You’re gonna have to do twice as much work and you’re not going to get any credit for your accomplishments or for overcoming adversity. Most black people grow accustomed to the fact that we have to excel just to be seen as existing, and this is a lesson passed down from generation to generation. You can either be Super Negro or the forgotten Negro."

Reading all these stories together, I wondered if I was really brave enough to share all of this.

I went and put a ton of books on hold. I always forget about physical books since I got on an ebook borrow binge last year. My librarian was nice enough to remind me we have all the books (seriously) I would just need to do holds. I feel like a moron.
