Bookish Whine

A fibromyalgia flare hit me earlier this week and my arms hurt so badly from shoulder to fingertip that I can't hold my big-ass 500+ page trade paperback open for more than a few minutes at a time. Which is fine, I guess, because once I clock off from work that's about how long I can concentrate on any one thing. I've read maybe 20 pages in the last four days. I tried switching to an e-book on my much lighter Kindle, but I'm a one-book-at-a-time kind of woman and I couldn't get into it. Blargh. I'm just going to sit here for a while and gaze at this rainbow butterfly unicorn kitten and ponder my compulsive need to buy certain books in physical form, my soul-deep abhorrence to cracking book spines, and other such first-world "problems."

Internet Blues

So I've been steering myself to only the most fun, frivolous, candy-like reading for the last few weeks and I've been wondering why. Not that reading those things is bad, but I don't usually read ONLY Adventure Time comics and Doctor Who books.

Turns out it is just internet-induced depression.

There are so many things going on that are terrible and don't seem to be getting any better (this is true in life as well, but I am not fed a constant stream of it to be more aware). Fucking GamerGate, STGRB, MRAs, constant online harassment of women, trans people and PoC. I'm on a constant rage-high, and it is draining my battery. I know I should probably just take a social media break or something, but I care about a lot of these things and don't want to just back out and pretend they aren't there. Not too long ago, I got jumped on by some hashtag-camping GGer on Twitter, and that is ridiculously mild compared with what other more recognizable people have to deal with.

I guess all I'm really saying is the world is full of assholes and I'm having a hard time dealing with it lately.

Maybe it's also a warning. Anyone that comes around me talking about "meninism," "ethics in game journalism," "my racist/sexist/transphobic/homophobic comment was a joke," "reverse racism/sexism," or any combination thereof can just get the fuck out right now.

Scribd comics

Man, I love that Scribd has comics. I've been on a binge, but they don't have the best sorting system. You start with one volume, moving through to the next and the next and then BAM, you have an issue out of order that you didn't even realize you missed. I get that this is totally new for them, but I really hope it is something they fix soon. Also, having only one random middle issue of a series? Not helpful.

Reading progress update: I've read 90 out of 272 pages.
Looking for Alaska - John Green

I got through 30 pages before another glaring typo jumped out at me. It's another case of missing punctuation in dialogue. When some SPAs are defending their shoddy editing by saying trad-pub books have lots of errors too, they might be talking about this book. :p

Reading progress update: I've read 56 out of 272 pages.
Looking for Alaska - John Green

Since the last typo check-in, I've found two cases of missing punctuation, both in dialogue, and now someone just got his hair "tussled" instead of "tousled" . . . unless his hair actually put up a fight, in which case "tussled" might fit, I suppose. . .

Call me fussy, but I expect better of traditional publishers, especially one of the Big 5. I expect to see this many typos in a book, but not before page 60. What happened? Did all the editors switch to decaf the day of the final proofread? *scratches head*
