Crimson Souls
Crimson Souls - William Holden Crimson Souls - William Holden
DNF at 48%

I normally enjoy the author's works and I liked all books that I have already ready by William Holden, but this one unfortunately didn't work for me at all. I expected in the first place historical erotica in the style of his Thomas Newton series, but I what I got was rather an extended version of [b:Grave Desires|27073995|Grave Desires|William Holden|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1444490916s/27073995.jpg|47116183], that I liked as anthology, but that I wouldn't have picked up as a full-length novel. I'm just not a regular reader of the genre.

All in all, if you liked Grave Desires, a finalist of the 28th Lambda Award in the category gay erotica, or if you understand and appreciate the GAY EROTICA HORROR genre, you have to read it, because I don't know many authors who are active in this genre.
I just don't want this book ends up in the wrong hands.

You probably think, why she reads Haloween horror stories in the Advent season where everyone is supposed to read sweet romance books that smell of roasted almonds, cinnamon and glühwein, that are sweet and cute and... *sorry, mama!*.. sooo fucking predictable in their HEA and their foreseeable turns and twists and...soooo christmassilly similar...

There are two reasons...oh, actually there are more than one, but I don't want to bother you with mathematics:

imageIt's [a:William Holden|2900084|William Holden|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1448465037p2/2900084.jpg]. One of those numerous great authors that are still remained- unfortunately- undiscovered by the majority of MM readers. WHAT A SHAME.

image It is [a:William Holden|2900084|William Holden|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1448465037p2/2900084.jpg], who is FOR ME one of the best authors of a historical gay erotica. But actually his home field is HORROR. And I NORMALLY don't watch and read horror. I got used to this thought. BUT, on the other hand, as a teenager I was VERY fond of Stephen King. Why do I avoid the genre NOW?! Why not to try it again? Besides...*see above*

As I considered myself as a NON-HORROR and a NON-Anthology's fan, I was positively surprised how I really enjoyed this horror collection. I think that EVERY single story could be a good basis for a long length novel. But on the other hand, I'm glad that they ARE short stories. What I LIKE most of all here: they all, really all, have an ending you won't expect. EVERY SINGLE STORY is totally utterly unpredictable. Hot, thrilling, very entertaining and good written. What do I need more?!

For every gay horror erotica fan, for every gay anthology fan and for everyone who LIKES to try something different HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

My personal overview:

Sliver
Conclusion: Are you sure you can blindly trust your life partner?

The Midnight Barker
"I am everything you desire. I am everything you fear." Vampires of another art. I'm safe. As a woman.

Jigsaw
Eye for an eye.. That was very bloody. But without any sexual context. (I'd go up to the end.)

Riverrum
The porniest until now. Everyone got what he wanted or did I understand it wrong?!

The Pull
It was a proper revenge (in name of all hurt EXs). VERY BLOODY MESSY revenge.

The last train
Orgasm as an energy supplier. HOOOT.

Consumed
An old regular vampire family. But a bit different ending. Why not?

The Dark One
An old acquaintance, but a different victim...

The Lustrum
Probably the best story of this anthology.

Skip Deep
That was pretty disgusting insecting!

Jack
Here's the ANSWER why I don't think pumpkins are tasteful!

The Thief Taker
The Thief Taker - William Holden image

DON'T READ this book if you:

1) don't like/don't read/don't understand GAY EROTICA

2) want a sweet mm-romance. IT. IS. NOT.

3)If you haven't read Secret Societies, ended. Thomas fled from London, the city that gave him not just a roof over his head but a caring and loving home that he had never known in his life and that then cruelly took it away from him. He made his way towards Paris full of hopes for a new life with Pierre Baptiste, an attractive wealthy trader from France, whom he had become acquainted with at the Mother Clap's establishment. But don't expect a sweet reunion of the both in a city of love - buckle up!

[a:William Holden|2900084|William Holden|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1448465037p2/2900084.jpg] stays true to his writing style. His erotica has nothing to do with clean bed linens and washed bodies. He shocks, provokes, surprises and wows readers with graphical descriptions and animalictic sex scenes. Sex made by William Holden is often dirty, unclean, rough, aggressive and reeking. You frequently find shit and seed on the same line. And there is much of this kind of sex.

It is not about LOVE, it is about LUST, SEX and FUCK. (Did I mention that we're talking about GAY EROTICA here?) Of course it is also about relationships and building partnerships, though not in a candy-manner way.

What I found really great in this series: Along with many sex scenes (sorry if you feel being violated by it- but it is a requirement of the genre), it has also a lot of well thought out plot and a very intriguing storyline, that kept me glued to the pages. And the language, the word building!..*sigh* What a pleasure this gentlemanly dirty talk out of 18th century! The author succeeded in creating a credible historical ambience.

[b:The Thief Taker|18342353|The Thief Taker|William Holden|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1384260419s/18342353.jpg|25897687] has more twists and turns than the first book. One of the author 's specialities - you never know who is a good guy and who is an evil. It could happen that on the next page one of the most likeable characters suddenly turns into an insidious traitor. And vice versa. Totally unpredictable.

I like the ending. We left our hero in good hands, full of hopes on the threshold of new beginnings. I can't talk about a cliffhanger, because it ends well and solved, but some questions remained unanswered. That also considers that a new sequel will be coming and that makes me happy!

Even if I'm an addicted kindle reader, I pay many attention to the covers of my books. The second book, also like the first book, provides a very atmospheric and beautiful cover, that unfortunately also the reason for a wrong interpretation of its genre.

All in all, a solid historical erotica, that just needs to be invented by the right readers.

Recommended.

Audrey and Bill: A Romantic Biography of Audrey Hepburn and William Holden by Edward Z. Epstein
Audrey and Bill: A Romantic Biography of Audrey Hepburn and William Holden - Edward Z. Epstein

Roman Holiday is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's a wonderful feelgood movie and Audrey Hepburn together with Gregory Peck make the movie truly marvelous. Sabrina is also a good movie, but I have always preferred Bogart to Holden so I've never really cared that much about his role in the movie, but someone that cared very much was Audrey Hepburn, she fell in love with him. But their romance was doomed from the start...

This book has been lying and waiting to be read since I requested it from Edelweiss and today did I pick it to read by chance. It's a fast read, started to read it this morning when I was out walking my cat, read 10% of it during the "walk", well Caesar was mostly lying on the grass. Thank God for the kindle app on my iPhone!

I never thought I would give the book 4 stars. I thought 3-3.5 would perhaps be sufficiently when I started to read it, but it was such an enjoyable book. Sure most information about Audrey Hepburn and William Holden can you find on the internet, there are no big exposes in this book. But it's a great book about a doomed romance between two iconic movie stars.

I recommend this book to fans of the old Tinseltown. To people like me that love the old movies, the old movie stars.

William Holden and Audrey Hepburn may never have gotten a happily ever after life, but they got for a while during the filming of Sabrina a great time together.

I received this copy from the publisher through Edelweiss in return for an honest review! Thank you!
