Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch (Snow Like Ashes #1)
Snow Like Ashes - Sara Raasch

No matter what happens, no matter who turns on me, no matter what pompous swine thinks he has power over me, I am still me. I will always be me.

For those of you that have no expectations whatsoever about Snow Like Ashes, I think you will enjoy this book more than people who had quite high expectations from this book. I. LOVED. THIS. There were some things that couldn’t really let me give this a 5 star rating, but honestly, who cares? I still loved this!

From the premise of the story, I was already really intrigued by this world. From past reviews I’ve read, people said that there was way too much info-dumping. So, when I went into this, I literally got out my notebook to take notes on this. I’m not lying. So, imagine to my surprise when I understood everything perfectly! :D

Meira is an unforgettable character, and she made this story a thousand times better. Meira reminded me what it was like when a character isn’t stubborn—they’re fiercely determined. Meira is probably one of the most practical characters I’ve read about this year.

I drop a curtsy and turn away from their assessments, making for the terrace doors. Let them think whatever they like. Let them conspire and say horrible things about me. This isn’t my kingdom.

She doesn’t make herself sound like she’s arrogant, Meira was a different character that was extremely refreshing. She was a blend of fierce, sassy, and sometimes she added humor in the perfect situations. :D But at the same time she grew so much and actually learned from past mistakes and situations.

“Should we hug or something?”

Sir rolls his eyes. “Get your weapon. We head for Cordell.”

The setting of this story is probably the most hardest aspect, because there are eight kingdoms: four fall under the Seasons and four fall under the Rhythm kingdoms. There are eight conduits (as described) that each have an object that wields power. Each kingdom has it’s king or queen—both in other cases. There are some things to keep track of, but it’s not difficult to be honest.

The pacing of this story felt extremely fast for me, and I loved the way how unexpected things kept on happening! The plot ended up connecting so well together!

Believe it or not, I figured out some of the major “plot twists”, and if you have read Snow Like Ashes, then let me know below if you saw any of these coming or not! So, I figured out:

One: I knew Meira was related to Hannah in some way when she found out that people could also be hosts. I knew there was a reason Hannah was talking to Meira but not Mather. Also, in the flashbacks, they show the baby’s hand, but then if Sir and Allyson had to say they’d hide the truth, then why would everyone know that Mather is Hannah’s son? I had a feeling something was off with that. If Mather would’ve been Hannah’s son then he would’ve been able to do something with the magic.

(spoiler show)

I KNOW I FEEL SO GENIOUS RIGHT NOW. Believe it or not guys this is the first time I’ve seen a plot twist coming so I feel very proud. XD. I know . . . I know . . .

Overall, Snow Like Ashes is a book that took me quite by surprise. I think the reason was that I went into this book expecting to hate it or be really disappointed or something. I really loved the main character!  And the fantasy world, although a bit overwhelming at first was really unique after you learn more about it. This story is so fast-paced and fun!

Thanks for reading my review everyone! Hope you have a great day and until the next one!

P.S. For those of you on BookLikes, I’m really sorry I haven’t been updating and keeping up with my news feed posts. I’ve been extremely busy this past week with party planning and my annual piano concert. Both of these things ended on Friday, but then I had to catch up with extra volunteering. Now, I think I’m less busy, but I haven’t had time to come on BookLikes and keep up with reading the books I’m supposed to be reading as much. I’m so sorry for that, guys!

I think now that I’m more free I might be more active on this now, and I need to catch up on the huge reading pile I’ve made for myself . . .

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1)
The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse-Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends -- one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena -- Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

This book was fun! I loved the premise and idea for this book—having to go to a camp for Half-Bloods if you’re the son/daughter of a Greek God?! COUNT ME IN! :D

“‘Braccas meas vescimini!

I wasn’t sure where the Latin came from. I think it meant ‘Eat my pants!’”

Percy was just such a fun and sassy character to read about. He uses sarcasm in a way that makes it funny, and it doesn’t make the situation sound whiny! Also, I know I shouldn’t be doing this, but Annabeth is 1 000 TIMES BETTER in this book! She’s smart, and she’s also sassy! She always comes up with stuff to get Percy and Grover out of the worst situations, and she works the best under pressure from the group.

“‘What if it lines up like it did in the Trojan War ... Athena versus Poseidon?’

‘I don't know. But I just know that I'll be fighting next to you.’

‘Why?’

‘Because you're my friend, Seaweed Brain. Any more stupid questions?’

BUT, ALL OF THESE GUYS ARE PRETTY FUNNY TOO.

“‘Why can't you place a blessing like that on us?’ I asked.

‘It only works on wild animals.’

‘So it would only affect Percy,’ Annabeth reasoned.

‘Hey!’ I protested.”

Percy was probably the best thing in this book. Period.

“All I could think of was that the teachers must've found the illegal stash of candy I'd been selling out of my dorms room. Or maybe they'd realized I got my Essay on Tom Sawyer from the Internet without ever reading the book and now they were going to take away my grade. Or worse, they were going to make me read the book.”

Obviously, when I’d first heard of the quest to find this lightning bolt, I was kind of rolling my eyes because I’d assumed it was going to be typical, but, I had a lot of fun! I feel like another thing was that I knew about Greek mythology and heard about the stories of all these heroes that we hear from the myth, this was just the best retake on Greek mythology. I don’t understand why we don’t read this and leave the textbook somewhere else . . .

Overall, The Lightning Thief was a lot of fun! I’m hoping to read the next book, The Sea of Monsters soon! I have like eight books on hold right now, and for four of them I’m next in line. So, I just want to finish my pile of books before I read anything more! I would recommend this to anyone that loves Greek mythology!

Thanks for reading my review everyone, and hope you have a great day! :D

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater (The Raven Cycle #2)
The Dream Thieves - Maggie Stiefvater

If you could steal things from dreams, what would you take?

Ronan Lynch has secrets. Some he keeps from others. Some he keeps from himself.

One secret: Ronan can bring things out of his dreams.

And sometimes he's not the only one who wants those things.

Ronan is one of the raven boys—a group of friends, practically brothers, searching for a dead king named Glendower, who they think is hidden somewhere in the hills by their elite private school, Aglionby Academy. The path to Glendower has long lived as an undercurrent beneath town. But now, like Ronan's secrets, it is beginning to rise to the surface—changing everything in its wake.

THIS BOOK IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE FIRST BOOK! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!

This book centers around Ronan, who is my favorite Raven Boy! Why, you ask?

“His eyes were frighteningly alive, the curve of his mouth savage and pleased. It suddenly didn't seem at all surprising that he should be able to pull things from his dreams.

In that moment, Blue was a little in love with all of them. Their magic. Their quest. Their awfulness and strangeness. Her raven boys.”

The amazing thing about this book is that it centers around a different character, but the plot and pacing of the story is still the same: they need to wake the ley lines. They need to find Glendower! It was so cool to read about their journey!

This book had the same dark humor, the action, the suspense, the pacing, the characters. Everything!

“‘I know you think you're a punk,’ Declan said. ‘But you aren't nearly as bad ass as you think you are.’

‘Oh, go to hell,’ Ronan snapped, just as the alter boys broached the rear doors.

‘Guys,’ Matthew pleaded. ‘Be holy.’”

There were moments where I thought that Adam Parrish was too much for me. He always made Gansey and Ronan feel as if he didn’t need them. And, he always made it sound like he was doing a favor on them by rejecting their offers. I HATED Adam in this book (until the end, where he moved his butt for once).

Ronan’s character development was amazing, and if I didn’t love him in the first book, I would love him now!

“He was brother to a liar and brother to an angel, son of a dream and son of a dreamer.”

Overall, The Dream Thieves was WAY BETTER than The Raven Boys and I think that anyone who hasn’t read this should read it now! It has the suspense, the ROMANCE, and everything else in between! I feel like we’re on the very edge to knowing Glendower now! And the ending of this book . . . if I didn’t have a huge reading pile, then I would’ve gone to get the next book like right now.

Thanks for reading my review guys! Hope you have a great day and until the next one! :D

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh (The Wrath and the Dawn #1)
The Wrath and the Dawn - Renee Ahdieh

A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

This book was SO MUCH FUN!

“You are not weak. You are not indecisive. You are strong. Fierce. Capable beyond measure.”

We have Shahrzad—Shazi—who is an amazing and wonderful main heroine! I expected Sharzad to be a delicate little thing, but she was just much fun to read about!

There was a lot of diversity in the story. But really, I loved the pacing and the love story! It was done pretty well! I didn’t think there were points where I was lost at all. I was pretty invested in the story! I thought all the characters were amazing!

Although we can tell Shazi is extremely smart and cunning, I didn’t think that her story was really so irresistible that I would be ready to put the safety of my kingdom on the line. But, the story is much more than that!

“‘What are you doing to me, you plague of a girl?’ he whispered.

‘If I’m a plague, then you should keep your distance, unless you plan on being destroyed.’ The weapons still in her grasp, she shoved against his chest.

‘No.’ His hands dropped to her waist. ‘Destroy me.’”

Excited Exciting animated GIF

The actual mystery of why the Caliph kills his brides in the morning, wasn’t really that much of a mystery, I actually knew why (kind of) in the beginning, but we don’t know the story! I haven’t read the original, so I can’t really say much about that. But, this book has got me interested in the tale!

There were also some nice fantasy elements put into play here. I did want to see more of that though . . . *cough cough* MAGIC CARPET?!?!? *cough cough*

The last  hundred pages had me on edge! I was literally dying to know what happens next and about Shazi! OMG I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW.

“‘Love is—a shade of what I feel.’”

Overall, The Wrath and the Dawn is an extremely impressive debut, though I have to admit, the ending is what made me push up my rating for this book. It has a strong main character, and believable love story (it’s based off of a tale, guys, don’t be judgy . . . ), and DIVERSITY. :D I would recommend this to anyone! If you haven’t read this book, you need to read this NOW!

Thanks for reading my review guys, and hope you have a great day! Until the next one!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter #3)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter is lucky to reach the age of thirteen, since he has already survived the murderous attacks of the feared Dark Lord on more than one occasion. But his hopes for a quiet term concentrating on Quidditch are dashed when a maniacal mass-murderer escapes from Azkaban, pursued by the soul-sucking Dementors who guard the prison. It's assumed that Hogwarts is the safest place for Harry to be. But is it a coincidence that he can feel eyes watching him in the dark, and should he be taking Professor Trelawney's ghoulish predictions seriously?

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”

I think this might be my favorite book in the series so far . . . Well, for the first 200 pages, I wondering, “Where’s all the tie-ups and action from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?” So, it was nice to finally get in on some of that action after those 200 pages! :D

“‘I'll fix it up with Mum and Dad, then I'll call you. I know how to use a fellytone now—’

‘A telephone, Ron,’ said Hermione. ‘Honestly, you should take Muggle Studies next year...’”

I thought that this book showed a lot more character problems (that makes no sense, but let’s go with it). We start to see parts that even though our wonderful Hermione Granger is so intelligent, she really starts to make it come in her way. Only one good thing came out of Hermione studying so much, and I think we all know what it is! :D Anyway, Hermione studies herself down to the bone, up to the point where it’s unbearable, even for her!

Harry and Ron seemed to get to their own problems, as well.

BUT. A LOT OF GREAT THINGS HAPPENED!

“‘Where is Wood?’ said Harry, suddenly realizing he wasn't there.

‘Still in the showers,’ said Fred. ‘We think he's trying to drown himself.’”

I thought that the story of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was great, but I’m really hoping for this series to speed up now! :D

Is time travel in all the books for Harry Potter? I’m not sure, but I’m hoping to see more of it! And . . . Siriusly, if we don’t get more of Sirius, I’m going to cry.

Overall, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was the funniest, most unpredictable and possibly my favorite (so far) in the series! :D I loved how everything connects together so well in this series and we end up missing so many clues or look too much into them! *cough cough* Trelawney *cough cough*

Thanks for reading my review, and hope you have a great day! :D
