On the one hand, I hated this book. It upset me for days. On the other hand, it is incredibly written. Worth it, but make sure you can A)discuss it with someone else and B)have some Terry Pratchett/Diana Wynne Jones/what-have-you to cheer you up after.

The Old Man and the Sea was possibly the worse choice I've ever made for a read-a-thon. The old man spends most of the book fighting the fish, weary, exhausted, tired. I'm not at all interested in fish but Hemingway is a writer I like, thin and lean.

Hemingway at his best. Old man and the sea is a story of grace under fire, life's little struggle, and dealing with loss all in one novella. Old man is a story that I will read time and time again.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway My rating: 1 of 5 stars I read this book a really long time ago for high school. What do I remember from it? Practically nothing. I do remember the end though, because that was just the cherry on the boring, ridiculous cake for me. I get it, it's supposed...

My husband asked me, "How do you blog about a book everyone reads in high school?" Actually, I didn't read this in high school. We read A Farewell to Arms, and it taught me to love Ernest Hemingway. I love his clear crisp prose and his capacity to tap deeply into human experience. And yet, for years...
