Well, on the whole I liked this series, but it does have some godawful terrible moments. Like, for example, the sequence where the Subtle Knife is reforged. I mean, here you are, you've got this unbelievably complex device which is capable of operating on subatomic strings in order to open up paths ...
I liked most of this book better than the first one, mostly because it focuses on a new character, Will, who I like much better than Lyra. Lyra and Will dash between worlds trying to collect allies and information about Dust. As before, the writing style is uneven--very believable and engaging whe...
This one took a little longer to get into than the first one, but I think that was only because I didn't devour this book in a single gulp, like I did with the first book.
Enjoyed this more than the first one. Once you get used to the style you can't put it down. Still don't think they're quite right for young kids though... (I was scared ;-)

They really are mostly all one book, a la Lord of the Rings, just split up to increase sales/commercial appeal. I also, tragically, can't remember individual plot points. I remember the gist, I remembe...

I like Will, and his very pressing day-to-day concerns, his practicality. This is where the series really engaged me, because I could relate to Will better than to Lyra.2 Oct 2016I really hate this cover. While it isn't clear what Will's ethnic heritage might be, the...
Review from School Library Journal:A direct continuation of the epic fantasy begun in The Golden Compass. Will Parry must find his father, who disappeared while exploring the far North. Mysterious strangers are hounding his mother for information about him. After Will accidentally kills one of them,...
