The Fire Next Time (1963) from Baldwin: Collection of Essays - The Library of America This book is Baldwin's opinion on race relations, perceived not only as a Negro, but as one with a deep insight into human psychology. He was one of the unprecedented writers to express what it was like to be N...

Loved the passion in this reviewer's voice as she discusses Song of Solomon, although I'm not as enamored with Toni Morrison's stories as she is. I hope it's as good as she said because its on my TBR shelf and one day I will get to it.

Having read this, I cannot stop thinking of my elderly Jewish friend, a Holocaust survivor. I'm not an American, but I was born in a country where literally a half of the total Holocaust death toll took place, and sometimes, speaking to her - and she is a wonderful, humorous, beautiful human being -...
Sarah ~Slow reader, or slowly reading? ;)
Loved it. Morrison's writing flowed beautifully and was a delight to read. It's definitely not an easy read (trigger warnings: rape, molestation) but, I loved it and the subject didn't deter me at all. Such a good book :)

Beloved, I felt, at one point, as though you were flaying me – repeatedly striking me with the details of Sethe's story, as they were revealed in layers, by her, by others. Each lash landed from a slightly different angle; each one dug a little deeper into my flesh. I’ve read novels about slavery,...

I'm still not sure exactly what was done to Sethe, or maybe it's just hard to accept what I think happened. It's a brutal, harrowing book at times...

Beautifully written. Until part 3, and something clicked. And then it did not work that well for me anymore.Nevertheless, yes, still one of the best proses I've ever read. I borrowed this book from the library, a first edition and it seems to have many avid previous readers. There are underlines, no...

Beloved has been more quickly and thoroughly canonized than any other modern book, so and because it suffers from two curses. The first is the curse of the classic itself, what you might call the Moby-Dick curse: everyone read it too early so no one liked it. It's not exactly difficult (nor exactly ...

got lost in all the lovely words, loved getting lost. minor note but major emotions. narrative glides down perfect prose pathways and through poetic passages to different destinations, into one mind and out of another, into many minds, past future past future, man. who knows where the next road goes...

“Darkness is stronger and swallows them like minnows.” - Toni Morrison, Beloved“Beloved” is a beautiful, haunting story that is set around the time following the slavery emancipation declaration. It’s mysterious and supernatural, as well as being a love story, a tale of horror, forgiveness, loss an...
