When one enters a new environment, culture shock may ensue but the realization that you are okay can help pull anyone through such a challenging emotional experience. As a United States Marine, there have been countless times when being the new person on deck was an inevitable experience. Arriving and reporting into the first unit assignment brought new meaning to being the new person. However, since people are intelligent human beings, we can also adapt to the new ways of life while learning techniques and methods in which to adapt to new surroundings. Ultimately, we can progress toward learning and becoming a part of that which is considered local customs and adopt some values of our new society we may find ourselves in. As the so-called “other” guy entering the world of The United States Marine Corps, living amongst warriors was a new setting and not becoming a warrior like unto them was clearly not an option.
