I simply could not get into this book. I checked it out because of the setting -- rural Wisconsin in the early 1900s. I had ancestors living there around that time and thought it would be an interesting insight into life back then, plus the topic of a mail-order black-widow bride seemed intriguing...

This book was definitely not what I thought it would be the three major characters are pathetic, shallow and extremely despicable human beings. If there not whining and crying about their past lives their obsessing about sex and when I say sex obsession I kid you not. I was really hoping for a suspe...

This book was not what I expected but turned out to be so engrossing. From the first page to the last I was swept up in the story. One of the things I particularly appreciate about it is the title, now that I've finished. It made me wonder whether he conceived of the title first. He must have. Brill...

My January loan from the Kindle Lending Library, so diving into this book was a relatively risk-free venture and I wasn't too concerned about the mixed reviews. There are definitely heavy sexual undertones throughout the entire book that some readers might find off-putting, but I honestly didn't have...

Another of those books that have a great idea but you wish someone else had written it. The soft porn sections were repetitive but easy to skip through but my main complaint is how the author is continually telling the reader what the characters are feeling and what the characters are like. I bought...

Another view of love and murder in early 20th-century rural Wisconsin...If this had not been an audiobook, I probably would not have finished it. It is a psychological tale about desire and despair. It reminded me very strongly of a macabre book that was popular when I was in college in the 70s - Wi...

vacation read #5: highly stylized writing. I think I quite liked it, it certainly kept me interested. Very reminiscent of the kind of stories that show up in film at IFF.

I had been told it was pretty racy, so I thought at least it would be lightly entertaining. It really wasn’t. I don’t object to the basic plot at all, but I did not enjoy the narrative style. I’m not sure what to call it. Non-present? Summary? It was a lot of ‘some days this would happen, other days...

From the very beginning, this book seemed like something that was being written for a writing class or group - way too "overwritten," elaborate descriptions, apparently trying to set the mood - I didn't think it worked, it was just boring.Once we got into the actual story, there were just too many t...

Harsh times harsh weather and seemingly harsh people. A great read.
