Days with Frog and Toad
Days with Frog and Toad - Arnold Lobel

Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel is a collection of stories about Frog and Toad.  Among the stories are life lessons about being proactive, not giving up after failure, and the true meaning of friendship.  One of the stories is called "The Kite" and Frog and Toad are trying to make a kite fly.  After several failed attempts and ridicule from some robins, Frog gets discouraged and wants to give up.  Toad, however, insists on trying one more time and they succeed in flying it.  After reading "The Kite," a teacher could have the students actually attempt to fly a kite and have a discussion on things that might help a kite fly turning the activity into a science lesson.  All of the stories in Days with Frog and Toad collection could be used in the classroom, and the activity about using "The Kite" was one example of how one of the stories could be used.   The Lexile leveling measure rates this book at 470L, which is in the reading level range for Grade 2.

Frog & Toad
Frog and Toad Are Friends - Arnold Lobel

Frog and Toad are the best of friends! They are clever, silly, and funny. This is an easy read for younger students. This book is at a first grade reading level in my opinion, but Fountas & Pinnell classify it as a K which is a level second-grade level.

After reading this book, I think it would be a fun idea to teach students facts about frogs and toads! There are all kinds of crazy facts about amphibians. For instance, did you know, touching frogs or toads won't actually give you warts?! That's just a myth!

Mouse Soup - Arnold Lobel

For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

A nice story about a clever mouse outwitting a hungry weasel. The book consists of a larger story and four short stories within it. It was an interesting set-up and made the book entertaining. Good illustrations with nice detail.

Some of the pages are a bit text-heavy. This book is recommended as a Reading Level 2 (Reading with Help). Vocabulary-wise I would say this is accurate, but some children may find the word to picture ratio a bit overwhelming.

Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel
Frog and Toad Together - Arnold Lobel

Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel is another great Frog and Toad book. It is easy to read and follow, with simple language. This book also is relatable to students as they likely do the same activities in the book with their own friends.

With that being said, this book would be excellent for a Connections activity--specifically text to self. Many connections can be made for friendship, activities/hobbies, kindness, etc. The students can write about how they can make connections between Frog and Toad's friendship and their own friendship with their siblings, parents, or friends.

Accelerated Reader Level: 2.9
