Bella Tuscany
Bella Tuscany - Frances Mayes

Very much more of the same from Under the Tuscan Sun but with more travel and more poetry and more philosophical musings.

I really just wanted to hear about the house and their village, so I found myself skimming whenever the chapters covered their travels.  I usually love the travel bits, but a combination of my mood and her tendency to write about their trips within Italy the way academic historians write about battles made it all feel too tedious.  But I loved hearing about the house, the restoration, re-building the gardens, and harvesting the olives.  That took up about half the book, so I went with a down the middle rating of three stars.

Bella Tuscany - Frances Mayes I'd prefer more details on the life in Italy and less on the wedding of the author's daughter in California.
I have not read the first book "Under the Tuscan Sun" but I have a feeling I should have read it instead of this sequel.

Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy
Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy - Frances Mayes Frances Mayes continues her story of life in Tuscany. The book is a meditation on life in Italy--gardening, cooking, traveling, etc. The luxury of an unhurried life a few months out of each year. An enjoyable read; I want to pack my bags tonight and spend a few weeks at the least in Tuscany at Bramasole!

Bella Tuscany - Frances Mayes I'm giving up on this book. I loved "Under the Tuscan Sun", so I had been looking forward to reading this sequel, but it just doesn't live up to my expectations. Rather than finding Frances Mayes writing engaging and charming as I did in UtTS, here it instead comes across as boring and pretentious. I've read half the book in the hopes that it would improve, but am now reaching the sad conclusion that it probably won't. Life is too short for books you have to fight your way through.

Bella Tuscany - Frances Mayes If at all possible one should arrange one's life to include a summer house in a scenic area. I plan to take this advice very seriously in my next life.
