In His Hands (Blank Canvas) - Adriana Anders

Abby cut the chain fence and and it was good she didn’t cut herself or Isaiah- who was the church leader and thought himself the Messiah and knew what was best for his flock-   would wonder what she had gotten into and sent someone to her. Abby was hoping Grapeman would hire her to work on his vines or anything else. Abby would do just about any kind of work. She had to help Sammy. The Grape Man's name was Luc. He told Abby he did the vines himself and had no work for her and she should go back to her church. Luc knew Abby was from the Church Of Apocalyptic Faith. Abby wondered how she could help Sammy now that she had failed  at getting a job from Luc. Hamish had been Abby’s husband  he couldn’t get her pregnant and Abby knew they would find someone else to push her with to see if the job could be done. Abby felt a ridiculous job would be created for her since she couldn’t be trusted with anyone else- too restless to work in the kitchen, to friendly to work with the outsiders. Abby felt  they could come back to the church once Sammy was cured. There had been so much good when Abby and her mom had arrived at the church. Abby had been a starving seven year old. Abby had gone with a struggling mom to a whole family where everyone pitched in for the greater good. All servants of God preparing for the Day. But then they had taken Abby away from her mom’s side. All her life no matter what or how much they struggled in the back of the old station wagon they were at least together. Then Abby’s mother said in all earnestness” did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom”? Abby grew she would ask question of the elders  that they didn’t want to answer so Abby became know as trouble and and difficult. They felt Abby had too much spirit and needed to be broken.  Hamish had been the most devout man Abby had ever met but he had turned to his eyes from the Savior that he had built his entire life on and Hamish had begged Abby to end it for him. Luc didn’t do well with people or people with him. Hamish had been old enough to  be  Abby’s grandfather and had been the first father of their religion.  Sammy had developed mental problems and he got treated badly sometimes.and was physically hurt. Lately Sammy had been having “spells” where he loses time and falls. Sammy is all Abby really has now. Abby wants to leave with Sammy and be free. But she has to have enough money to support her and Sammy. Luc finds he can’t forget Abby and he reaches out  to help her. Both Abby and Luc were lonely and had painful pasts. . Isaiah  didn’t believe in outside influences: no doctors, no medicine and what ever happened will be the will of God.

I couldn’t get into this story. I couldn’t seem to connect with Luc or Abby. I felt the story dragged especially in the beginning. By the time it started to pick up I had lost all interest and couldn’t get into the story. This was just too hard for me to read. I didn’t like how the author presented the abuse Abby had went through I just couldn’t an

Undercover cop Clay Navarro left the Sultans biker gang a changed man. Its ringleaders may be awaiting trial, but he wears the memory of every brutal act he was forced to commit tattooed across his skin.

He doesn't have space in his messed-up life for anything gentle--not now, maybe not ever.
Dr. Georgette Hadley is drawn to the damaged stranger's pain, intimidated but intrigued by the warmth that lies beneath Clay's frightening exterior.

But when the Sultans return looking for revenge, she finds herself drawn into the dirty underbelly of a life forged in violence...that not even her touch may be able to heal.

By Her Touch was a decent read but I just couldn't seem to invest in the plot or the cast, it had potential however the situation in which Clay and Hadley meet just felt odd and disjointed to me. I couldn't really engage in their relationship or the reasons behind them nor the on off push pull between them.

I liked them as characters but the mixture of the three didn't quite mesh as well as I'd hoped. I don't know if this is because I haven't read the first book and I'm missing something but I'll take responsibility for the low rating this time around.

Until next time book lovers...

4.5 Stars
'By Her Touch' by Adriana Anders is book Two in the "Blank Canvas" series. This is the story of Clay Navarro and Dr. Georgette Hadley 'George'. Clay barley made it out of the Sultans biker gang when he was an undercover cop. Part of being in that gang and also being tortured was to be forced to take a tattoo. Clay had come to George to get the really bad ones taken off. Clay finds George very attractive, sweet and total different than what he has been used to. George knows to that Clay is different and can't help but be attracted to him. But his body tells of allot of hard times in his life. George just wants to help heal him but will Clay let her. Clay has more scars on the inside but can George heal those too? Will Clay even let her?

Under Her Skin (Blank Canvas Book 1) - Adriana Anders
Now and then, I come across a book that tests my boundaries and forces me to re-think my views on controversial and hard-hitting topics. “Under Her Skin” was one such book. From the moment, I read the blurb I knew this would be an interesting read and so I was glad when Netgalley approved my request.

Not only is the story an emotional read, it is also thought-provoking. I know that this story is likely to be a trigger for persons who have been in a similar position. This story was a vivid reminder that some women may find themselves in a relationship that proves to be toxic both mentally and physically. At times, they find excuses to justify their reasons for remaining in such a relationship. Some of these same women will look deep within themselves to find the courage to escape such a situation and take back their lives. This is a story about one such woman.

Uma was in a relationship with a powerful man. When they first met, he was as charming as ever, but that all changed as their relationship progressed. The signs were there, but she stuck it out believing that things would change. Unfortunately, that was not the case, things went downhill and before she knew it, she was running for her life.

The story started slow and it maintained that pace to the end. Although the pacing was slow, the story was not boring. The pacing was perfect for this kind of story. This is the kind of story that deserves to be savoured and not rushed.

This is not a sweet and flowery romance. It is a story about two broken souls finding love when they least expect it. Uma is running for her life and getting close to anyone, especially a man was not on her list of priorities. What she never expected to encounter was the brooding and scary stranger who would become her lifeline in her journey of reclaiming her life.

From the moment Ivan laid eyes on Uma, he knew she was a victim of abuse having experienced it first-hand. He wanted to help, but this would prove challenging, as she was afraid to put her trust in him, which is understandable given her history. She would soon come to realise that he is nothing like her ex-fiancée but, that did stop her from being wary. He helped her realise that she need not be afraid. He gave her hope. This reminded me that a relationship with the right person could be a wonderful and powerful experience.

Their interaction was poignant. The author’s portrayal of Uma and Ivan made it easy to establish a connection with them. I felt every emotion that they experienced. I enjoyed watching Uma overcome her fears and regain her confidence. They helped each other in their healing process.

I enjoyed the romance, which did not take place until around the second half of the story. It moved slowly, which was a good thing for them both. Her need for control in this was understandable and I loved that Ivan allowed her to take charge.

The supporting characters were diverse, some were likable and some not so much. The one that peaked my interest was Uma’s new employer. At first, her behavior was mean, but beneath all that, meanness laid a soul that has had its share of pain. I loved that Uma stood up to her making their interaction entertaining.

Verdict:

Under Her Skin is everything I expected it to be. It is an unforgettable story about love, hope, and healing. I enjoyed every moment of this powerful, emotional and thought-provoking read and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

NB: This can be read as a stand-alone.

Under Her Skin (Blank Canvas #1) by Adriana Anders

A darkly possessive relationship has left Uma alone and on the run.

Beneath her drab clothing, she hides a terrible secret—proof of her abuse, tattooed onto her skin in a lurid reminder of everything she’s survived.

Caught between a brutal past and an uncertain future, Uma’s reluctant to bare herself to anyone…

much less a rough ex-con whose rage drives him in ways she will never understand.

But beneath his frightening exterior, Ivan is gentle. Warm. Compassionate.

And just as determined to heal Uma’s broken heart as he is to destroy the monster who left his mark scrawled across the delicate tapestry of her skin.

For such an emotionally cold and characteristically harsh book, Under her Skin was an intensely emotional read for me.

The world is not a kind place as Uma discovers in this book so do readers who understand what its like to be on the receiving end of relationships like the ones she's suffered through.

Under her Skin is a great read, and although I have few words to express why I liked it so much that will remain a personal thing for me.
