Queen of Shadows - Sarah J. Maas

Never have I been through such an emotional ride, the last part of this book really had me wanting to shout and jump up and down. This book was made up of three stories, the rescue attempt of Aedion, the final at last moment of the confrontation with the King of Assassins and then the showdown at the castle with the King and Dorian.

I've said it a lot, reading the novellas will give you so much background to Celaena and what's she's been through. It's been hinted at a lot but never really talked about, in this book and the last it's much more heavily mentioned, so if you haven't read already do it now.

As well as feeling like a book of three parts, character ARC wise it felt like a duology, at first it felt like characters like Celaena, or Aelin as she's now become her true self, Manon and Chaol are all taking a backward step in how I thought their journey would progress. But it does change and a lot and I enjoyed the outcome.

The scope of these books has changed dramatically and it really feels like a real fantasy book, especially with so many characters and plots linking and coming together. So far this series hasn't let me down emotionally, its structure got a little iffy in the last book and at times it feels like Celaena/Aelin is always taking a backwards step in terms of general bratty behaviour and attitude. But one thing is certain, it never fails to redeem itself by the end.

Chasing Eva (In Light of Shadows) by Camellia Hart
Chasing Eva (In Light of Shadows Series Book 1) - Camellia Hart

Eva is a fierce adversary when pushed too far. Clive is a worthy opponent. When your heart is forced into battle with your head, what do you do? Chasing Eva is a smartly crafted war between mind and heart, body and soul, attraction and loathing. Camellia Hart makes it hard to choose between two overpowering forces. When falling in love, there's always a catch and the heart wants what it wants.

A lot of space action
Veil of Shadows (Book 2 of The Empire of Bones Saga) - Terry Mixon

and adventures and coups and so on.

There is enough happening that the weakness of the characters and their interactions do not disturb the fun of reading it so much.

Stargate meets The Neverending Story
A Veil of Shadows: The Shadow Gate Chronicles Book II (Volume 2) - Michael W. Garza

The following book was kindly sent to me by the author, Michael W. Garza, who requested a review. This book is out now and you can get a paperback or ebook copy by visiting Amazon. :-)

You might recognize the author's name because I reviewed The Last Shadow Gate just a few months ago. Today I'll be continuing the series with A Veil of Shadows. The reader is reunited with Gavin and his sister Naomi right after they landed in the mystery world on the other side of the Shadow Gate. Our main characters are once again thrust into a divisive society on the brink of war but luckily they manage to find a few allies (one of which might come as no surprise to the reader). The world building continues with diverse characters such as the Treekin who reminded me somewhat of characters in The Neverending Story. If you're looking for a series that is full to the brim with characters, subplots, and moving parts of all kinds then I do believe you've stumbled across just the book for you. For me, it felt like there was just too much happening and the narrative could have been tightened up. While I appreciate the imaginative concepts that went into the creation of these characters and this world I don't think that I'll be continuing the series. Burgeoning fans of epic fantasy will however enjoy this immensely. :-)

This was surprising little gem...
Out of the Shadows (Dreamspun Desires Book 40) - K.C. Wells,Finn Sterling

I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect with this one  but it's K. C. Wells so I felt fairly certain that at the worst I was going to at least like this one. Well I did and I was even more pleasantly surprised to realize that I more than liked it.

'Out of the Shadows' turned out to be a sweet story about a Christian Hernandez, a man who is left severely scared on the right side of his body...specifically his face and arm and how he comes to see that while the scars he was left with are a part of him they don't have to define him and Josh the sweet man who enters his life due to renovations that are being made in the apartment complex where he lives who sees beyond how Christian looks to the man he is. One of my favorite things about this story is the banter between Josh and Christian. From their first conversation I found them to be totally charming and adorable.

While there's not really any angst in this one neither does Josh's entrance into Christian's life magically fix things. This is a slow burn as Josh and Christian go from strangers to a very tenuous relationship as acquaintances and with time and patience they become friends as Josh slowly and persistently strives to bring Christian out of his shell and help him accept to reclaim his life...a life that can exist outside of the walls of his apartment.

I think for me this was a case of right story right time. I loved the simplicity of this story that was quite honestly filled with a whole lot of people who seemed really nice and had the ability to see beyond the surface and appreciate the person inside. I also liked that this was not a story filled with insta-love, insta-fix...insta-anything nor was it a story of overly complicated and convoluted solutions. Sometimes the solutions in life are straightforward solutions that just need time and effort which is how things felt in this story.

'Out of the Shadows' was narrated by a new to me narrator named Finn Sterling and I have to admit that not all of the voices he created for these characters matched what my mind conjured but I was ok with this because while they didn't match my imaginings they were unique and expressive to each character.

This book #40 in Dreamspinner's Dreamspun Desires series and can easily be read or listened to on audio as a standalone story.
