Caught Running by Madeleine Urban, Abigail Roux 3.5 Star Review!
Caught Running - Madeleine Urban,Abigail Roux,Jeff Gelder

Ten years after graduation, Jake "the jock" Campbell and Brandon "the nerd" Bartlett are teaching at their old high school and still living in separate worlds. When Brandon is thrown into a coaching job on Jake's baseball team, they find themselves learning more about each other than they'd ever expected. High school is all about image – even for the teachers. Brandon and Jake have to get past their preconceived notions to find the friendship needed to work together. And somewhere along the way, they discover that perceptions can always change for the better.

Review

I picked this book up because I have seen it everywhere on Favorite Male Male Romance books.

I can see why its is so popular. Parts of the love story and topics are really great and thoughtful but some of the basics of the writing and the romance genre aspects are rough.

The heroes have that opposites attract mojo going on. I love that Brandon and Jake are both teachers and love their work with students. The slow burn of the romantic connections is well done and the relationship is sweet. However, we get a HFN and I wanted more really.

The book takes a thoughtful look at high school cliques and politics at the teacher and student levels. The thinking about coaching and also extra work of tutoring is compelling as is the hard work of student be they athletes or academic high achievers.

The writers also look at the damage high school and college athletics do to the body and we venture into pain pill addiction but the hard work recovery is left for after the book ends and that was disappointing.

Not so good:
Some of the side characters are interesting but all the women are not drawn with complexity. The changing of pov are pretty awful and hard to track who is thinking and the third person subjective point of view is.... not working.

So, I like a lot of it but think the over book hints at these writers desire to write something romantic but not romance and in more of a long running series which is what happens later.

quote 2015-10-12 08:09
I want to eat you alive, he wanted to say. I want to sink into you and stay. God, how did this happen so fast? He was dizzy with it, with Jake's passion, his laugh, his growl, the deep brown eyes that darkened with hunger when they looked at him. Brandon shivered and wrapped his arms around Jake's neck to hold on tight.

Run to me
Caught Running - Madeleine Urban,Abigail Roux,Jeff Gelder

Jake Campbell and Brandon Bartlett used to go to high school together. They ran in different circles, obviously. Now, they are both back and working at their old high school.

The sports teams end up needing help and science teacher Brandon comes to the resuce. He and Jake become friends. Is there room for more?

Being back at the high school brings up old memories and perceptions. There are clicks, even for the teachers. Is Brandon crossing over to Jake's world? He soon shows he can fit in with the baseball team.

Jake quickly becomes important to Brandon and vice versa. Can they cross over to where them being a couple is a good thing? Can they go public with it? What will their friends think if everyone knows? Will it matter?

Everyone wants a do over for high school. This book brings all that up and more. It has an epic love story among the fun and the games. I loved the banter, the sexy times, and especially the teachers being amazing at their jobs! I give this story a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Caught Running
Caught Running - Madeleine Urban,Abigail Roux,Jeff Gelder "Nerdy" Science teacher and the "jock" baseball coach. How classic and awesome. I love when two unlikely guys end up together. This was a classic simple romance and it was perfect.

The narration on this one could have been better, but it wasn't so bad it detracted from the story, so I didn't knock off a star from my rating for it. That wouldn't be fair to the story.

Never caught but still running...away
Caught Running - Abigail Roux

If it looks like an infodump and if it walks like an infodump it is an infodump.

I do love the trope, but I hate the writing. I hated it in their Cut & Run books and I hate it here. It's disjointed despite logical progression of the story and the constant switching from two different points of view (clearly written by two different authors) makes it seem like the characters share a mind and are repeating some things over and over.

Such a shame, not really.

I'm DNFing on page 13 because the most important thing about becoming an assistant coach to a high school baseball team is to dress for the part. I smell gratuitous UST building ahead.
