Coming to America
Coming to America : The Story of Immigration - Betsy Maestro,Suzanne Ryan

Coming to America is great for kids and adults of all ages. While reading I learned a few things I did not know and it is always great to learn at any age. This book uses the power of illustrations to really drive home the message and make it engaging for children. America is a melting pot of so many people and cultures and that is what makes it special. It is important for students to understand that almost everyone on this land comes from a brave line of immigrants that had the courage to start a new life and leave everything they knew in order to give future generations a better life. It also, teaches students that everyone did not come to America by choice but persevered never the less. A great activity is to ask students to an object that is important to them to show the class. Students will tell their fellow classmates what the object means to them and the history behind it. They will describe how they would feel if they had to leave it behind. This activity will help students understand that most immigrants left everything they loved and cherished to come to America. Incorporating this book into my lesson will help me integrate social students and reading.

Considering I only buy ebooks on sale, the restrictions this go around seems really easy. There are only a few books I have on my 2019 reading that don't fit the restrictions. My problem will be library borrows, as the winter editions don't allow library reading to count.

My COYER TBR is just 15 books, which will allow for non-challenge reading.

1. You Can't Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson (memoir)

2. Cheer Up Love by Susan Calman  (memoir)

3. Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt (women's history)

4. Radium Girls by Kate Moore (women's history)

5. Mary and Lou and Ted and Rhoda by Jennifer Armstrong (pop culture)

6. The Sword Dancer by Jeannie Lin (historical romance)

7. A Dance with Danger by Jeannie Lin (historical romance)

8. North to You by Tif Marcelo (contemporary romance)

9. Radio Girls by Sarah-Jane Stratford (historical fiction)

10. Sweet Disorder by Rose Lerner (historical romance)

11. Deliver Me by Farrah Rochon (contemporary romance)

12. Somewhere in France by Jennifer Robson (historical fiction)

13. Ellis Island by Kate Kerrigan (historical fiction)

14. Star Dust by Emma Barry and Genevieve Turner (historical romance)

15. London Belles by Annie Groves (women's fiction)

At Ellis Island
At Ellis Island: A History in Many Voices - Louise Peacock

At Ellis Island is a collection of stories from different people and different point of views about their own experiences through Ellis Island. The stories are from people such as, a young girl traveling with her great, great grandmother, an Armenian girl, and then voices of real immigrants. This would be a great book to read when studying immigration. After reading this book, the teacher could have students look up articles and research others that have immigrated to the U.S.

Friday Reads - June 23, 2017
The Bull Rider's Homecoming (Blue Thorn Ranch) - Allie Pleiter
Ellis Island - Kate Kerrigan
Hell on Wheels - Julie Ann Walker
A Lady for Lord Randall (Brides of Waterloo) - Sarah Mallory
Just Mercy - Bryan Stevenson

For the last week of June, I have a full load to read. All new, fresh reading to juice up my reading mojo.

Friday Free Read/COYER Summer 2017: The Bull Rider's Homecoming by Allie Pleiter. This is on my COYER reading list so I figured kill two birds with one book. I have read another book by this author that I enjoyed so I am hoping for another great read.

BL-opoly Read/Pop Sugar Challenge: Ellis Island (Ellis Island #1) by Kate Kerrigan. Irish immigrant to NYC during the 1920s satisfies the prompt "book written/about refugees or immigrants".

RB Bingo: Hell on Wheels (Black Knights, Inc #1) by Julie Ann Walker. Still trying to find a book that fits in the "Never read genre/subgenre" square. I bailed on the rock star series when it became clear the series was about all the other employees of the band and not about the band members. This book is a combination of motorcycle club and military romance, which are other niches I don't read. Thank goodness for OverDrive.

COYER Summer 2017: A Lady for Lord Randall (Brides of Waterloo #1) by Sarah Mallory. This is the first in a trilogy. I am kicking myself for reading that kidnapped romance when I could have just waited for COYER to start and used this book instead.

Random Pick: Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson because it is due back to the library at the end of the week.
