Smoky Night
Smoky Night - David Diaz,Eve Bunting

After a few disappointments, this Caldecott winner is so great. I love the illustrations. I love the way the frames work with the text and the main images. I love the story and the depiction of interracial tensions and relationships (I know that probably sounds a little weird, but it was very realistic without being heavy handed, too didactic or over the top).

Gleam and Glow
Gleam and Glow - Eve Bunting,Peter Sylvada

Lexile Level: 450L

This story based on the true experience of a Bosnian family forced to flee their country during the recent civil war. Eight year old Viktor watches as his father goes to join the Liberation Army. He, his mother, and younger sister, Marina, will soon be forced to leave their home. A stranger passes through Viktor's town on their way to the border and leaves his two golden fish with the family. But just a few days later, as they ready themselves to depart, Viktor releases the fish into their pond. After days and weeks of walking and of living in a refugee camp, the boy and his mother and sister share a glorious reunion with their dad and eventually return home. When the family returns home they are saddened to see that their home has been destroyed but in awe to see what was left in the pond.

I would read this story to my 4-6th grade class to learn about history and to show that even through tragedy and hardship there is always hope and life at the end.

Green Shamrocks
Green Shamrocks - Eve Bunting,Joëlle Dreidemy

I really enjoy having read-alouds that go with the theme of a main holiday of the month. This book obviously would be read near St. Patrick's Day. It is a very simple story that could be used to teach about problem and solution. The students could also complete a craft during a St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Muy Bien!!
A Day's Work - Eve Bunting,Ronald Himler

The first time I ever heard about this book was in my placement! I was able to read this book to my students and, wow, this is an awesome book! Without giving away too much, this book tells the story of a young Mexican boy who helps his abuelo find work. I would use this story in my classroom to include any Spanish speaking or Mexican student. This is such an excellent book that deals with the message of doing the right thing no matter how hard! I would also use it to teach students that honesty is always the right policy. I would use this book anywhere from 1st grade to 4th grade!
