Flesh and Blood (House of Comarré #2)
Flesh and Blood (House of Comarré #2) - Kristen Painter 3 stars

Not as enjoyable as the first book. I hate love triangles, so of course the author had to throw one in here. Once again the villains were one dimensional, and even as they are killed off one by one, I am looking forward to seeing the end of Tatiana. She as zero redeeming qualities, which makes for one boring bad guy (or bad girl, in this case). These are quick reads, so I will more than likely read at least the next installment.

GIFTED ((The World of Flesh and Blood Book 1) - Agapé Perez

All Agape had left was a photograph of the girl that was his soulmate. It as all Agape had left until he could win her back. This photo is what got Agape through his days in prison for being Gifted. But he was finally being released after three years. Then the van was attacked when Agape  came to he was against a tree with his wrists uncuffed and his gag off. Agape heard voices in his head of those who took over his body. Most of the time he tried to ignore them.

I just could not get into this story even though I did try. It just jumped from one spirit invading Agape to the next. It just didn’t hold my interest.

I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

"Flesh and Blood” by Simon Cheshire (Book 3 in The Red Eye Series)
Flesh and Blood (Red Eye) - Simon Cheshire

I must record the facts that have led me to where I am now. So that, when someone reads this, they understand. Sam Hunter's neighbours are pillars of the community, the most influential people in town. But they're liars too. The Greenhills are hiding something and Sam's determined to find out what it is. As his investigation unfolds, he realizes the lies reach further than he ever imagined - is there anyone he can trust? Uncovering the horror is one thing ...escaping is another. A chilling new story in the Red Eye series.

PLEASE NOTE: this book contains strong violence and horror and IS NOT suitable for pre-teen readers. For ages 15+ only.

Sam Hunter has grown up in a relatively poor household. When his family comes into some money and moves to an affluent town, he feels out of place in his new school and his new environment.

Sam now lives close to the imposing Bierce Priory. Its owners, the wealthy and influential Greenhills, are the town’s resident philanthropists and a case study in success.

Slowly, Sam uncovers the terrifying truth about the Greenhills and the town they live in. A truth so disturbing that Sam’s life becomes a living, freakish nightmare, in which he is forced to doubt his own sanity…  :(Simon Cheshire)

Flesh And Blood is a truly gruesome horror story in the Red Eye series.

British author Simon Cheshire offers this gruesome, thrilling, and mysterious chilling story in book 3 of the Red Eye Series by Stripes Publishing. 17-year-old Sam Hunter and his parents have just moved in to a cul-de-sac town called Priory Mews, a rich neighborhood with a history full of dark and sinister secrets.

Sam's mother is employed by a bank and his dad is a musician. His mother is always at work and his dad asleep. But all that alone time spent by himself reading comic books led him to become interested in pursuing a career as a journalist. It is Sam's curiosity and ambitions of looking for a story that leads him to investigate the Greenhills. His father gets a break when two of his songs get sold and they earn a lot of money. Later on after moving in to Priory Mews and on his first day of school at Maybrick High a  body of a man is found, the top of his head is missing making his day worst. But it isn't until he hears a scream from outside his bedroom coming from the creepy mansion Bierce Priory ,where he sees a a injured dog and a sinister distorted face of a man on the window that he realizes that something weird is going on. The story is told in past tense, meaning that Sam's  already lived through everything in the story. As you read along you get the sense that he is writing this in a journal for someone, which in the end we shockingly find out why.

“I didn’t want things to turn out this way. I really didn’t. There have been deaths, and worse. Even if there’s no blood on my hands , not directly, I have to face the consequences of my actions, of what I did do. If events had happened differently, if I hadn’t been so intent on following my theories, then perhaps I wouldn’t be here now, sitting at this desk, writing out what some might see as a confession. But, if I hadn’t reacted as I did, then I’d never have found out everything I uncovered. I had to try, didn’t I? Maybe I could have prevented some of it. Maybe I could have saved a life or two, if only I’d acted sooner. No, that’s not true. I acted soon enough. I think. Nobody believed me, except Liam and Jo. And they didn’t take me seriously, at first. When did I last sleep? I don’t remember. It doesn’t matter, I guess. I have to write. I have to tell myself to stop being a pathetic baby and be calm and rational. That’s what I have to do. I must record the facts, a sequence of events, the chain of suspicions and thoughts that have led me to where I am now. So that, when someone reads this, they understand. At least it’s quiet right now, and I can collect my thoughts. This desk I’m sitting at is small and antique. A really nice piece of furniture. You can see the dark grain of the wood, the years displayed in its warm colour, its soft shine. The notebook has smooth, off-white paper. It almost seems a shame to write in it, but of course I must. I have to set down everything, to document it, from the beginning. I have to think clearly. Breathe deeply. I’ll sit and think for a while. Then I’ll write".

While attending Maybrick High he meets Liam and Jo two nerds that enjoy comics and scifi-movies just like him. Later on he meets popular Emma Greenhills who lives next to him on the creepy Bierce  Priory.

What were the Greenhills so desperately trying to cover up?

This book explores the difference between the rich vs the poor, which later in the book we find is a important factor in the events that unfold. Hadlington looks down on the residents of Elton Garden. Every time a body was found in the river or in the park everyone assumed that Elton Gardens was responsible. People choose to believe that it was the work of drug dealers and gangs. As well as how far a person would go to in order to survive. If you are a fan of gory books and gory movies then you will enjoy this book. This book was really descriptive. This characters with a lack of morals, heartless were truly frightening and terrifying.

This book actually scared the heck out me.Maybe it is because I haven't read a horror book in a while but the day I read it I coudn't help double checking to make sure my door was locked. While you're reading you won't be able to stop questioning the characters poor decisions, and wonder weather there are actual people capable of doing what the Greenhills did. They were seriously monsters, while reading I kept thinking about all the scary movies I've ever seen.

        The house of horrors

“This, I later found out, was Bierce Priory, built in 1812. That extension was constructed in the 1920s, at the same time as our house. Even at first sight, even with the excitement of the moment sending my mood soaring, the Priory looked cold and austere. As if it was watching me back”.

Bierce Priory was the scene of unfathomable deviant crimes. The Greenhills obsession with dissection and keeping their victims various body parts in jars in the house. They injected drugs on their victims in order to render them unconscious, conducting experiments both on humans and animals, and cutting them to pieces and eventually killing them.

In the end I had mixed feelings about Sam. I liked the fact that he tried to follow his dreams in becoming a journalist. But I didn't like some of the selfish decisions that he made, even though he did them in order to survive. I liked how the story was so unpredictable at times and mysterious, the characters Liam and Jo were my favorite characters, I couldn't help feeling like they were betrayed by Sam. At times i found myself trying to predict what was coming next. The ending was really unexpected which made it all the more worthwhile. Be aware that if your one of those who dislike graphic images of dismembered bodies and descriptions of horrific murder you should probably skip this one!

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.

My rating: 4.5 stars****

Flesh and Blood - Patricia Cornwell
At the risk of dating myself, I need to reveal that I have been reading the Kay Scarpetta novels ever since the first one came out. That's been quite a while now.

And this one? Was something of a disappointment. Not only were there punctuation errors throughout (which is not the author's fault, but that of her editor), I actually think that Patricia Cornwell has started to dislike one of her characters.

And if that's not the case, well, she's doing a bang-up job of making it look like she's sorry she ever created Kay's niece, Lucy ... because this book has another party framing Lucy to make it look like she's the one committing a series of crimes.

This time out, it's a series of related shootings and drownings that have to do with previous cases on which Scarpetta has been the medical examiner -- shootings that look like the only person around who could possibly commit them is Lucy, due to various circumstances.

As the story unfolded, I found myself getting mad at the author and thinking "what a cheap cheat this all is."

I still enjoyed the interactions between Kay and Marino which, frankly, show more passion and caring than the relationship between Kay and her husband, Benton.

Just not the best outing in the series, in my opinion.

MY REVIEW

I love Patricia Cornwell’s novels and there is never any need to investigate further when seeing a new release. She is on my automatic grab it list.

In the world of forensics, Scarpetta is at the top of the list. Now, we have a serial sniper leaving dead bodies up and down the east coast and she is hot on the case.

Scarpetta is a well developed and strong character. She has a Greyhound named Sock – what a cool name is that? She is the chief medical examiner of Massachusetys and also works for the Pentagon. Believes in doing the right thing sometimes involves bending the rules a bit. Kay is Dr Death, a stickler for details and take of care of business now attitude, which can rub others the wrong way.

Benton, her significant other, comes from money, but he is not a snob. He is an FBI profiler and very good at his job.

Lucy…how can I describe this dangerous dynamo. . I love this character, flaws and all. She is bold, confident and can kick your ass from here to tomorrow. She knows weapons, drives a Ferrari, owns and operates her own chopper and is a genius when it comes to computers. If you mess with her and hers, it could be deadly.

Marino, another friend of our Scarpetta’s cast of characters, had been working at CFC with her, but was lured back to the Police Department. He still assumes they are a team and Scarpetta will drop everything to help him whenever heeded. He is a bit cantankerous. I love him and his bull in a china shop attitude. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. Nothing, noone stands in the way of his investigations. Kay at times feels she works for him not with him, whether making a call or cleaning his sunglasses.. I find that funny.

Does their work and stress of job create an aura of competition, turning friends into antagonists, or worse yet, enemies, working against each other, causing problems on cases they are forced to share?

Bloom is an insurance investigator. Why does he keep turning up like a bad penny? He works for an insurance company that does all they can to deny claims.

What do a man accused, but innocent, of being a terrorist, a young girl supposedly in a drowning accident, seven bright and shiny copper pennies, a ruthless insurance investigator, a 61 year old murdered woman, a dead crane operator have in common?

As usual Patricia Cornwell took me on a roller coaster ride of mystery, danger and intrigue at every turn with Flesh and Blood. She kept me on my toes with twists and turns and I am unable to put all the pieces together. I know they will fit, I just don’t know how.  It doesn’t matter if I figure it out or not, I am still on pins and needles as I read to the very end.

Kay Scarpetta is not the only adventurous, do it myself kind of investigator, so is Patricia Cornwell. Be sure and read her bio, which is almost as entertaining as the book itself.

I received a copy of Flesh and Blood in return for an honest and unbiased review.

SYNOPSIS

It’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s birthday, and she’s about to head to Miami for a vacation with Benton Wesley, her FBI profiler husband, when she notices seven pennies on a wall behind their Cambridge house. Is this a kids’ game? If so, why are all of the coins dated 1981 and so shiny they could be newly minted? Her cellphone rings, and Detective Pete Marino tells her there’s been a homicide five minutes away. A high school music teacher has been shot with uncanny precision as he unloaded groceries from his car. No one has heard or seen a thing.

In this 22nd Scarpetta novel, the master forensic sleuth finds herself in the unsettling pursuit of a serial sniper who leaves no incriminating evidence except fragments of copper. The shots seem impossible, yet they are so perfect they cause instant death. The victims appear to have had nothing in common, and there is no pattern to indicate where the killer will strike next. First New Jersey, then Massachusetts, and then the murky depths off the coast of South Florida, where Scarpetta investigates a shipwreck, looking for answers that only she can discover and analyze. And it is there that she comes face to face with shocking evidence that implicates her techno genius niece, Lucy, Scarpetta’s own flesh and blood.
