This is the story of a family who's lost a mother to the Nova Corps, and their world to bugs of annihilation. It's the story of how they survive, how they cope, and it's the story of what happened when someone comes back, and hopefully gives them a second chance at a new life.
Of course, with the gems involved, so is Thanos, and that complicates matters, as does the fact that others want the gems, as well.
It's not as funny as most of Duggan's work, but this is meant to be more serious, and I like that it isn't. It shows that Duggan can write something other than gags, and he can write both well.
I'm really enjoying this AU world that he's built up here, I like what he's done with the characters, and I found myself emotionally invested in their lives and what happens to them.
What if giant bugs were trying to take over your world, and your mother left to fight for the Nova Corps, abandoning you to these creatures?
Well, if you're Anwen, and you stumble upon an Infinity Gem? It looks like things are about to get worse. This is pretty much the whole plot of issue one, but it's a lot more fun than that. It's a slow burn as you get to know Anwen and her family as they fight to survive.
They're good people to know.
And I may have to lie to a RL friend of mine who's joking about not talking to me ever again because I was having trouble getting through this...
The plotline was, as promised, good, but I couldn't really connect with any of the characters. It all felt a little rote: battles and not the kind of emotional impact that I've come to expect from Marvel lately. I think the fact that Adam Warlock is such a main character in this, and I don't particularly care for him helped my emotional distance when it came to this.
But most of my disappointment was in how boring how I found this in general and how much I didn't buy the ending. I just didn't see the character acting the way in that one last scene, and it really pulled me out of the story.
The middle part was the best in my opinion, but this is not something I'll read again.
