October 2015 Reading List
Lowcountry Boneyard - Susan M. Boyer
Bite Me, Your Grace - Brooklyn Ann
Dark Wolf Rising - Rhyannon Byrd
Haunted on Bourbon Street - Deanna Chase
The Captive Maiden - Melanie Dickerson
The Fairest Beauty - Melanie Dickerson
Aphrodite's Kiss - Julie Kenner
Almost a Goddess - Judi McCoy
To Kill A Warlock - H.P. Mallory
Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble - H.P. Mallory

I am keeping to the term "paranormal" to the light, fluffy side this year. In addition to the books shown, I am reading one non-fiction book, author Susan McBride's memoir called In the Pink: How I Met the Perfect (Younger) Man, Survived Breast Cancer, and Found True Happiness After 40. I am a big fan of one of her cozy mystery series, and since October is Breast Cancer awareness month, I thought it would be fitting choice. And yes, there is a cougar on the cover of the book, although I find it to be in keeping with the author's sense of humor and not mocking female-male May-December relationships.

Reading List:

1. Lowcountry Boneyard (Liz Talbot #3) by Susan M. Boyer. I love this cozy mystery series, and it features a ghost as a series regular character.

2. Bite Me, Your Grace by Brooklynn Ann. Paranormal + historical romance = something new and different. Heard some good things about this book so I picked it up on a sale.

3. Dark Wolf Rising by Rhyannon Byrd. Tried to get to this book last year, but no dice. There are a lot more books in her Dark Wolf series, but I am afraid to try them until I read this one and see how the writing plays out.

4. Haunted on Bourbon Street (Jade Calhoun Series #1) by Deanna Chase. Because New Orleans seems like the perfect place to have a paranormal experience.

5. The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson. Fairy tale retelling (Cinderella I think) with a Christian bent.

6. The Fairest Beauty by Melanie Dickerson. Fairy tale retelling (Snow White I think) with a Christian bent.

7. Aphrodite's Kiss (Superhero Series #1) by Julie Kenner. Technically, a super-heroine story.

8. Almost a Goddess by Judi McCoy. Because I am doing the whole spectrum of paranormal.

9. To Kill a Warlock (Dulcie O'Neil Series #1) by HP Mallory. The cover was cute.

10. Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins #1) by HP Mallory. Because I love the literary takes of these titles.

11. In the Pink: How I Met the Perfect (Younger) Man, Survived Breast Cancer, and Found True Happiness After 40 by Susan McBride

I Dream Of You - Judi McCoy
Genesis - Kaitlyn O'Connor

I know it is weird to think of Paranormal, Science Fiction or Fantasy Romance being set on the beach but some really wonderful love stories in these genres are sandy and sea lapped.

Enjoy!

1. Genesis by Kaitlyn O'Connor

Bri's uncertain of whether she finds it more unnerving or thrilling that Kole, a warrior well over six feet in height and built like the hulk, watches her with hungry, covetous eyes, until the slavers who captured her toss her into his habitat with him for breeding. Then she knows it's both, but it's even more unsettling to find herself the object of desire of two six and a half foot males-particularly since Kole and Dansk seem perfectly willing fight to the death to settle which of them gets to breed he

2. I Dream of You by Judi McCoy

Saddened by her broken engagement and the difficulties of her family owned computer business, Maddie Winston escapes to her grandmther's bed and breakfast in the Florida Keys. While walking the beach she finds a bottle washed onto the shore and begins to scrub the tarnished metal. Imagine her surprise when the top pops off and smoke rises, forming into a hunky genie who announces that her wish is his command. Maddie is so disbelieving, she leaves the man and his 'magic' bottle and returns to New York to start rebuilding her life.

When she arrives back in her apartment and begins to unpack, she finds the bottle in her suitcase. More than annoyed, she tosses it down the garbage chute. The next day, it shows up in her briefcase and this time she's forced to admit something screwy is happening.

She polishes the bottle again, not quite believing the coconut-headed hunk will show up, but he does, and that's when the fun begins. Follow Maddie and Ben on their magic carpet ride to adventure and true love.

3. Heart Change by Robin D. Owens

Signet D'Marigold's lonely life is shaken when a prophet reveals she is a catalyst for change. But to accept her new life?and the charge of the noble child Avellana means embracing a danger that may be fatal for them both. Especially when Signet?s attraction to her new bodyguard signals a secret enemy sworn to destroy them.

4. Dragos Takes A Holiday byThea Harrison

The Bermuda Triangle. Pirates. The Peanut. What could possibly go wrong?

Dragos Cuelebre needs a vacation. So does Pia, his mate. When the First Family of the Wyr head to Bermuda for some much needed R&R, it's no ordinary undertaking - and no ordinary weekend in the sun. Between hunting for ancient treasure buried beneath the waves and keeping track of their son, Liam—a.k.a. Peanut, whose Wyr abilities are manifesting far ahead of schedule—it’s a miracle that Pia and Dragos can get any time together.

They're determined to make the most of each moment, no matter who tries to get in their way. And did we mention pirates?

5. Insufficient Mating Material by Rowena Cherry

Commander Jason's true identity as Prince Djetthro-Djason has been uncovered, and he's forced to mate with the ruling prince's sister, Martia-Djulia. But this is not the punishment it seems. Though Djetth and Martia's one night of passion was mistakenly triggered by another's scent, Djetth is rather fond of his high-maintenance bride-to-be. Unfortunately, she's pining for his presumed dead alter ego--if only he can convince her she can love him regardless of his name. "Spunky" isn't often used to describe older heroines, but everything good about the word is perfect for Martia-Djulia, who acts as a wonderful foil to Djetth's unconventional courtship in this sequel to Forced Mate (2004).

6. The Sweetest Dark by Shana Abe

Lora Jones has always known that she’s different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora’s been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England’s southern coast. Iverson’s eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.

Jesse is the school’s groundskeeper—a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she’s only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

7. Burning Up (Berkley Sensation) by Angela Knight, Virginia Kantra and Meljean Brook

Virginia Kantra continues the haunting tales of the Children of the Sea in her story of a wounded soldier rescued by an enigmatic young woman.

8. Collecting (Return of the Nine) by Viola Grace

Collecting the tools needed for survival is her talent, but a male of the Water Folk is something she is dying to add to her collection.

Emharo has spent her time collecting biological samples from the world around her and giving them to her family for analysis. She can find anything you need—you just have to ask.

Rivvin is a member of the Water Folk, and from the first time he saw this woman in his element, he knew that she was far more than she appeared to be and far more vulnerable than she pretended to be. She will be a challenging mate and a feisty partner if he can only convince her that she needs to add him to her collection.

9.
Virgin (The Cat Star Chronicles) by Cheryl Brooks

He's never met anyone who made him purr... Starship pilot Dax never encountered a woman he wanted badly enough. Until he met Ava Karon... And he'll never give his body without giving his heart... Dax is happy to take Ava back to her home planet, until he finds out she's returning to an old boyfriend... As their journey together turns into a quest neither expected, Ava would give herself to Dax in a heartbeat. Except he doesn't know the first thing about seducing a woman...

10.  Soul Song: A Dirk & Steele Novel by Marjorie M. Liu

In her newest Dirk & Steele novel, Liu introduces fiddle player Kitala Bell, cursed with the ability to foresee people's deaths, and merman M'Cal, slave to a soul-stealing witch. When M'Cal's cruel master orders M'Cal to steal Kitala's soul, he's loathe to carry through with it but can't stop himself—or the witch. Unsuspecting Kit, meanwhile, has gotten herself in dutch with some local criminals while trying to help a girl she's sure will be murdered. By the time M'Cal catches up with Kit, he's forced into the role of rescuer—and, before long, red-hot lover. Though it starts slow—as clueless Kit must become acquainted with the author's paranormal underworld—Liu's latest is a clever, finely constructed take on the Little Mermaid story and delivers great paranormal suspense. Though the love story lacks complexity, and the Dirk & Steele detectives play only a peripheral part, all the other elements Liu fans expect—a strong heroine, a damaged hero, sharp dialogue and funny, fanciful details—are well-represented, making this a satisfying return to her universe.

Wanted: One Special Kiss (Starlight Trilogy, Book 2)
Wanted: One Special Kiss - Judi McCoy Kiss of Night is a refreshing change from all the new vampire stories, where they shine, have power over elements, or are even part alive. The vampires in this story are very much dead, are comatose during the day, burn in the face of holy items, and are even affected by garlic! Raphael (male lead and sexiest vampire in Prague) needs her help in the upcoming battle to save humanity from the evil vampires. Susan’s help is crucial since her family has been involved in this from the beginning. She even seems to have some innate holy powers which are not really explored during this book, but I’m sure will play a big part in the following novels. David is plunged into this battle by being one of the few people who can resist a vampires mesmerizing gaze. Together they will work to find and stop an evil vampire with a god complex and his pet a mad vampire scientist. I have to say I was hesitant to pick this up since it’s posted as Christian Fiction, but the story sounded quite exciting. I’m glad I did give it a chance. There are no preachy parts whatsoever, and there is a nice explanation to the existence of vampires (though I seriously doubt any Catholic would be so cool about it). It even has a kickass fight and some gory parts at the end! Oh and the vampire Rottweilers were terrific. I was pleased with the characters, though not with the many changing POVs and flashbacks since it made for a choppy story at times. I would have just been happy with Raphael and Susan’s POV. Raphael…Ahhh. His smirk-y sexy self had me swooning the whole time. Although he has had all this time to atone for his sins he can’t forgive himself for being a monster. This is why I liked Susan because she knows Raphael is not a bad person.I will certainly be looking out for the next installment in this series. I can’t wait to know more about the secret of Susan’s necklace, and see where her chemistry with Raphael leads. *I received this book via Netgalley from the publisher in exchange for my honest review*
