Clancy before Clancy
The Sunset Patriots - Charles D. Taylor

In an effort to reestablish détente between his country and the Soviet Union, the President of the United States agrees to send the Seventh Fleet on a visit to Vladivostok. This intended gesture of goodwill, however, is part of a complex plot by the Soviet Union designed to seize control of the oil fields beneath the South China Sea. Worried about Soviet intentions, the director of naval intelligence, Admiral Thomas Magnuson, recruits four ex-sailors to serve as covert agents in an operation designed to uncover the Soviets' plan and aid the Chinese in response. But will Magnuson's men succeed in unraveling the Soviets' plot . . . or will the Soviets succeed in unraveling China's friendship with the U.S. and driving the Chinese out of the Pacific?

Years before Tom Clancy became a bestselling author, Charles D. Taylor wrote a number of Cold War novels depicting brave Americans standing up to Soviet machinations. Reading them today, though, it's easy to see why Clancy eclipsed him. While Taylor's premise in this novel is interesting, he fails to develop the level of suspense need for a thriller of this type. Part of the reason for this is Taylor's awkward approach to developing his characters, which consists of long flashbacks dropped throughout the first half of the book. These extended digressions add little to the book, as the main characters are largely indistinguishable from one another: the Americans are all fit Navy or ex-Navy servicemembers, the Chinese brave and proud, and the Soviets conniving and drinkers of copious amounts of vodka. Better developed action scenes might have addressed this, but even the climactic naval battle at the end of the novel — ostensibly Taylor's forte as a writer — is tepid and predictable. To the extent it deserves to be read today it's as representational of a genre of literature now three decades in the past rather than an exciting works that still holds up well today.

Sunset Bay Sanctuary
Sunset Bay Sanctuary (A Sunset Bay Novel) - Roxanne Willems Snopek

Haylee and Mac both have had tragic pasts. This book covered so much- there was death of a child and parents, teenage pregnancy, adoption, the adoptive parents are horrible trope, animals are healing. There was so much going on. There were so many characters too. I had a hard time connecting with both leads. I probably would have given this a 3*, but then something happened that I really didn't like.

sex with no mention of condom use. And yes, Haylee got pregnant! I thought this was a bit of a 180 for her character. She and Mac didn't discuss having kids, so yeah. (At least I don't remember a conversation)

(spoiler show)

I read this for Romance-opoly Emergency Services Sun track square

24 Festive Tasks: Door 6 - Veterans' / Armistice Day: Task 4

I took a short walk in the woods above Bonn yesterday late afternoon, just before sunset.  Here are a few impressions ... duly beginning with the area map!

This shows the entire trail -- I only went a short way, though, from the top left parking lot to a bit beyond the first "info station".  It takes a few hours to complete the entire trail.

(Task: The Forest of Compiègne, just outside Compiègne, France, is the site of the signing of the 1918 Armistice.  It was also the site of the signing by the French of a truce with the Germans following the German invasion in 1940. – Find a green space in your local area (or favorite area), go for a walk or bike ride of a mile (or 1.61 km) and post a picture or screenshot of the map of where you walked / biked.)

Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach – it comes with a twist.

Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job.

It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions.

With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon.

My thoughts
Rating: 5
Would I recommend this book? A Big Yes ( in fact as soon as I saw Netgalley had it to request I went and told a friend she had to request it)
Will I read any more by her? a big yes
When it comes to Mary Kay Andrews's books there always warm , fuzzy and fun to read , no mater what the season is or what your day is like, their easy reads that you can pick up and just set back and enjoy with a touch of romance and mystery that will make you smile and laugh out loud, their the perfect beach reads or if you just when you want something to brightening your day or night , because she has a way with her characters that will make you just set there and shake your head at the shenanigans they get in to. AS with this book Sunset Beach , before you know it your felling in love with the characters , and wanting to visit the places that are mentioned in it. So if you haven't picked up her books you need to do so . With that said I want to thank Beatrice at St.Martins as well as Netgalley for letting read and review Sunset Beach exchange for my honest opinion , and I can't wait to read more by her books.
