REVIEW TOUR, EXCERPT & #GIVEAWAY - In My Skin (The Obsidian Files #3) by Shannon McKenna
In My Skin (The Obsidian Files #3) - Shannon McKenna
In My Skin is the third book in The Obsidian Files series, and we catch up with Luke who was kidnapped in book one. He managed to escape by himself, but is so very alone, as he can't remember who he is, or who he needs to contact. This was done deliberately to ensure that the 'bad guys' couldn't get any information from him, but it's left him in a bit of a bind. He has a plan to put it right though, which lands him firmly by Dani's side.

The majority of the book is dedicated to Luke and Dani, with the others only appearing briefly. However, they are all together at the ending. Luke is a wonderful combination of being literal, being naive, and being strong alpha-male. Dani is, for the most part, a strong and sassy heroine with her own issues, but I also found her annoying at times. There were times when they SHOULD have talked about things, but instead, they had sex. Lots of sex (although I don't think as much as Noah and Caro did, so that was one bonus).

The story was well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. I enjoyed the pacing, and the transitions from one scene to the next were smooth. Not everyone gets a happy ending, although I am hoping for a miracle! Hopefully I will find out in a later book.

If you want a contemporary, science-fiction romance, then I can definitely recommend this.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Good Story and Characters
In For the Kill (The McCloud Brothers Series) - Shannon McKenna

Sam was obsessed with Sveti and Sam had been a cop but he wasn’t any longer. Sam felt he had been a scape goat. Sam finally is given a chance to spend a little time with Sveti and he points out to her that she can’t help anyone if she was dead. Sam had heard from her friends that Sveti was getting death threats. Sveti told Sam that it was a hand delivered letter saying “ they” were going to kill her. Sveti then asked Sam why he wasn’t like most men and afraid of her. Then Sveti relaxed in Sam’s arms. Sam doesn’t know this but Sveti is a little obsessed with him. Sveti decided he had to be Sveti’s bodyguard to make sure she was okay or die trying. Eventually Sveti does sleep with Sam.

This was a great story. I was a little confused as I hadn’t read the other books in this series so that was my fault. But things pretty much come together so I knew what was going on and why. There were some hot sex scenes, some really evil bad guys and some very good action in this story. The plot was great and the characters were great.I really liked the twists and turns of this story and I recommend. But I recommend to read the other books to this story forst I am going to go back and read them.

I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

Right Through Me Mini-Review
Right Through Me (The Obsidian Files Book 1) - Shannon McKenna

Right Through Me is the first book in Shannon McKenna's new series, The Obsidian Files. I adore her books and this one was no different. I'd categorize it as paranormal romantic suspense, which is where her McCloud series ended up as well.

Right Through Me is about Noah, the leader of a group of modified supersoldiers, and Caro, a woman who witnessed a murder and is wanted by the big bad (also a modified supersoldier) for her brain wave ability to open something. Noah and his friends have taken new identities and become billionaires by creating bio-tech inventions, BUT, they also want to get back at the group of psychopaths--the Obsidian group--who experimented on them and then wanted to destroy them.

I loved the opening scene where Caro is hired as a belly-dancer to surprise Noah--during a board meeting. It was intense, awkward, and sexy. We got an up-close of how Noah's modifications fritz-out. It's almost like heavy applications of sexytimes would help him...*cough.

Caro was plucky and strong and caring. She grudgingly accepts Noah's help but she really wants to clean up her own mess. I loved her independence even though I wanted to tell her to trust Noah much sooner than she did. Noah is a bossy, control freak alpha male, who tends toward watch-and-see to keep the people he cares about safe. I won't spoil this, but, trust that he has to change these views. (Heh.) I appreciated his alpha tendencies, mostly because he worked hard to reign them in with Caro and he doesn't venture into alpha-hole territory.

The sexytimes were awesome. Hot--so hot!--with the connection between Noah and Caro turning and tightening with each scene.

The paranormal world-building was great--techy but with a focus on the human experience of being changed (and tortured) as well as the emotional cost of such enhancements. Backstory was handled well--little sprinkles and no info-dumps. McKenna's scenes are intense and, and, at times, violent, but not over the top for me.

TW: for threatened sexual assault and threats about hurting a child; plenty of fight scenes, some of which are a bit gory.

So excited about this new series! *fangirl-flails

The Knight Next Door
Out Of Control - Shannon McKenna

Reading this at night before bed stretched out the process, but it was worth it. There's something about Shannon McKenna's way of writing romance. It's utterly sighworthy but extremely earthy. Sometimes I think a sacrifice is made with extra-steamy romance to convey the eroticism, and often the diehard romance is left behind. Not so with McKenna. Davy thinks he's the knight saving the princess, but he's pretty darn messed up. Margot really is an alpha heroine in a good way. When the book takes place, she's in a bad way, but it's clear that she's a very independent, competent woman. Davy spends most of the book confused and delusional about being in love with Margot, which I think would be very hard to deal with. Margot admit she's in love with Davy and he sort of throws it in her face, but at the same time, his behavior towards her suggests that he's deeply emotionally entangled with her. He is the King of Mixed Signals. I wasn't too angry at Margot when she has a crisis of faith in Davy. Based on what she's been through in the previous eight months and a history of not being able to trust men, especially men that she couldn't control the scope of their relationship with. Davy is not a man who can be compartmentalized or controlled. That's for sure. I like Margot a lot and I think she's a good match for Davy. Davy was a bit of a putz at times, but still lovable and lickable.

The villain is one sick puppy, for reals. It was a different twist. This villain being a student of the Death Touch. Being the martial arts geek I am, well I thought that was pretty interesting. His relationship with his brother was a study in dysfunctional family relationships. He was a formidable villain and definitely able to match Davy in his own enviable martial arts abilities. I wish the climax hadn't been so abrupt. I would have liked to see more of a drawn out confrontation between these two and the controlling older brother getting his just deserts in a more descriptive fashion.

It was lovely to see the other McCloud brothers and associates. They are a special bunch. The dialogue is classic. Since I read Fatal Strike before this, it was special to see Miles as the geeky apprentice. He's adorable!

This one isn't a five star book for me. I think it's more like a 4.25 star read. It doesn't have the intensity of some of my other favorites, but it's still a very good book.

Overall rating: 4.25/5.0 stars.
