THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR Review
Red Dragon - Thomas Harris

The chief job of a psychological thriller author is to keep his or her reader invested to the end of the tale. Mysteries don’t require exquisite character work. They don’t have to be challenging. But books like The Couple Next Door — short books obviously meant for beach and airport reading — should engage. On that level, this book fails. At least in its final forty perfect.

This is the story of a kidnapping. While gone to a dinner party, a young couple’s baby girl is kidnapped from their home. The search and investigation is immediately on. One of the few things this book does have going for it is its pace: it is hard to put this one down once begun, despite its putrid latter half.

I was invested for a while. I didn’t like any of the characters (a failure on the author’s part, as it is obvious these people are supposed to be sympathetic) but I did want to find out what happened to baby Cora. And . . . the reader is told some hundred pages before the ending. Yet the story carries on as if this information hasn’t been given, and I was forced to trudge through leads I knew were a dead end. This book clocks in at only 308 pages, but man, it dragged after a point. A few minor twists are revealed after the fact, but they are rather inconsequential and silly. The ending made me roll my eyes and curse my impulses, for I bought this MF’er new at Barnes and Noble.

This tries to be a psychological thriller, and for a while it almost works . . . until it doesn’t. The mystery at the center of this story is compelling — what happened to the baby? — but the characters are borderline unbearable, the resolution is flimsy, and numerous foundational issues are present. Beware.

Release Day 4 STAR Review! Highland Dragon Rebel (Dawn of the Highland Dragon #2) Isabel Cooper
Highland Dragon Rebel (Dawn of the Highland Dragon) - Isabel Cooper

Madoc of Avandos is on a journey to cement alliances. Targeted by an assassin, he needs a companion who can fight. When dragon shifter Moiread MacAlasdair returns from war, he knows she's the best woman for the job. Duty and political strength compel Moiread to agree, but when they cross into the otherworld and Madoc's life is threatened, Moiread jumps into protection mode-and will do whatever it takes to keep the man of her dreams alive.

Moiread and Madoc are brought to brilliant life as readers join them on their quest to protect the future of Wales. Along the way the couple enjoy a light hearted romance that they both seem to believe can’t really go any further due to some pretty interesting concerns which keeps readers wondering until the very end.

Their romance as well as their quest is fraught with danger and suspense as assassins seem to pop up everywhere with the determination to keep them from accomplishing their goal. The thrilling uncertainty certainly keeps readers on the edge of their seat as magic and dragons add wonder and excitement for readers and characters alike.

The story is set in long ago Scotland, England and Wales as well as another magical realm which adds spice and beauty to the journey for the readers and the pace is a nice even one that keeps readers glued to the pages. I have to say that keeping the romance on such an intriguing last minute timeline kept the “happily ever after” in question throughout and then there was a spectacular final battle between Madoc, Moiread and the assassin to liven things up while adding an inspired and surprising twist that I didn’t see coming.

I haven’t read the first book in the Dawn of the Highland Dragon series yet, but I am definitely going to be remedying that before the release of Highland Dragon Master in March and not just because I love dragon shifters. Isabel Cooper used well written descriptions to paint vibrant settings and brilliant characters that I just fell in love with so I can’t wait to visit the Highland Dragons once again.

Highland Dragon Rebel is the 2nd book in the Dawn of the Highland Dragon series.

Dragon Wars
Dragon Wars - Emily Fogle

I received this book to give an honest review.

So I have had this book for a long time. I never felt my son was fully ready to listen to the story and understand fully what it all contained.

I honestly was glad I waited because K was really enjoying the story. Danny is a normal kid who has to move to a new town with his mom. His mom is very caring and worries about him. One day when he is suppose to be cleaning his room he finds a magic box and book what he discovers is a whole new world. Though it seems that this new world is in peril. Danny finds out that the dragon world Dorcian needs his help. With his new friends Gor and Ebby among a few other dragons and new creatures there will be a battle. While Danny is learning about this new amazing world Dorcian he also has to deal with the bullying from school. Danny rather be fighting a war rather than deal with this bully. Will the good actually win this battle with evil in Dorcian or is the enchantress have turned this world so evil. Ebby as a dragon is lucky she never turned out evil because she is so good hearted and has a lot on her shoulders. You can tell it breaks her heart to see her world wrapped in evil and that some of her fellow brothers and sisters in the clutches of evil.

I think that with Danny being in Dorcian he really learns how to be courageous and stand up to the bad. It is like he has grown.

The one thing that K and I both really enjoyed was how much descriptions were used to describe what was felt and seen. I honestly do not think I have ever had a book that was so full of description that it feels like you are right there in the book.

Now I will say this book took us about a month to read it, just because the chapters were long and we would only read about 15 to 20 minutes a night.

K did tell me that he liked how there were hand drawn pictures in the book and thought that they were really cool. His favorite part were with the little men who rode ants but yet remember they are not little they are big. You have to make sure you know this or feel their wrath.   K did want to know if there was another book because he really liked this story.
