The View From Prince Street
The View from Prince Street (Alexandria Series) - Mary Ellen Taylor
Alexandria Series #2

A special thank you to Penguin/Berkley and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Mary Ellen Taylor returns following At The Corner of King Street (Alexandria #1) with a complex multi-generational mystery of the past THE VIEW FROM PRINCE STREET(Alexandria #2) rich in history; with three families crossing two centuries-- mystery, intrigue and some ancient magic to stir the pot.

As the locals read the weekly Lifestyle edition and the online version of the Old Town Alexandria paper, Dr. Rae McDonald is known to have a heart of stone, however, some think she is a matchmaker, trying to help her clients find happiness.

In fact, Rae knows sadness, all too well. It had nearly destroyed her at age sixteen when her old sister had died, and thereafter she had made reckless choices that resulted in a pregnancy. She gave the baby boy away to another mother for adoption. The pain and the loss were crushing. Since that day she knew her survival depended suppressing her feelings. Her detachment had served her well. She can remove herself from her client’s storms, problems, and her own emotions.

We meet up with the MaCrae’s we met in book one—Addie Morgan and Margaret McCrae, owners of Shire Architectural --the contractors who removed her stones six weeks ago. Addie is raising her niece, Carrie, eight weeks old. Addie was saving her family’s business for the brink of ruin. Margaret worked full time with the salvage company but still maintained close ties to the archeology center. She had a PhD in History and was a well- qualified expert in local history, especially Alexandria.

They had read about Rae, the trained clinical psychologist in the paper. They had found a bottle. A witch bottle. An incredible find. Protection spells. They were created hundreds of years ago by people who feared black magic. They were designed to ward off a witch’s spells and evil curses. Most were typically made of wine bottles filled with all kinds of sharp objects. (to cut or slice into the magic). Curses? A witch.

One of the bottles they found belonged to Addie’s family. Sarah Shire Goodwin buried that one. Patience McDonald buried the one they found on Rae’s property and Imogen Smyth made the one they found on the Prince Street Property. All three women lived in Alexandria around 1750.

As the book flashes back from the eighteenth century to the present we find the connections of three Alexandria families. At the beginning of the novel, it opens with a letter in 1751. A bind between these three families. A dangerous barter.

Rae's sister’s best friend Lisa Smyth survived the crash, but never told the truth about it. As long-buried artifacts that link their family histories are unearthed, both women are forced to confront the secrets of the past, before they can have a future.

Secrets. Choices.  A Buried past.

As the book moves along, both Rae and Lisa are at a crossroads in their lives. The ties that bind. Face the past in order to have a future.
“Past, Present, and Future are links in a chain. For a chain to be strong you must have all the links. Not the ones you select. “A thought provoking question: Can you live in the now without acknowledging the problems of the past?

Ultimately, an emotional Heartwarming novel of motherhood, forgiveness, letting go of the past, and second chances. As always you can count on Mary Ellen Taylor to deliver a bold life lesson, a strong takeaway message, and some savory recipes. This time Rachel at The Union Street Bakery offers her Lemon Polenta Cookies and Never Too Much Chocolate Chip Cookies.

An excellent choice for book clubs or further reading group discussions with questions included. If you have not read The Union Street Bakery series, highly recommend!

A special thank you to Random House/Ballantine Books, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Yeah! So delighted to be hosting an upcoming Book Giveaway Contest on behalf of Random House, August 11-18 for a chance to win a complimentary copy (1 of 3) of the much awaited, BLACK EYED SUSANS.  Enter Here

A complex, multi-layered, well researched, and deliciously twisted psychological suspense thriller by talented Julia Heaberlin. You are in for a rare treat . . block out the time, for a chilling roller coaster ride!

Now, let’s get down to this exciting new contemporary book with a gal in the middle of a wildflower patch on the cover, in an open field; a heroine, with a strong compelling voice.

I started reading this one in the middle of a move, crazy, right? So all I was thinking about when packing, unpacking, and driving. . getting back to the book to solve the mystery. Talk about torture! A book to read uninterrupted.

Set in Texas, meet Tessa, the only survivor of a serial killer, and buried alive with Five Susans in all—one dead girl named Merry, three gnawed-on nobodies, and Tessa. She is the one who should have answers. The others were dug up from their first hiding place and tossed in the field with her like chicken bones. Tessa was thrown on top with a girl named Merry who had been dead for more than a day. At first an EMT to arrive at the scene thought she was dead too.

The serial killing was dubbed Black-Eyed Susans, due to the abandoned burial site area being surrounded by a field of wildflowers. As we move back and forth from the innocent Tess, of age sixteen, a runner---to a traumatized victim with years of therapy, and no memory of the events, to the execution of the man charged for the brutal act.

Part One, readers go back and forth from Tessa and Tessie, (1995) and present day. Then we move to Part Two, centered around Sept, 1995 for a countdown by day, until days before the execution (of Terrell Goodwin), the convicted murderer. Part Three we hear from Tessa and Lydia at age 16 and 17 and present day to the grand finale.

However, is Terrell the real sadistic murderer, or is he innocent, and who is the real killer? Tessa thinks Terrell may not be the guilty one; however, time is running out, and now she may be trying to help save his life.

Presently, Tessa is a single mother of a teen, and she is overly protective of her own teenage daughter, Charlie. We also get to hear from another character, Lydia (hold on to your seat for this one) . . Tessa’s best friend.

Now, in the cold of February, Tessa is shocked to discover a freshly planted patch of black-eyed Susans—a summer and fall bloom, just outside her bedroom window. Terrified at what this may mean – she may have sent the wrong man to prison, and the real killer remains at large.

With some forensics experts, bones, legalities, and technology; not available years earlier, with DNA, the man behind bars ready to be executed may be innocent; after all, she could never identify him since she has lost her memories of the time. There was no solid DNA evidence against Terrell, except a tattered jacket mired in the mud a mile away with his blood type on the right cuff.

Tessa wants nothing more than to put this nightmare behind her; however, she has to try and recall what happened, and strangely she begins seeing patches of black eyed Susans planted in familiar places. Could the killer still be out there taunting her? Now, you have to read the book to get the juicy parts--will leave your head, spinning. As the clock ticks toward the execution, Tessa fears for her sanity, but even more for the safety of her teenaged daughter.

There has been so much hype around BLACK EYED SUSANS; “believe it”—Spellbinding! My first book by Julia and was blown away – this gal can write and brings new meaning to a "red herring." In addition, you will never look at the flower the same -- "an army of giant black and yellow flowers with angry faces." The black-eyed Susan, traditionally symbolizes “Justice” makes a very nice cut-flower with a vase life up to 10 days—go figure.

I agree with another reviewer—BLACK EYED SUSANS is unique, and in a class all its own, far exceeding the other two comparisons: Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. Enjoyed the OJ references (January 24, 1995) as recall it so well; a case described as the most publicized criminal trial in American history; Simpson was acquitted after a trial that lasted more than eight months—he got off the same year Tessa testified.

The good part. Oh my, what a surprise – Texans are not all about southern talk, big hair and flashy clothes (bum rap)-- this gal knows her stuff, and what incredible research! I am all about research, reference, consulting, and backing up your smack. Julia delivers a superb slow- burning sizzler, with the usage of some incredible forensic science, therapy in psychic trauma, an intense depth into the legalities of executions. I also enjoyed hearing from each character, past and present, the good and bad, with humor and darkness, offering a wide range of perspectives, for an ideal book club pick.

If you could go to the end of the book to the Acknowledgements' section (without peaking at anything else), and read the highly impressive list of credentials, research, and expertise, before reading the book, you will come to appreciate the author’s effort and time into this well researched novel, while reading. This is not a book to rush through—you need to think and keep up.

After reading, I spent quite a bit of time, engrossed with further online research, per the author's references, especially, Anthony Graves, a man wrongly accused—of killing a family of six. Watch the videos—a heart-felt story.

I am really enjoying the drama unfolding from novels today focused around the wrongly accused (the legal, crime, forensics), and innocent projects--when looking at older cases when information was not readily available. I recently read Marti Green’s The Price of Justice (7/21/15), a complex multi-layered legal crime suspense about a teen wrongly accused years earlier for a rape, only days from execution. Have read all the books in the (HIPP) Helping Innocent Prisoner’s Project- recommend.

I look forward to reading more from Julia and her previous books. BLACK EYED SUSANS is an intense and compelling psychological thriller, of relationships, demons, hope and survival-- keeping your guessing to the end. Loved reading about the author; a great sense of humor.

Lisa Unger fans will dig this one!

Lauraine Snelling, master storyteller once again delivers a contemporary heart-warming story SOMEDAY HOME, of life changes- real life challenges, especially for baby boomers and those approaching this age range today (myself, included). Snelling delves into the realistic issues of today’s modern day single woman – for any age, status, or background.

Each woman, will find themselves at a crossroad; however, these challenges which may initially appear to be hopeless, and fearful, causing stress and concern for their future--may open new doors, leading these women to new and exciting adventures; hope for financial and emotional security--reinvention, and some special new friendships and family along the way.

Meet the three women facing a life-changing dilemma. Each women will need to make some personality changes in order to become a non-traditional family unit.

Lynn, age 52 years old, has lost her husband. She has raised her three children and now they have their own families, she is now a grandmother. Who knew she would be in this situation at this time of her life? This is not the life she had in mind. Money is tight and her children of course are trying persuade her to sell the family home, and build something smaller next to their house. (no thanks).

She does not want to sell the house with so many memories, she hang on to. There has to be some other way? She resents her children for trying to nose into her life and business. She has a beautiful home on Lake Barnett and Paul’s old hunting lab, Orson has kept her company; now he is gone. What else can happen? She is currently in the middle of self-pity. Now Menopause?? After all, Paul died one year and nine months ago. She should be over this now? She is overwhelmed with decisions to make. Where is God and why does she feel alone?

Lynn has this beautiful two-story farmhouse with long verandas and plenty of yard to play in, and their family plumbing business. Her house is too big and she needs financial help in order to maintain. When her doctor mentions house-sharing she is all ears. Could there possibly be other women out there with a need? Can she open her home to others, with their own rooms, and share a kitchen and living space? Where will she find these women? Will she have to give up her privacy?

Angela, a successful commercial real estate broker, accustomed to the finer things of life, is preparing for a special dinner date with her husband Jack-- her little black dress, heels, jewelry, and new hairdo. Her husband likes the perfect wife, he is demanding – he likes sexy and successful. She has managed to accomplish both to please him. She hopes this will be a new start for their marriage. Her husband of twenty-five years is good-looking and a heart-stopper, and looks good in his red Porsche (he is going through a bit of a mid-life crisis).

They have a great dinner with dessert, dancing, and then he blindsides her at the end of the evening. He has filed for divorce! So instead of celebrating their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, he wants a divorce? So now, how will she maintain her lifestyle on real estate commission in a bad market? What about their two children? With a divorce pending and income dribbling in and close to drying up. She cannot afford to keep up the family home. Where will she live. Jerk!

Judith, has spent her entire life sacrificing her happiness, and time taking care of her mom and dad. Her mom died five years earlier and her father had been in a wheelchair since he broke his back years before. As the sole caregiver, she gets a slap in the face when she discovers the Old Rutherford House, listed on the historical registry will now turn into a living museum. Judith wants a dog or cat or a place in the country for chickens, which of course her dad would not allow when he was alive. Thank goodness she had a small trust on her grandmother on her mother’s side. She could fight the trust or become the administrator, of the heritage center, but she needs a place to live.

She is bitter, and if her father did not think enough of her to leave her a home, she wants to escape the house and all the work which goes along with preparing it. What an ungrateful father! Now where will she live? He had promised to provide for her in return for years of service. And she believed him! Now what will she do with the rest of her life? Is it too late to start a new life? Her cousin Melody offers to allow her to stay with their family as their children are grown. However, even though she ran her father’s business, for years, she has no real skills, and considers going back to school. She has no clue what she will do.

Lynn begins conducting research on the subject of house-sharing, and appears this is a new trend (really an old trend dressed up to fit today’s world). Years ago, an aging sister or cousin would share a home or and older woman inviting a younger member of the family to live with them.

Today, with divorce, death, a declining job market, single women still working even after social security, or other financial hardship, a woman may find it difficult to maintain a household with only one salary, or one social security income. Home-sharing is really no different than younger college age or twenty-thirty somethings sharing an apartment or condo while in school or in an earlier career. Moving in with grown children is not always a good option in order to maintain your own lifestyle and privacy.

However, as we age, most of us become set in our ways and accustomed to living alone. Can three strong personalities share a home and respect one another’s privacy? When you put three women together under one roof, can they get along? What if it does not work out? She begins to hear horror stories.

From researching menopause, to figuring out what she has to do to prepare her house for 4 separate private bedrooms, sitting areas, bath, and garage space, she finds herself getting excited. What will her kids say? Lynn worries if she will have to give up her traditions of having her family over to visit and her personal space. The more she thinks about it, she feels this is a good idea and asks for God’s guidance. He will lead her to the right women, and she begins preparing her house for her new potential tenants.

Three women come together, as their paths cross; each needing one another for financial reasons, as well as security, friendship and reinvention. Three different women from different walks of life share tears, laughter, joys and sorrows, while the old farmhouse on the lake comes alive with new life; however, each of them have to make changes in order to fit into their new shared lifestyle as they come to rely on one another for a newfound family of friends.

One finds peace without hanging on to an old life, another finds a sense of freedom from emotional abuse, another has gained sisters, a support system, a family and new adventures. A poignant novel of hope, faith and love. Highly recommend for a woman of any age, you will relate to SOMEDAY HOME and its flawed and caring characters, mixed with humor and life lessons.

I recently finished reading Dorothea Benton Frank’s All The Single Ladies featuring three women of varying ages, finding themselves in dire need of help, and all three move in together with a ninety-year-old woman in a large house to share the living expenses.

A contemporary subject which many women are facing, or may be in years to come. I was introduced to Lauraine Snelling last year when I had the opportunity to read her Heaven Sent Rain, and fell in love with her stories.

What an inspiring story, as many women will relate to the circumstances! We all must be willing to embrace change as our lives take different directions. Change is good, as I can speak from experience. Such an uplifting novel, as God closes one door, He again opens another, by bringing people into our lives at just the right time. Sometimes it does not always have to be the traditional family, but our friends, experiencing similar lifestyle choices. Love the front cover, drawing you in.
