Tempting Fate (Nugget #10)Nugget #10, I don't know if I ever said it in one of my reviews but I know I thought that I wouldn't care if Raylene ever got her own HEA, but I'm glad she did. She's the person everyone loves to hate and she finally meets someone who sees behind all the shine and snootiness and saw the head strong determined woman who regrets everything she did to the town she once loved; especially hurting the two people who loved her the most and now she's lost everything. She can't forgive herself because the town won't forgive her. I think this is one of those books that is best when you've read the other books in the series, but Raylene does have some flashbacks of her worst moments that fill in the blanks, or you can read Getting Lucky and Falling Hard those are the two with her story in them.

Gabe Moretti runs a business with Raylene's half brother, Logan. Logan asks Gabe to keep an eye on Raylene since she's not the most loved person in Nugget he wants to make sure she stay out of trouble and had back-up if she needs it. Gabe has heard the rumors about Raylene and it's not hard for him to believe it all but he finds it hard that the people from a the town that so far has been welcome and inviting can hate someone so much. Raylene has two things she wants to accomplish after Logan and Annie's wedding before she can finally move on from Nugget and never look back, find the gold her ancestor buried and sell off the last remaining plot of her family's land. After she finds her gold and sells off the land she can give the women's shelter she's been volunteering at the money they need to stay open and finally have enough start up money to start her own horse training ranch. But she has to find the gold first and Gabe insists on helping. Little things keep happening that raises suspicion that Raylene isn't the only ones out there looking for the gold.

Overall, this was a really good read. It was emotional not only between Raylene and Gabe but between her and the town she did some pretty low and horrible things and you can tell how much she regrets do them it really showed how much Raylene had changed since the beginning. The end was very exciting. I was surprised by how quickly the whole town flipped on their feelings for Raylene but hate isn't the opposite of love and they all loved her once they just needed something to love her for that was enough to forgive her of her past sins.

ARC Review: Borrowing Trouble by Kade Boehme
Borrowing Trouble - Kade Boehme

Landon is in his late twenties, working for his dad's company as a truck driver/office manager. He'd hoped to be a teacher, and went to college for that, but then his dad needed help, and so he helped. He's gay, but not out, and keeps to himself, what with living in a small town in the South where everyone knows everyone, and everyone wants to know your business.

Then Daddy tells Landon that he's hired a new guy to take over the office duties, and Landon's all happy about that, until he finds out that the new guy is Jay, his one-time babysitter's BF, who's now divorced but straight, and whom Landon crushed on as his teenage self.

But the guy is straight, so Landon knows there's nothing gonna happen, which probably leads to quite a few times of self-abuse (off-page), but the two men do become sort of friends who hang out.

And then things start happening, with Jay finding himself thinking more and more of Landon, and then thinking that maybe he isn't as straight as he thought, and doing some self-searching.

What I really liked about this book is that the characters are actually dealing with their shit, instead of sticking their heads in the sand and hoping it'll go away. Jay especially seeks professional help and doesn't start avoiding Landon, as he figures out what's happening to him.

Their relationship efforts are complicated by Jay's ex-wife and mother of his two kids. As it happens so often in small southern towns, Jay got married when he knocked up his GF at a young age, and the marriage goes to shit when they actually grow up. At least they're still friendly and supportive of each other. Except for when Jay and Landon are found out, and the ex-wife has a small hissy fit (not that I blamed her), but Jay stays the course he's on.

All too often, romance books will employ the "big drama" and the "I must leave you for your own good" and the "I just can't deal" BS, and I was glad to see that didn't happen here. Landon was respectful of Jay's confusion and never pushed, and Jay was trying to find his true self, without kicking Landon out of his life in fear. They actually had conversation, OMG, real, mature, adult conversations, and it helped their relationship prosper.

Well done, Kade.

As for the sexy times, they surely furthered the plotline, and there's one scene with a BJ that was as dirty as it was emotional.

I really, really liked this book a lot! Give it a try, for sure!

I don't want to be one of those readers that judge an author based only one book. I have to try this. I love GFY book!

Borrowing Trouble
Borrowing Trouble - Kade Boehme

Alright, this is going to be hard.

Because I adore Kade Boehme, as a person and as a writer. He and his books are always authentic, alsways real, always funny and smart and sexy and everything else I like - in books and people.

And I liked the MCs in this story, too. Jay is a sweatheart. Unsure of his sexualtiy, he likes his uncomplicated life, even though he does have his ups and downs with his ex-wife and his level of contentedness. And I loved Landon. Sure of his sexuality, but not exactly clear on what exactly he wants to do with the rest of his (love) life, he is one adorable and loveable guy. The story line also worked fine for me. I know some complained about the ex being an awful harpy - again. I didn't think so. Yes, she was upset first and said some pretty awful things. But come on! Her ex - the one she might or might not still have had positive and negative feelings for - just told her he was gay and blamed himself for the failure of their marriage. So she had a freak out moment - I felt like she might have been a tiny little bit entitled to it. Plus, she came around pretty fast afterwards and apologized. That's not what a harpy looks like to me. So yeah, I didn't have a problem with that, either.

I'm really sad to say it, but this time the writing was the thing turned me off. Parts of it felt too stilted. Sometimes I was wondering if it was really Kade Boehme who wrote this, because every so often a sentence, an akward phrasing or a conversation that felt too forced and wrong, threw me so completely, I couldn't really enjoy the book. It pains me, it really does, but this didn't click with me. Which is a real shame because I could have loved it so much, but I didn't, because for the first time ever the writing absolutely didn't work for me.
