The Lamia, by Herbert James Draper, 1909
Dracula's Daughter, 1936 (starring Gloria Holden)

#amwriting 13K+words on Dark Victorian: MEDUSA 'n I'll be wrassling with the theme of female monster as romantic(???) interest for a bit longer than my 3 week deadline. cha! Heh heh! Not at all shades of Le Fanu's Carmilla ( or the movie, "Dracula's Daughter" 1936. Woo woo! Though I'd like to try that sort of approach, another time). Watch my beta reader point and go: you're doing Belle et Bete! I am not. :-p I'm really trying to stick with scary, goddess'y creature, here.

Progress: I think MEDUSA may end up in the 36K+words range, which is . . . very roughly, 160+pp as a book. I've barely half down of all plot placeholders. It's a matter of getting all pertinent bits writ, then I flesh it all out. Even the end scene may get a truer ending after the 'ending', like with ICE DEMON. We'll see. Medusa herself is fascinating as a psychological and cultural study, which is not quite the same exploration I did with Hecate in SUNDARK, that being more a mythical/religious portrayal. Besides the fact that as a chthonic goddess, she's plain frightening.

THIS PAINTING: is The Lamia, by Herbert James Draper, 1909. And what a mythic tale is she. IF I can ever view it up close, I could confirm that her eyes have pupils like a reptile. A snakeskin is draped around her waist. I'm tempted to try her on in a penny dread. But not as a romantic interest.

Not for me
A Boat Made of Bone (The Chthonic Saga) - Nicole Grotepas

Arc provided by Patchwork Press through Netgalley

What first draw my attention to this book was, i admit, the cover.
And yes, the title.
In fact i was so blinded by those two elements, that a very important detail escaped my notice:

New Adult

Let it be said, that i don't have anything against the New Adult genre, besides the fact that up until this moment, i still haven't read a single book of this category that i've enjoyed!! (1)

And this one started so well!!
Which only makes the writing of this review even  more frustrating!

The author knows how to write. She knows how to create vivid settings, and the characters weren't that bad. At least at the beginning.
The ones that could have climbed out of Nick's Hornby High Fidelity story, those, i could have done without.

Thing is, the only thing that made me watch the movie (yes, i didn't read that Nick Hornby book, the only one i read  was"About a Boy") was that John Cusack was in there.
Yes, i had a big crush on John Cusack since i saw him playing a part of  a misunderstood assassine...

But i digress...today i couldn't care less about a bunch of characters pretending to be cool just because they work in a music shop.
That's not enough for a written story. I need more.
Especially when said characters turn out to be nothing more than :"Oh i've just finished college, and look at this ipad "my dad bought it for me".
O_O

*rushes to netgalley to confirm that had in fact requested a new adult book*

The book starts with Kate our main character (our 24 year old), in the middle of one of her erotic dreams (her very mildly described erotic dreams, let's make that clear) with Will, her dream man.
What is curious about them, is that they've have been together for awhile now. Although that will take them awhile to figure out.

And there's something about their memory: At the beginning it takes them awhile to start remembering one another...
Okay, interesting. I definitely wanted to know where that was going! ;)

So the story is divided into Kate's real life, her job, her colleagues, her rock climbing activities, her bff who wants her to date some guy just because he is cute....(How old are you again?)..and Kate's nights which she spends dreaming with Will.
The thing is, there isn't a strong sense of cohesion between these two realities.
Once she wakes up _ and once she starts remembering Will _ i was expecting that she would start looking for some answers!
Yes, she finds out who...*cough*.i mean, she discovers something about Will, but there's a symbol that seems to be always following them, and she doesn't do nothing to find answers!
She could have done some type of research! Why are they spending time together? Why is it happening to them??
But no. Instead she goes on, like she's living double lifes. No problem. (also the girl passes her nights gallivanting, wouldn't it be natural that she would experience some real sleep deprivation symptoms?)

Then to be true to the new adult genre (or ya), there's an attempt at a love triangle that instead of being a strong plot line, just seems to be there to fill the pages.
There's no chemistry between them!
They share an interest: rock climbing.
And the guy is hot.
Therefore out of Kate's "blond minor league".

There's nothing wrong about a person being insecure about her looks. Hey, that happens all the time!
The problem happens when a reader (moi) starts being thrown with one too many: Oh, he's out of my league! I'm blond, and i have a nice figure, _but i have freckles, and my eyes sort of disappear when i laugh _ my friend says so, all the time, but...can i say once again how much my aspect troubles me?
_____
_____
No.

Please authors, trust your readers to remember the characters aspect  with one, or two descriptions.
Maximum.

So, where was i?
Right, i don't know. You know why?
Because what the story had of interesting, becomes buried beneath pointless dialogues between pointless characters.
All those people on the music shop?
Most of them would have to go. Chop, chop....
Then i couldn't help get the feeling that the author was toying with the idea that Kate had the that sort of appeal that all guys go for (I'm sorry but what was a guy who was almost forty, doing with a bunch of twenty year old kids? Surely we would have some other friends his age? And what's with her "boss" attitude?)

Please! Not that special snowflake syndrome aspect too!

Oh but wait, it isn't only Kate who is a special snowflake.
Ty, the gorgeous/handsome without substance character is also a special snowflake.
Here's Ty's thoughts on kissing:

"It's simply that i just don't kiss just anyone. Not that you are just anyone. See, kissing is an art. It's important. Too many people these days see it as a step towards the next peak, you know, like people who only climb K2 in preparation for Everest _ they don't even enjoy K2, their ultimate goal being something else entirely. No, no, no, they have it all wrong, the kiss _ and climbing k2 _ is a thing unto itself_" he stopped and stared at her, his eyes suddenly alert as though realising he had said to much.

                                                 O_O
Well, my response to that would have to be: I would love to chat but...

So far i still don't know Ty's age...or his religion...
But...honestly??
Well unless he has been raised in a Monastery, this kind of speech will not do.

As you can see by all this, the pace starts to drag, so did my interest...

The final part does get a little more interesting, but without that much needed editing, it becomes clustered with needless dialogues when Kate and Will are basically trying to survive.
STOP TALKING! START RUNNING!

More plot.
More revision.
Less stereotypical actions.
Less forced romance.
Less tstl on Kate's part.
And this could have been an okay story.

(1) Ups, i had forgotten that the book Sea Of Tranquility was New Adult and not Ya.
In that case, i've enjoyed one book in the New Adult genre!! :)

A Boat Made of Bone (The Chthonic Saga) - Nicole Grotepas

Oh boy! *sigh*

"It's simply that i just don't kiss just anyone. Not that you are just anyone. See, kissing is an art. It's important. Well, besides not enough characterization?

I'm so tired of this book!!!

looking forward to what's going to happen next!
A Boat Made of Bone (The Chthonic Saga) - Nicole Grotepas

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for the blog tour. You can find my stop at Donnie Darko Girl

A BOAT MADE OF BONE has the kind of synopsis that sounds too compelling to miss. The plot was original and unique for me with likable characters, and the mystery of why and how Kate has met Will through her dreams kept me turning the pages and involved in the story.

Kate begins having dreams about a man named Will, and in the dreams, they're passionately and madly in love. The more she gets to know him, the more she begins to think about him in her waking hours - to the point where she'd rather be dreaming with him than living her life. She acts like two very different people - when awake she is insecure and overly sensitive yet while dreaming she's confident and happy. I know what it's like to feel insecure, so I don't want to judge her for that. I just wish she could have felt the way she did in her dreams.

Kate's dreams kept me riveted and were beautiful and mysterious; however, when she was awake, a lot happens that doesn't seem to be too important to the story. Some parts could have been cut without taking away from the story. At the same time, I think those parts were meant to keep the truth behind Kate and Will's dilemma mysterious. It's just that some of those scenes were slightly uninteresting to me.

Audra is an awesome best friend and roommate. She's supportive of Kate and cares about her, not to mention she has a great sense of humor. Not always the best advice giver though! :) Halfway through the book, a character named Jill seems to come out of nowhere. When she made her appearance, I looked back through the previous chapters thinking I must have missed her introduction. I didn't realize Kate and Audra had another roommate. I was confused with her sudden appearance. I still think I must have missed something.

Ty's character fell flat for me while Will was complicated yet dreamy (no pun intended, lol). I didn't like it when Ty invites Kate to go rock climbing with him, making it sound like a date, only for her to arrive with him to a large group of his friends, none of whom she has met before. Awkward! I thought that was kind of a douchebag move. And he took forever to even kiss her. She begins wondering if he's even interested in her, and I did, too. I didn't find him interesting and thought Kate could do better. Looks only get you so far, lol.

Will on the other hand made ME as happy as he did Kate! I looked forward to his scenes as much as Kate looked forward to her dreams. I worried he was using her for nefarious reasons, but he seemed so genuine and real I didn't think too much of it. Kate was understanding and loving towards him no matter what he admitted to her, and they communicated well with a level of trust that are building blocks to a successful relationship.

Despite a couple of the issues I have with A BOAT MADE OF BONE, I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series. I wonder what Grotepas has in mind next! :D

Tour & Book Review & Giveaway: A Boat Made of Bone by Nicole Grotepas
A Boat Made of Bone (The Chthonic Saga) - Nicole Grotepas

Publication Date: 13 January 2014
Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Source: AToMR Tours (In exchange for an honest Review)

Add on Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon l Barnes & Noble

Goodreads Synopsis:
Kate Miller has been having recurring dreams about the same man . . . a dead man. Will Hawke, to be exact, a celebrity who died long before Kate had any reason to pay attention to celebrities.

Though the night-world she enjoys with Will is a siren song lulling her towards sleep, the intrigue of Kate's waking world goes up several notches when Ty Watts breezes into her life, a tall, dark stranger with looks that would set a thousand housewives free.

The problem: his smile hides a secret that could be dangerous.

Kate's dreams gnaw at the very idea of what is real. She must negotiate the knife-thin edge of reality vs. dreams, solve the mystery of her nightly rendezvous with Will, and either save him or lose herself forever in the seductively dangerous world he inhabits.

A Boat Made of Bone is a love story that spans worlds, generations, and reaches beyond death into the realm of fantasy.

*This book contains mature themes that may not be suitable for those under 18*

My Review:

This book has a really Interesting concept. I liked the originality and modern tone of the book. I was not sure what direction book was going in for the first half and at times I was a little bored. The last 100 pages were the most exciting and I was happy to see where Nicole took the story.

Characters: 3 /5
Nicole creates great, likable characters. I would have liked to know more about Ty as I felt there were quite a few unanswered questions about him and his past.

Kate - Kate is a sweet and witty character. I enjoyed her realistic take of situations, even if they come across a bit negative from her insecurities. I identified with her quite a bit when it came to the situations she dealt with in real life. I really liked the way Kate would find a way to comfort Will no matter how bad the situation or his appearance was and that she found she could love beyond the physical appearance.

Audra - Audra is your typical best friend in the book. She is funny, observant and I enjoyed her honesty. She was definitely my favourite character in the story.

Ty - Ty is smexy, charming and a likable character. I would have enjoyed reading more about his story.

Will - Will was the most interesting character in this book. I was quite surprised with the path that Nicole chose for him. His role in Kate's life made the book so interesting. I was not quite sure what the ending meant for Will, but it might lead to another book as there were quite a few loose ends for both Will and Kate (and Ty).

I was a bit torn between Ty and Will. Both are beautiful characters and I wanted Kate to save both of them from themselves.

Plot, Pace, Writing style: 3/5
The plot is unique and enjoyable even if the pace is a bit slow. I felt there were quite a few unanswered questions in the story: Will Kate go back and save the others, what was Ty hiding etc.? Maybe this will be answered if there is another book. I found one or two editing errors but they were very minor. At times Nicole drew my attention to things in the story that didn't reappear again, such as when Kate woke up in the room and found a paper which seemed to be some sort of contract.

Cover talk: 4/5
I really liked the cover. It is unique and grabs your attention. It ties in the story line beautifully.

Final Thoughts: An enjoyable and unique read.

My Rating:
My reason for 3 stars is the originality of the plot.

~ Favourite Quotes ~

She couldn't tear her gaze away from him. He was gorgeous. She didn't want to stare, but couldn't help herself. His black hair was styled to be messy, there was a bit of scruff accentuating his stone-carved jaw, and he was flashing a brilliant smile at her like it would solve the energy crisis. He could have been... in ... in an Old Spice commercial.

~

Overhead, the Milky Way was a white gash across the night sky - a sky so dusted with stars she felt like she may be one of them, fallen into darkness and lost in a desert.
~
"Do you believe in God?" She didn't know why she asked it. Maybe because of his reference to God's country. "I don't know. I guess that makes me agnostic," he said. "But when I look at this place, and when I look into your eyes, I believe."~The world was exactly as Kate's mom always said. Great-looking people often had no personality because the world fell to it's knees and worshipped at their beautiful feet, so they never had to struggle to achieve anything.  Struggle - that's what developed character. ~"If you're innocent, then I'm as virtuous as a nun," Ty retorted. "Get out while you can, Kate. i think our boy just confessed to being a woman disguised as a man," Malcolm joked as he slipped off his shoes and ducked into his tent. "Ooh, he's going to wake up with his face covered in black marker if he's not careful," Ty said, turning back to her. "I'm not too worried about it. I have proof you're not a woman," Kate said in a conspiratorial whisper exaggeratedly at him.

"Thank goodness," he said, feigning mock relief.

About the Author
Nicole wrote her first fantasy novel in 7th grade on her mother's old Brother typewriter. It was never finished but it strongly resembled a Dragonlance plot and she's forever wondered what happened to the manuscript and Tonathan--the handsome elven protagonist. After living in Nashville where she worked as an editor, she returned to the Utah desert where she was raised. Nicole now lives near the Wasatch mountains with her husband. She writes and raises her son and three cats full time.
