Mags has settled in Buck's Gap, CA to enjoy a quiet retirement from her civil service job, spending her time solving crossword puzzles and discussing the latest thriller with her mystery book club. While her well-meaning friends try to set her up with wealthy crossword puzzle author Morris Butcher as the perfect match, Mags is content to enjoy the single life. But when she discovers Morris stabbed to death in his kitchen, the investigation uncovers a possible link to a jewel heist that occurred years ago and many of the missing diamonds have never been found. A series of cryptic puzzles could hold the key to the mystery, and Mags is determined to help Chief Rick Moran crack the case.

 

I'm already a big fan of this author, having read most of his Cliff Knowles FBI series, and when I saw that The Cryptic Crossword Caper had combined a realistic police procedural with a cozy mystery, I was intrigued; how well could these two very different genres work together, especially since the author hasn't written any cozy mysteries? Extremely well, as it turns out. By the end of the first chapter, I was hooked and I read most of it in one evening! The cozy mystery blended with the hard-nosed procedural perfectly, with all the cozy elements you'd expect; a light read, a little bit of action, amateur sleuths, a sprinkle of light romance, and a lovable cast of characters. Combining it with Chief Rick Moran's methodical and realistic investigation makes for a riveting, suspenseful story that even Jessica Fletcher would envy.

 

Besides being probably the only book to combine cozy mystery with police procedural, what sets this book apart was that it was so interactive, with several puzzles that the reader can work on their own that, when completed, held several clues to the murder. (Don't worry, if you're not a puzzle fan, the puzzles are "worked out" in the book, so you can still follow along.) I really enjoyed trying my hand at the puzzles and while the cryptic crossword was a bit above my skill set, I had a great time working it and the cryptograms and Sudoku. For me, it added an extra layer to keep me involved and reading (not that the book needed anything more to keep me reading!)

 

The Cryptic Crossword Caper is an excellent read that will appeal to any mystery fan, there's something for everyone. I look forward to reading more adventures with Rick, Mags, and the rest of the charming citizens of Buck's Gap.

 

Indyjski Amazon ma powody do zadowolenia. Dwa lata temu ogłosił, że jest największym sklepem internetowym w Indiach. Mimo to, zmagania z głównym rywalem – Flipkartem – wciąż trwają. Po rezygnacji Flipkarta z rynku e-booków, wygląda na to, że kindelki są obecnie jedynymi, liczącymi się czytnikami na indyjskim rynku. Amazon wciąż inwestuje w swój indyjski oddział. Widać to także na miejscu sklepach z elektroniką oraz księgarniach. Odwiedziłem kilka z nich, żadne nie oferują czytników innych niż Kindle.

Konsekwencje braku konkurencji wydają się być dość oczywiste. I nie jest to dobra wiadomość dla czytelników w Indiach. Może to też być przestroga dla innych rynków. Wystarczy porównać postępowanie Amazonu na rynku indyjskim i europejskim (w szczególności niemieckim). Na przykład niemiecki oddział organizuje raz po raz promocje cenowe, podczas gdy pozostałe europejskie oddziały miewają je rzadziej. Jednym z głównych powodów takiego postępowania jest bardzo wymagająca niemiecka konkurencja w postaci czytników Tolino.

A w Indiach? Przeceny kindelków bywają jeszcze rzadziej. Gdzie jak gdzie, ale nie brakuje tam okazji do świętowania, tudzież organizowania okolicznościowych akcji promocyjnych. Ceny na co dzień również nie powalają na kolana... Szczególnie, gdy porównamy ofertę Amazonu indyjskiego z niemieckim.

Różnica 59 EUR w cenie Kindle Oasis między rynkiem niemieckim i indyjskim robi wrażenie. Trudno mi to wyjaśnić inaczej niż brakiem konkurencji w Indiach.

Trudno mi powiedzieć, na ile czytniki książek są popularne w Indiach. Przy takich cenach można się spodziewać, że jest to raczej gadżet. Z rozmów z młodszym pokoleniem wyłania się taki obraz, że słowo „kindle” jest dla Indusów synonimem czytnika książek. W metrze czy miejskich autobusach, podróżni masowo korzystają ze smartfonów. W tym roku nie widziałem nikogo, kto by na przykład czytał papierową gazetę lub książkę (inną niż podręcznik).

Podsumowanie

Dominacja czytników Kindle nie wychodzi na dobre indyjskim czytelnikom. Nie twierdzę, że wyższe ceny czytników w indyjskim Amazonie, to wyłącznie efekt monopolu. Ale taki związek wydaje się dość oczywisty. Mam więc nieśmiałe życzenia, żeby Tolino w Niemczech miało się jak najlepiej i obsługujący nas amazon.de czuł nieustannie jego oddech na karku :)

Z jednej strony, to dobrze, że na rynku dominują porządne czytniki. Z drugiej, nie zazdroszczę Indusom poziomu cen kindelków przeznaczonych na tamtejszy rynek.

This is either a mystery with some added crosswords, or a small book of crosswords, with an accompanying mystery, depending on your point of view. It probably serves the crossword puzzler better than the mystery buff.

There are six crosswords, not cryptic; the mystery is set in small-town eastern U.S. The mystery itself is passable, and does not depend on the reader completing the crosswords for its solution, though a rather awkwardly introduced plot device ensures that the female protagonist, a crossword maker named Belle, gets her principal insights from said crosswords.

For a work that's so self-congratulatory about its use of a wide variety of words, there are some irritating slips of diction in the story, and likewise some slips or downright errors in the crossword clues. Examples of the former: "free reign"; "a might touchy".  An example of the latter: "assai" as the solution of "musically quick". ("Assai" means "very". The puzzle-maker probably saw it in the phrase allegro assai, which means very quick - but "assai" by itself as a solution is a nonsense).

I'm not a fan of crosswords that are neither cryptic nor soluble by having a large but modern vocabulary without knowledge of obscure words not in use outside of crossword dictionaries. So I'm probably not the target audience for this volume. In the end, I'm probably being too severe because the work is clearly simply a pass-time. For my money, it was a mediocre one.

The flashbacks were initially difficult to follow. The cast of characters are what saved this book! They are idiosyncratic, opinionated & downright funny at times. They made me want the life of the Agency to receive resuscitation.

This book isn’t for me. It is the noir aspect that doesn’t do it for me.   I’m not a fan of noir. It’s the female characters that usually make me cave. I will say that I love the use of words and names. The concept is really interesting. If you like noir and word play, you should enjoy this.
