I'm abandoning this one.

The writing and worldbuilding are very good.

The story and the main character are just not for me at this time.  Too dark.

Well, so far, this is well written with potentially interesting worldbuilding.  Anyone else read this seris?

It's rather grim and violent with a main character who says he's done stuff like bleeding out black Rams as sacrifices, lines of cocaine, and sees detailed murders.

I may switch, but nothing on the shelf called for Bookshelf BINGO was really grabbing me.

I sympathize with Eric Carter based on what his life seems to be, but I don't like him yet and am not invested in his story.  I like finding a new series and I like the writing style--that's why on the fence about DNF or continue.

It is making me want to go buy some Johnny Walker Black (no liquor sales here on Sundays though).  I really don't need any because well stocked with bourbon for Derby ... just not Johnny Walker Black.

I will DNF if the book starts doing detailed animal sacrifice (at least the main character says it's too extreme for him to nail a dead cat to the window to ward off the haunts -- if that changes and any pets are harmed, I'm out).

New to me author and first in series.  Some reviewers say remniscient of Harry Dresden (I can take it or leave it when it comes to Dresden Files so we'll see).

I've said this before, I'm not a huge fan of the paranormal horror novel, but this series came recommended by one of my favourite authors, so I figured, what the hell, give it a try. 

And I enjoyed it!

I liked the main character - the book is written in the first person POV - Eric Carter, who can talk to dead people and can wield some magic. He's what they call a necromancer. His voice is easy to read and he has a sense of humour that hit me in my sweet spot - seasoned with a bit of sarcasm. He's basically a good guy, but he has issues, some of which he actually confronts in this first book of the series.  And he likes to dress for the occasion - suit and tie.  *LOL*

  The setting is contemporary Los Angeles and it abounds in lots of paranormal denizens.  Eric has friends there, friends he hasn't really spoken with in 15 years.  I liked his friends.  He also has enemies.  They are good evil enemies.  Ghosts and monsters and gods. And when you make a deal with the devil, so to speak, ... well, it's a deal. 

Now, there's a lot of blood and gore.  Things, living and dead, exploding and melting and destroying and causing mayhem.  And lots of blood and gore.  Usually it turns me off, but I was willing to go with it this time.

So the book has a paranormal noire detective type feel and noire detective hits a lot of my sweet spots - the paranormal I can take or leave.  But this was good. I enjoyed it and I'll be reading the next one.

Nooooooooooo this can’t be the ending of the series can it???!!! I’ve taken a liking to Eric Carter. He’s still has his anti hero jerk side, but in this book, he’s mellowed out quite a bit (or if you really think about it, he grew up and stopped being filled with rage.)

Sad to say, I noticed Gabriela takes an absence in this one. Which is too bad because I rather liked her presence. She was a perfect side fighting partner with Eric. Alas perhaps later I hope?

I also liked the complete 360 Tabatha did. She’s not what you thought she was and now that things are getting pretty serious she’s really down to earth and idealistic. Which I rather started to like about her. She’s also started to grow more of a backbone and talking back to Eric a bit more. I’m not sure if I really like them as a couple though. I think it just seems like Eric is so much of a lone wolf you don’t see him with anyone romantically. Who knows though, as Eric does take a personality change though.

Eric’s journey in this book has a more serious undertone and not a high flying adventure like the first too ones. This one, well he’s just about at the end of his rope and he’s had it with being the pawn in the games of the Gods. Plus, well he’s turning to jade so that can’t be comfortable can it? So his journey into the underworld is pretty serious at this point. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the underworld. I can’t get over the “Mad Max” cars (because that’s the first thing I thought when I read the description!). I thought it was well done and what an underworld really should be.

The ending was good. It did tie up various loose ends and it seems like the series stops there. I did hear however that this is not the end, there’s going to be more Eric Carter novels so I’d like to know who he’ll square up against now. It’s nice that he closes everything that’s been following him all throughout the first three books so I think he’s ready for another set of getting beaten up to a pulp :D more demons please!!!!
