THE ENVOY: THE EPIC RESCUE OF THE LAST JEWS OF EUROPE IN THE DESPEARTE CLOSING MONTHS OF WORLD WAR II by Alex Kershaw
The Envoy: The Epic Rescue of the Last Jews of Europe in the Desperate Closing Months of World War II - Alex Kershaw
I have had this book for a long time.  I thought it was a novel.  I was surprised.  It is history and what a read!  I have heard of Raoul Wallenberg but more as an afterthought.  He was no afterthought.  He was brave and willing to risk his life to save Hungarian Jews towards the end of WWII.  THE ENVOY tells the story of what he and other diplomats from neutral countries did to help save as many people as they could.  This book gives all the sides from the Nazi side to the Jewish side to the Hungarian Arrow Cross side to the Soviet side.

I was sickened by Eichmann and his words and actions.  I felt sorrow for those who could not be saved.  I also felt hope for those who were saved and survived the war.  I felt anger for the Wallenberg family and their not being able to get the truth from the Soviets and for the lack of compassion shown by the Swedish diplomatic corps.  Raoul was a good man who deserves his story told and his family deserves to know what really happened to him.

Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944
Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944 - Aranka Siegal I've been putting off writing this review because I've been debating on whether to rate it a 2 or a 3. I had thought I had settled on a 3 until I wrote my review and realized that a 2 more accurately portrays my feelings.

I honestly was disappointed in, first, the execution of the story. I felt like it was bogged down with sooo many extraneous, and very unnecessary details (i.e. we learn all about when one of the characters start their period) yet its missing a lot of, what I thought, are the more important parts of their story (i.e. we aren't told anything about their time in Auschwitz?)

It left me wishing that the book had a good editor and wondering if it was dumbed down because it's meant to be a kids story or because certain periods of time were too difficult for the author to rehash??

I also felt like this story was very flat. Even though I do have sympathy for what they went through and endured, I felt like this book did nothing to envoke those emotions from me.

My son and I read this book together as one of his required 6th grade, Newberry Award and Honor reading books and he didn't enjoy it very much either. It's a difficult book to read, especially for kids, with the Hungarian names and the way the story is written. It's really not a good book to introduce your children to the German occupation and Holocaust. I want my son to really understand what happened and feel something when he learns about the Holocaust and this book just didn't do that for either of us.

Elizabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary
Elizabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary - George P. Upton 3.5 stars
image
Having visited Hungry lately I was intrigued by Elisabeth(also known as Sisi) Empress consort of Austria-Queen of Hungary 1837 - 1898 (assassinated).

The wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, Elizabeth was born into Bavarian royalty and enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying at the early age of 16. She led an interesting and somewhat sad life and I wanted to learn more about Sisi as she was so loved by the Hungarian people.

I had some difficulty getting a book on kindle that was factual as opposed to fiction but I happened to come accross this short book by George P Upton and felt at 70 pages it might give me an insight into Sisi's life. It did present the facts and was just what I was looking for.

I did enjoy reading and learning about this beautiful and intriguing lady and am glad to say finished it wanting more. I have a few other books lined up which may give me a more comprehensive insight into her life and I am really looking forward to those.
