A Fistful of Fire (Illuminant Enforcer #2) by Rebecca Chastain
A Fistful of Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Madison Fox, Illuminant Enforcer Book 2) - Rebecca Chastain

Madison Fox survived her first week as California’s newest illuminant enforcer, defending her region against imps, vervet, hounds, and one lascivious demon. If her grumpy boss, Mr. Pitt, was impressed, he hasn’t told Madison. In fact, there’s a lot her boss has been closemouthed about, including the dark secret haunting his past.

But Madison’s problems are just igniting. Neighboring regions report an uncharacteristic flare-up of evil, fire-breathing salamanders blaze unchecked across the city, and Black Friday looms. Trapped doing cleanup amid mobs of holiday shoppers, Madison watches from the sidelines as dubious allies insinuate themselves in her region.

As suspicions kindle and the mysterious evil gains strength, Madison must determine who she can trust—and whose rules to follow—before her region and career go up in flames.

Sizzling with adventure and sparking with magic, A FISTFUL OF FIRE is fused with Madison Fox’s trademark blend of humor and ass-kicking action.

my though

This book starts out a bit slow. Much like the first one with Madison being Madison but things pick up fast after a few chapters. Madison learn quite a lot in this book and does a lot of growing up. Personal and in her new job. She gets used to her still new surroundings much better and adjust much better than the last book, I thought. She also seemed less annoying in this book. We learn about some more new magical creatures along with Madison. We also get to meet some new people and learn new things. This book contains quite the number of twists and turns that keep you engaged in the book and guessing. While I like Niko, I really thing Dr. Love is better fit for her. He balances her out very nicely. But I’m still a huge fan of Niko. We shall see how it all turns out. Overall I enjoyed this book, even bit more than the first one. It still has plenty of humor, action and suspense. If you are fan if Urban Fantasy you should give this series a try. I rate this book 4 ★

Madison Fox just learned that her ability to see souls is more than a sight: It’s a weapon for fighting evil. The only problem is she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing.

On the positive side, her money problems are over, she’s possibly discovered her purpose in life, and her coworker is smoking hot. On the negative side, evil creatures now actively hunt her, and deadly experiences are becoming the norm.

When she thinks it couldn’t get worse, a powerful evil sets up shop at a local hotel’s video game convention, and it’s got its eye on more than the gaming geeks: it is hungry for Madison’s soul. Madison needs to become an expert illuminant enforcer overnight to save her job, her region . . . and her life.

3 ½ ★

This a nice start to a new series.

We meet Madison just as she finds out that the ability to see souls is more than she thought and that she is part of the supernatural community that she has no idea excised.

She starts a job as an Illuminant Enforcer, which basically is there to protect the world for all evil being. Since she is pretty knew to the supernatural works she has all kind of things to learn . Some things she learns faster than other as she is thrown in to the pool, not knowing how to swim basically.

I really liked Madison, when we first meet her she is a just a girl trying make ends meet and struggling with money or to hold a job. She is feisty and snarky and sarcasm is her weapon of choice. She also has love for her cat, a lot of it. And she kind of lusts after the vet, Dr. Love <-- no joke.

Once she gets thrown into the job, she adopts rather fast or at least the thought of it. She is trying to best and only with a few hours of training and some 101 on catching the evil beings gets her butt kicked more than once and quite good sometimes.

With being so new to the job and the world she didn’t know excited, she gets help from and Illuminant Enforcer a district over and he is quite the looker. And she can’t help herself drooling over him.

I really enjoyed this book for the most part. It was exciting, and suspenseful and kept me wanting for more. There was just a tiny things I disliked.

While I mainly liked Madison, she also started to get on my nerves half way through the book. She seemed pretty inpatient and also seemed like she had to proof something to herself more than others.

For example, she only at this for a day or so, so when things didn’t go well, she took it rather hard and whined way too much over it. Duh, she only just learned about everything and can’t know about everything yet. But that same goes, for when she got something right, she got over confident and with that just ended up in danger. She had quite the few “to stupid to live moments “

But overall it was good read and a good start to a new series.

I rate it at 3 ½ ★
