The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors
The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors - Drew Daywalt,Adam Rex
I thought this might be a cute book to share with some classes when I teach so that is why I picked it up at the library. This children’s book is oversized and the illustrations are bright and colorful so I was very pleased to see this. I really enjoyed all the different font types and sizes that were used throughout the novel as I thought it made the novel come to life and the sharp contrasting colors on the pages, the book popped!

Unfortunately, there was one instance in this novel that makes me hesitate to share it with some classes. This might not be a big deal to some but as an instructor, it was to me. It was when rock met apricot and he said, “You sir, look like a fuzzy butt.” The word, butt shocked me. I know some children will laugh when you read it and some children will say, “butt, it says butt. That’s a bad word.” So, what do you do? Do you change the word out, skip that part, forget the whole book or read it and see what happens? There is name calling in this novel as one person tries to gain control in the situation. It became a pattern as they fight for control and I feel that this is a topic that cannot be looked over. I know its supposed to be all fun and games but do the kids that you are reading it to, see it that way.

I thought the story itself was cute and entertaining and I think many children will like the story. The story is about power, who is the most powerful one of all. When we play the game rock, scissor, paper we are looking for a winner, who has the power, who will be the leader. There are teachable moments in the story, areas that could be talked about further after the story is over or while it is being read. I liked how the story ended.

The Bottle Stopper (The Paper Duchess #1)
The Bottle Stopper (The Paper Duchess Book 1) - Angeline Trevena

An excellent story and a creative world dreamed up by author Trevena. The reader can't help but empathize with the main character, Maeve, and her dire circumstances dealing with her evil Uncle Lou. Her tribulations are many, but so is her quick thinking. Maeve takes the cruelest acts against her and tries in her way to make them right. Revenge, but in a unique and twisted way. The descriptions of the people she meets, her friend, and the places she visits are deeply cultivated within the rich world that the author ables us to see and feel. The stairs leading up to a better place may not be the stairway to heaven after all. The winding plot gets thicker, as more revelations push Maeve into drastic situations requiring extreme measures. There is a lot of bad happening in this dystopian world, not only for Maeve. Still, there is hope, and the twist, in the end, will give hope. It also leads well into the next story. You'll want to pick up the next in the series. Well written and provoking book, I recommend you read the series.

Review: Paper Girls Vol 3
Paper Girls Volume 3 - Brian K Vaughan

Not as good as previous volumes, but it would be hard to keep up the same amazing, dynamite good times forever. And this issue is bad times all around, from the plight of the character in the local timeline, to the ill fated time traveler they meet along the way, bad things happen to every woman in this volume.

And can we just stop publishing anything men have to say about women getting their periods? Like, forever? In general, it hasn't bothered me that all of the creative team on this book is men, but for that specific subplot, I do not have enough eye rolling to convey my disappointment.

Over at goodreads, karen wrote an extremely accurate response to reading this, and included some panels. Including a screen shot of one of the last pages, which left me super interested in the next volume even if I didn't love this.
