Raven, a college girl from Michigan, came to the jungles of Cameroon searching for closure. Falling for Jospin, a handsome, charismatic hunter with dark secrets of his own, was never part of the plan.

Excerpt:

Mr. Tondjii’s quarters are upstairs,” Clovis says, nodding to the staircase. “The remaining rooms belong to me and the other pack members who live here.”

“Which one is mine?” I ask.

Deep laughter erupts behind me. I turn to see a pack member—dreads like Clovis’s, but

shorter—eyeing me.

You aren’t staying in Clovis’s room?” he asks.

Damn it. I should have assumed that I’d be staying with Clovis, since we’re supposedly

together.

I don’t want to offend anyone,” I say, going for polite.

What is this, brother?” the guy asks, looking at Clovis. “She’s a spy who betrayed the

habitat and faced the possibility of being executed by our pack, and now she’s worried about offending someone?” He grins.

Brother?

The other pack members disperse, leaving me alone with Clovis and this guy who is maybe Clovis’s brother.

Raven,” Clovis says, drawing my eyes to his face. “Meet Mattius, my brother.”

I look over at Mattius and try to keep my expression warm, though I wish he would stop staring at me with those all-too-knowing eyes. Mattius looks at me as if he doesn’t believe me. I won’t let him be my demise.

Hello, Mattius,” I say, inching closer to Clovis, turning my attention back to him. “If no one cares, I’d much rather stay with you.” I trail a finger down Clovis’s arm for emphasis, soft and flirty.

You will stay with me always,” Clovis says, wrapping an arm around me.

I don’t trust Mattius, who is still staring. I’m too close to losing it all right here in this hallway, because I wish Jospin, not Clovis, was holding me. I miss Jospin, and the ache of missing him is so strong that it promises to rip me open. I wish I had never gotten sucked into this trap. But there’s nothing I can do about that now. So I lean in to Clovis and relax, yawn like I’m tired.

Can I see our room, then?” I ask.

Sure,” Clovis replies, casting Mattius a final look. “Later, brother.”

Mattius nods, watching me for a second more.

I force myself to smile. Give a little wave as he walks away.

I will lie to their faces, I vow, and somehow, some way, at whatever cost, I will bring this place down.

Sock Poacher and the Shower Thief: Tall Tales of Hooper's Town 1
Sock Poacher and the Shower Thief: Tall Tales of Hooper's Town 1 - Freddy MacKay,Erika O. Williams 4.5 Stars ~ Review by Teresa

I found the Sock Poacher and the Shower Thief charming! Despite starting out on a misunderstanding, this is a couple that do well together :)

I thought the author did a good job. You got a good, clear picture of both Namid and Dusty, as well as all the other cast of quirky characters. The book was light in tone, despite a few tragedies happening, which kept it from being bogged down with angst. The mystery wasn’t as well fleshed out, but it didn’t really matter. The rest of the story, especially the scenes that led to the title, were well done.

It was quirky, fun and a little over the top; from the meddling grandmothers to the sheriff, everyone’s love was evident. I have to mention the cats and the Strip and Run 5 K (I’ll let your imaginations go with that one) as well! They were a whole other layer of crazy in this little town.

It made Sock Poacher and the Shower Thief a real comfort read.

Poacher's Fall
Poacher's Fall - J.L. Merrow 4 Stars

I enjoy historical novels for their sense of place and calmer pace, especially if I can curl up before a fireplace and lose myself in another time and place. I found “Poacher’s Fall” with its rich description and fully developed characters perfect for doing so. It is a lovely, period read.

After the death of his father, and assuming the care of his mother and his siblings, Danny Costessey is carrying on the family business of poaching one frigid, snowy night before Christmas. He climbs a tree for a handful of mistletoe to gift to his mom and falls, knocking himself unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in an elegantly appointed room, in a warm bed under the roof of a man on whose land he is a tenant and from whom he was poaching rabbits. He is surprised by his host’s generosity and he is instantly attracted to his good looks and compassionate nature.

Aristocratic Philip Luccombe, owner of the English manor home, is deep in mourning for his lover, Robert, who has died of Spanish flu after World War I. Philip’s servants embrace who he is and they fiercely protect his privacy as he deals with the crippling grief over the loss of his friend and lover. Having Danny in his home and dealing with his attraction to his robust tenant, forces Philip to live in the present. Although the men are from different classes and educational backgrounds, personable Danny intrigues Philip on every level and both are aware of their mutual attraction. As their friendship grows, they discover common ground in a love of family, each other and, something I sincerely appreciate, a love of the works of Charles Dickens.

J. L. Merrow’s writing is meticulous and sensuous. She gives us the world building and the context to understand the two main characters, their backgrounds and their shared history as Danny juggles responsibility for family and Phillip grapples with loss and the rebirth of hope. Through some lovely dialogue, we experience Danny and Phillip’s feelings, as their interest becomes affection and then love.

This is a tender story that launches Danny and Phillip’s story and it is the lead-in to the next book, “Keeper’s Pledge.” I can not wait for the rest of the story.

Poacher's Fall - J.L. Merrow This was quite a lovely little historical Christmas story. I loved the rough/sweet/bold character of Danny and the setting of the manor. I dinged it one star just because it felt like it could have been longer.
