Review ~ Meh again
Takedown Twenty - Janet Evanovich

3.5

Book source ~ Library

Stephanie Plum is a half-assed bounty hunter with the hots for two guys and has a best friend who is crazy. She has the paperwork needed to catch Salvatore Sunucchi for skipping out on his court date, but the problem is everyone loves Uncle Sunny and no one wants to tell her where he’s hanging his hat these days. Oh, everyone knows he’s a mob boss and he murdered someone, but hey, he’s so charming he doesn’t deserve to go to prison. While Stephanie tries to run down Sunny and avoid Sunny’s henchmen she’s helping hot security guy Ranger to solve the murders of several old ladies who were strangled and left in dumpsters. Hot cop guy Morelli says it’s not his case, but he’s helping out some, too. Because why not?

Even though I read book 25 just a few weeks ago, I hadn’t realized I’d somehow skipped this one. I mean, it’s understandable. They all run together like onelongassbook. This one is actually a bit better than the others, but not by much. Only because Ranger is in it a lot and Stephanie screws up even more than usual and actually gets hurt. Does it knock some sense into her? Not really. But I like how it twists a bit more than usual. In any case, this book is marshmallow fluff. It’s no good for you, but it’s pretty tasty in small doses. Light entertainment is all you get out of this one. As usual.

Same ol', same ol'
Tricky Twenty-Two - Janet Evanovich

*Book source ~ Library

Stephanie Plum may not be a bounty hunter extraordinaire, but she does tend to get the job done one way or another. When she gets an FTA named Ken *Gobbles* Globovic, college student and member of the worst fraternity house at Kirkman College, she figures the job  will be a piece of cake. She should have known better.

The formula hasn’t changed for this book. Stephanie gets into her usual troubles, Lula is still funny and wacky, Vinnie is still a jerk, Morelli is an asshole and Ranger is hot. After 22 books you’d think Stephanie would have grown a bit as a character, but she’s still as she was in the beginning. Getting kinda ridiculous really. I also don’t know what she sees in Morelli other than her family would find him as an acceptable husband for her. Wow. Quite the reason to marry. If they ever do. I hope they don’t. I can’t stand him. I would choose Ranger every day of the year over Morelli. Anyway, if you’ve read the other books in the series there won’t be any surprises in this one. It’s a nice piece of entertaining fluff that doesn’t tax your brain and will occasionally make you smile. Plus, Ranger. Mmmmm…

NetGalley Review
Red Rising - Pierce Brown

*Book source ~ NetGalley

Darrow is a Red, mining on Mars for helium-3, the stuff needed for terraforming the planet. Earth is dying and humans need other worlds to live, so Darrow and his people work and sacrifice in order to achieve this dream for future generations. Except it’s all been a lie. The Reds are only slave labor so the Golds and other colors can live in luxury. Mars has already been colonized, built on the backs of Darrow’s people and it’s been going on for generations. A resistance called the Sons of Ares has recruited Darrow to infiltrate the Golds and bring them down from the inside. Does Darrow have the right stuff?

I have no idea if Darrow has the right stuff because I gave up on this book at 25%. Show, show, show, blah, blah, blah. It’s dreadfully boring and then when I thought it might start to get interesting it instead became ridiculous. I get that this is the future and sci-fi and all that jazz, but the shit Darrow goes through at the Carver’s is not even a tiny bit believable. My mind boggles at the alterations and stolen body parts to make it so. And you’re telling me he’ll pass inspection?! I’m done. Moving on.

A Most Devilish Rogue
A Most Devilish Rogue - Ashlyn Macnamara

*Book source ~ NetGalley

Isabelle Mears made a bad decision during her come out season and ended up pregnant by a dandy who disappeared right after deflowering her. Six years later, after being disowned by her family, she’s living in backwater Kent with her son Jack when George Upperton rescues Jack from the ocean. George is smitten with Isabelle, but she’s rightly wary of any man, most especially one of the ton.

George has lived up to his father’s expectations of gambling, women and booze, but he’s not happy. With a mother hounding him to marry and a pregnant mistress hounding him for blunt George runs to his friend’s house party in Kent where he meets Isabelle. Running away from his problems solved nothing and now he can’t get the fallen Isabelle out of his mind. When Jack is kidnapped he throws himself into the search thus spending a large amount of time with Isabelle. Will George and Isabelle get their happily ever after? Or are they doomed?

This story started out pretty good, but was soon bogged down with long boring passages and contrived conflict. George and Isabelle aren’t very interesting, the kidnapping was just plain stupid and George is a moron. Also, Jack is gone and Isabelle spends the time either dithering or screwing George. Wow. Some mom she is. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters in this book. I almost DNF’d it, but hoped it would get better. Nope. I won’t be carrying on with this series.
