Bone Parish, Vol. 1 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, and Alex Guimaraes
Bone Parish, Vol. 1 - Cullen Bunn,Jonas Scharf,Alex Guimaraes

This is a great start to a horror series. A family in New Orleans has developed a new hallucinogen, ash, that is so lucid, so real, that demand for it keeps skyrocketing - even if it is made from the dead. This business is becoming so profitable its caught the attention of cartels in New York and elsewhere that might soon stop asking for a share in the business, but take it all. There's also the other small problem that horrifying side effects have emerged...

These opening issues of 'Bone Parish' set up a crime family dynamic with plenty of secrets and regrets. There isn't a lot of space for characterization, I know that that has to come in pieces in this format, but its frustrating to have information teased out over such a long period of time. This has a lot of promise, I'll keep my eyes open.

The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection Berlin
The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection Berlin... The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection Berlin - Melanie Franke,Robert McInnes,Silke Krohn,Dieter Scholz

This small book is intended as an affordable (for an art book) souvenir of a visit to the museum housing the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection. It reproduces "highlights" of the Collection with a short commentary on each piece. Said Collection was a private collection of mainly Surrealist and related works, now held by a Foundation dedicated to making the art accessible to the public.

The two most notable results of my visit were discovery of Piranesi and for the firsst time appreciating works by Paul Klee. This book has two reproductions by the former and several by the latter. There's a lot of other interesting work, too, though.

Did you know Victor Hugo did graphic art? He has two pieces reproduced here.

One of Hans Bellmer's Doll pictures, an exceptionally creepy image, to me at least, is also reproduced. See it here:

This collection focuses on Surrealism, its antecedents and closely related schools.

In terms of individual artists, my great discovery during my Berlin visit was Piranesi. Two of his Imaginary Prisons/Prisons of the Imagination (the Italian is open to either interpretation) images are reproduced here but there's a roomful in the museum. They are my strongest memories of my time there.
