REVIEW
In this book we get additions in a oh so great way. Jack and Riley want to add to their family. Haley needs a sibling right? So they look into all their options as a gay married couple. In Texas nothing is simple. Then add into the mix a small boy with autism and perhaps other issues?
I really enjoyed this story.

This book was read via Kindle Unlimited

It's time to revisit an old favorite...
Texas Family - RJ Scott

It’s been four years since I read this book and I have to admit in my reading experience I’ve found that sometimes when there’s a large gap of time between originally reading a book and when I re-read it or in this case listen to the audio book it doesn’t always go well, but I’m happy to say that was not the case with this book…If anything, I enjoyed the audio book just a little bit more than I enjoyed this story the first time around.

I’ve really enjoyed reading all of R. J. Scott’s Texas series and having the opportunity to revisit these characters in audio book format has been a treat, so much so that I’m looking forward to treating my self to the rest of this series in the near future.

Sean Crisden is the narrator for this title as well as previous titles and I have to admit when it comes to books involving cowboys he’s one of my favorites. I love his deep, gravelly, easy drawl along with the fact that he consistently ticks all my basic audio narrator boxes with his consistent, unique and expressive voices.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with this series I strongly recommend starting at the first book and reading them in order. Jack and Riley are the main characters in this series and their story starts back in the first book…The Heart of Texas.

Jack and Riley started as an enemies to lovers story in book one and each successive story follows them as their relationship grows and here in the fourth book Riley and Jack have decided it’s time for their family to grow and have decided that surrogacy is how they want this to happen and Jack will be the father. But as can often be the case plans go astray and things may not end up the way they intended but both men are quick to realize that while they didn’t get what they’d signed up for…they were getting the family they wanted.

In spite of all their advantages, this isn’t a story that’s so perfect it makes me feel like I’m going to sink into a diabetic coma. Jack and Riley still have the stress of day to day life and the problems it brings to deal with…running a horse ranch, managing an ethical oil exploration company, dealing with relationship struggles both theirs and their families, making compromises and finding solutions.

‘Texas Family’ is a nice slice of life look at what’s happening in the world of Jack, Riley and their family. It was also a chance to see them building the life together that they’d started in ‘Texas Family’ and continued to work towards in ‘Texas Winter’ and then in ‘Texas Heat’. I love this series, these characters the lack of angst and extreme drama, no great mystery to solve…just the day to day life of two people in love building a life together that would see their dream of family become reality.

There are a few authors whose books are comfort food for me…for my brain, my heart and my soul. I know the kind of story I’m going to get and it’s one that I can lose myself in and enjoy. They’re my go to authors when I’ve been left with too many jagged edges by life and/or by emotionally draining books. R. J. Scott is one of those authors and her Texas series are among those books.

Texas Family (Texas #4) by R.J. Scott
Texas Family - RJ Scott
Texas Family, as the name suggests, is all about family. Jack and Riley's growing family to be precise. Now, maybe it's because I turned into full-throttle weeping bucket when I had children of my of own, maybe it's just because I'm sappy, but this book hit me right in the feels! There is so much for Jack and Riley to consider, and put into place; legal loopholes to jump through; excitement, terror, panic, and peace. I can relate one hundred per cent to all of it. OK, so maybe not all of it as I'm not a gay man, but I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from.

Just as well written as I would expect from R.J. Scott, this is a book that I lost myself in. I thoroughly enjoyed every word, and yes, I needed the kleenex too! Absolutely brilliant.

* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review.*

A Texas Soldier's Family (Texas Legacies: The Lockharts)
A Texas Soldier's Family (Texas Legacies... A Texas Soldier's Family (Texas Legacies: The Lockharts) - Cathy Gillen Thacker 3 stars

This didn't really hold my attention, and the accounting inadequacies drove me nuts. So did all the baby stuff. Feeding, changing diapers, burping - yuck. Not something I want to read about in such detail. Yuck

#24in48 Readathon Reading List
Sleigh Bells in the Snow - Sarah Morgan
Snowbound with the CEO - Shannon Stacey
Harlequin Holiday Collection: Four Classic Seasonal Novellas - Marta Perry,Debra Webb,Merline Lovelace,Leslie Kelly
Her Holiday Family (Texas Grooms (Love Inspired Historical)) - Winnie Griggs

My reading list for this weekend's read-a-thon has a few themes:

Christmas in July

Harlequin-poolza

New to Me Authors

Giving Contemporary Romance A Chance Yet Again

1. Sleigh Bells in the Snow by Sarah Morgan (trade paperback)

I have been wanting to try Sarah Morgan's books since I heard her interview with Sarah Wendell on the Smart Podcast, Trashy Books podcast. Maybe Morgan can help renew my interest in contemporary romance (fingers crossed). I am reading a print version with the UK cover since I picked it up at a charity shop on base. I like the UK version better (glitter!) than the US one (shown here). One final reason for picking this book was that I could read it while my NOOK and my phone recharges.

2. Snowbound with the CEO by Shannon Stacey (ebook)

Another author I have been wanting to try out, as her books are constantly recommended. I picked up this book as part of a 3 book bundle that was on sale last December. Another set of fingers crossed that I can find a contemporary romance author to read.

3. Harlequin Holiday Collection (Anthology) by Various Authors (ebook)

All new to me authors in a handy anthology. I wanted a short story collection in my list so that I can easily put down the book when the kids need me and not lose momentum in the story. Toes crossed that this leads me to new contemporary romance books.

4. Her Holiday Family (Texas Grooms) by Winnie Griggs (ebook)

Just in case contemporary romance fails me (as usual), I am keeping this inspirational historical romance as a designated hitter. I have enjoyed Griggs' work in the past; she does the religious aspects of inspirational romance with a light but realistic touch. Since I tend to tear up at her HEAs, this one won't be read in public.

If in the strange circumstance of actually getting through these books, I will just continue with the other books in the Shannon Stacey box set. Considering the kids and I have a long bus ride to Brighton and back on Sunday, I may actually get more than my average two books read in this read-a-thon. I'll do a wrap up post on Monday, but probably won't update during the read-a-thon.
