What is a Verb?
To Root, to Toot, to Parachute: What is a Verb?: What Is a Verb? (Words are CATegorical) - Brian Cleary,Jenya Prosmitsky

This is an amazing set of books to use in the classroom to introduce different parts of a sentence to your class! To Root, To Toot, To Parachute teaches your students about verbs in a fun way as well as some examples of them. After reading these books, I would have my students take the book they are working on and use highlighter tape to identify what verbs the author is using in that book. I would then have them compile a list of verbs they would be able to use in their future writing and have a class share time to help grow that resource for the students.

Where the Wild Things Are
Where The Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak

Where the Wild Things are is on a AD740L Lexile reading level (2nd grade reading level). In this story, a trouble-making boy is sent to bed without any supper. This young boy goes on adventure of his own, in his very own bed room. An activity that can go along with this book, is an action word rumpus. Students take turns being the king or queen. When the king or queen says an action word, the whole class performs the action. When the king or queen orders the class to be still, then they must freeze.

It's Hard To Be a Verb! - Julia Cook,Carrie Hartman

I would use this lesson in about verbs and being active. This book can double as a book about verbs and not being able to stay still. The activity I would do for I Love Verbs is a writing prompt. The students will be challenged to  use a certain amount of verbs in a story they write. Another idea for this book is to read sentences with students and instruct them to highlight or circle the verb in the sentence. As a closing activity I will get the students to demonstrate what a verb is at their desk, for example jump up in down or run in place.

On Words: My Neruda

Verbo

Voy a arrugar esta palabra,
voy a torcerla ,
sí,
es demasiado lisa,
es como si un gran perro o un gran río
le hubiera repasado lengua o agua
durante muchos años.

Quiero que en la palabra
se vea la aspereza,
la sal ferruginosa
la fuerza desdentada
de la tierra,
la sangre
de los que hablaron y de los que no hablaron.

Quiero ver la sed
adentro de las sílabas:
quiero tocar el fuego
en el sonido:
quiero sentir la oscuridad
del grito. Quiero
palabras ásperas
como piedras vírgenes.
