Suicide Forest
Suicide Forest - Jeremy Bates

by Jeremy Bates

The first book of Bates' Scariest Places on Earth series. Though the stories are fictional, they are all set in real places that are creepy or scary in some way.

Suicide Forest is just outside of Tokyo, Japan and is actually called Aokigahara Forest, but commonly known as Suicide Forest because it's a place where people go to die. Bodies are often found hanging from trees. There are stories about restless spirits haunting the forest, as you would expect in such a place.

A group of friends decide to explore the forest when weather reports divert them from their original plan of climbing Mount Fuji. They end up camping there, after running into some other people doing the same thing. They encounter natural hazards in the forest in their quest to find morbid evidence of the forest's reputation and there is some antagonism between Ethan and his girlfriend's male friend, John Scott, who came along results in typical male posturing and competition.

When they find the abandoned belongings of a woman, mysterious screams are heard in the night and one of their companions is found hanging dead from a tree in the morning, the situation quickly turns into one of survival in a massive forest where they are lost and running out of supplies.

The book is very well written and scary to the point that I had to stop after a few chapters at a time. Horror enthusiasts will love it! The foreign setting and concerns over whether the authorities would respond in the way those in the characters' own countries would lends a sense of immediacy and disorientation in an already engrossing story.

The explanation for what was happening is close enough to plausible to make a good story as well, but one question was left unanswered and I'm docking half a star for that. Otherwise this is an easy 5 star read.

Aokigahara - 4.5 stars...
Suicide Forest - Jeremy Bates

I absolutely love books with unique settings so when I came across this series I was completely psyched! This first book is set in Aokigahara and it's about a group of ESL teachers living in Japan that want to climb Mt. Fugi before they leave. On the day of their trip though, the weather takes a turn for the worse and their climb gets delayed. So in order to kill time, they decide it would be fun to camp for a night in Aokigahara, then hopefully climb Mt. Fugi the next day. Once they get in the forest though, a number of things start happening and their "fun" camping trip turns into their worst nightmare.

I can honestly say that I never want to visit Aokigahara after reading this book but I had tons of fun reading about their trip! LoL It was creepy and intense and Bates kept me in suspense the whole time. I thought the horror element was nicely done too. It wasn't too over-the-top which I really liked and thought lent the story some added realism.

The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars was because there were a few minor plot holes here and there that probably could have better fleshed out. For example:

The group's ready acceptance of two strangers, Nina & Ben, into their camping trip?;  Ethan agreeing to climb the same, exact tree with rotting branches that John Scott just fell off of?; John Scott- a hard core military guy with bags of shrooms?; The group's ability it seemed to not eat or drink hardly anything but still function normally?; Neil acquiring food poison from what food?; John Scott's ability to up and walk & run with a crutch right after a compound fracture?...

(spoiler show)

None of those things distracted from my enjoyment of the story though. It was tremendously good and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a thrill! As soon as I finished reading it, I vowed to read every other book in the series and I immediately bought the second book Catacombs online. I can't wait to start reading it and see what awaits me in Paris. : )

*I read this book for my 2016 Halloween Book Bingo: ~Grave or Graveyard~ square

Suicide Forest - Jeremy Bates

I knew I hadn't done a review of this!

As you can tell I wanted too! As I’ve just seen Jeremy Bates has released his Newest edtion to His “World's Scariest Places Occult & Supernatural Crime Series” “The Catacombs!” What really gripped me about this book was this History of were it was based. I absolutely love the “Aokigahara” Aka to us the suicide forest. All of Jeremy's book's are based on Real life places of mystery. And I honest can't wait to get my nails in to the 2nd book to this. Plot was full on from start to finish and he really makes you feel you are there. I loved the twists in the plot too but there were a couple of characters I didn't like. But they got killed off so it's ok lol!

All in all a great book and definitely one to read.
