The ideology of Republican Motherhood promoted the innovative concept that women could be of some value to the new nation. By emphasizing a woman's role as that of a good, virtuous, moral wife and monther, the traditional sphere of a woman's influence was expanded slightly. Although this was a revolutionary event in that it recognized a woman's capabilities as more than ornamental, it still acted to reinforce several of the gender roles as defined by Western European patriarchy in a number of ways.
