review SPOILER ALERT! 2020-04-26 18:25
Reading progress update: I've read 100%.
Tenant for Death - Cyril Hare

Well, it turns out RL kept me busy for much longer yesterday than I'd anticipated, so I really only got back to this book today.

That said, I truly enjoyed it -- even the fact that the murderer turned out to be the most obvious suspect, in the end, didn't bother me half as much as it had in An English Murder

I also like the fact that Hare lets the murderer choose his own destiny -- he is a likeable enough person; and clearly, though his motive doesn't justify taking the law into his own hands, it is more than understandable, and arguably the victim was actually by far the greater villain.

(spoiler show)

The more books I read by Hare, the more I find I'm coming to him less for a fiendishly-constructed mystery -- none of the three books I've read so far was exactly that -- but for his wry humor and incisive observation of people and society.  As for Mike, his technique of cutting from one scene to another, chapter by chapter, works well for me; much better than a linear narrative.  I (too) could have done with some of the two investigators' speculations on motive, means and opportunity -- particularly at a moment where, as a reader, you had to have been sleepwalking through the book not to have clued in to the solution, at least in its very broad outlines -- but by and large, this was yet another enjoyable read, and I'm definitely looking forward to continuing to explore Hare's fiction.

I woke from cryostasis a prisoner. My crime? I have no idea.

I was stuck with a hundred other women, all headed to who knows where. Captive in a dank, dirty cargo hold.

Then, out of the darkness, came Solair.

A handsome alien. Golden skinned. Horned. The dashing captain of a pirate ship. They rescued us--he gave my people food, shelter, and promised us safety. In exchange?

He took me for himself.

But the people who captured us, haven’t given up. They want us back. They’re powerful and will do whatever it takes to find us. The only thing stopping them?

Solair.

He wants me. And what he takes…

He keeps.

Rescued by the Alien Pirate is book one in the Mates of the Kilgari series by Celia Kyle and Athena Storm.

I’ve been on a Sci-Fi Romance kick lately. The cover and title intrigued me, so I decided to give this new series a try. I’ve liked other books by Celia Kyle, but have not tried Athena Storm.

The concept sounded good, but unfortunately the women introduced; especially our lead heroine killed this book for me.

Varia our heroine. When we meet her she is imprisoned on a spaceship with several other women who have popped out of the cryo-stasis they where put in. Their are still many women in the cryo-stasis; besides the few that’s tubs have stoped working. They don’t know why they are their and she’s become the de facto leader. She is not a nice person. I’m not sure what the authors where trying to go for with her, but she came across as ungrateful, aggressive, demanding, and just all around an awful person/character. She was so mean to the Kilgari, alien pirates, that saved her and the other 106 women from certain death. All she did was pick a fight with our lead hero Solair. All her conversations where a fight. She did not utter one word of Thank You nor did she engage in a calm discussion about anything. Instead she was irate with the Kilgari aliens. Not sure if she got better or changed her attitude, but the fist impression of her turned me off.

Solair our pirate alien Captian of the Queen and all the Kilgari aliens are such nice guys. I like the Kilgari race, but I felt sorry for Solair and all the Kilgari. They are all bending over backwards to help the Human women. They have limited resources and are trying to make due to accommodate all the new mouths to feed and well the women are comeing across as ungrateful. As for Solair our hero, Varia showed no respect to him even though he’s the Captain and his whole crew are making sacrifices for these women. It was just sad to see these nice aliens not get more respect.

Their are a lot of secondary characters introduced. We meet several other Human women and other Kilgari aliens. The alien guys are awesome and relatable, but the human women are eh.

As for the romance between Solair and Varia I never felt it. I stoped at 30%, so not much was happening on this front only that Solair feels a strong pull towards Varia and thinks that she is his fated one and only mate. I didn’t get any chemistry between them only fighting.

I wanted to like this one, but Rescued by the Alien Pirate was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Athena's Champion
Athena's Champion - Cath Mayo,David Hair

by David Hair & Cath Mayo

First book in the Olympus Trilogy.

This is written in present tense. I can see why in the first chapter. It gives it an ethereal, mystical past feeling and as it follows some known mythology, it could have made a good start to the story if it hadn't carried on in present tense throughout.

As that's what it did, it reads rather slow. The story itself is interesting so I persevered, but by 18% it was becoming a real chore.

I'm not sure how closely it follows the actual mythology as I'm not that familiar with the Greek stories, but my impression is that it's pretty close. The plot and action are good and I liked the main character. My only problem is that it dragged terribly and could have been a really good read if it had been written properly in past tense. Why is this a thing? No Classics, NONE, are written totally in past tense!

The writing itself was very good. The authors are obviously able to write well. I just hope they progress from using present tense. Unfortunately I'll never know because once stung with this, I never go back to the author again.

REVIEW BY MERISSA - When Darkness Follows (Beyond the Grave #4) by Athena Daniels
When Darkness Follows (Beyond the Grave #4) - Athena Daniels

When Darkness Follows is the fourth book in the Beyond The Grave series, and we reunited with both TSI and Debunking Reality. Rachel has called Debunking Reality because of a murder-mystery that involves her. Unfortunately she can't remember what happened, and wants to find out what happened to her friend, whilst clearing her other friend's name. Once Daniel hears she is involved, nothing will keep him away.

As is typical with Athena Daniels' books, nothing is quite as it seems. There is enough tension and paranormal activities to keep you both turning the pages and also on the edge of your seat. We see more of Pia, with Nate showing up occasionally. However, the focus of this story really is on Daniel and Rachel. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I was left with some unanswered questions.

The writing is superb, and pacing exceptional, and the transition from one scene to the next is flawless. However, for myself, the ending felt a bit rushed. That being said, I would still highly recommend this book. The whole series is outstanding, and so is this story.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
