Book Review - No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham
No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham - Brigid Coady

No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham is a witty modern day Charles Dickens story. A Christmas Carol meets Great Expectations with a more feminine wedding theme running through it.

This novel is a funny and sometimes slightly sad story. I really enjoyed this, and there was enough pink glitter to keep me happy. It reminded me of those feel good Christmas films I love to watch throughout December every year.

I highly recommend this for fans of chick lit and romance.

Here's to all the Maids of Honors and all that they do!

Enjoy some great Romance Novels with Maids of Honors in the lead.

My lists are never in any particular order.

1. Wild Texas Rose by Jodi Thomas

Twenty-five-year-old Rose McMurray may be beautiful, smart, and capable of running her family's ranch at Whispering Mountain, but she's backed away from marriage three times without giving anyone reasons. Everyone thinks she is a coward, afraid of any adventure, including falling in love. She's never done a single wild or reckless thing in her life...until now.

Duncan McMurray, like Rose, was adopted into the family. As a Texas Ranger, he swears he'll never settle down and marry. He's been Rose's guardian angel since they were kids but for the first time in their lives he's the one who has caused her to be in danger. Somehow, he has to protect her from an outlaw gang determined to kill her without letting Rose know of the danger she's in. He's convinced that her heart can't take the stress if she knows...the only question is can his heart take the nearness of her.

When opposites collide the adventure begins...

2. Battling the Best Man by Elley Arden

On the cusp of a brilliant Chicago medical career, Dr. Kory Flemming rarely gets a vacation from her demanding brain injury fellowship, but she can’t say no to maid of honor duties in her best friend’s wedding. Hometown or not, being in Harmony Falls, Pennsylvania, isn’t easy, especially when the only man smart enough to trump Kory’s high school academic achievements turns out to be a sexy, accomplished adult up to his old, flirtatious tricks.

Will Mitchell has been destined for success since the day he was born. After spending his formative years racking up academic honors, it was only natural for him to be named the chief operating officer of his family’s thriving company. He has it all - more or less - so when the target of his high school infatuation turns up hot and haughty at his brother’s wedding, Will decides he wants her, too.

An innocent dance at the wedding reception leads Kory and Will to an illicit tryst in the coat checkroom, and the game they’ve been playing since high school changes into something more serious. The new attraction takes Will and Kory by surprise, until a failed merger and family tragedy threaten both their professional goals.

Now, Will’s struggling to preserve his reputation as “the successful one” and Kory’s stuck in Harmony Falls watching her illustrious medical career slip away. Worse yet, maybe the only way to get things back on track is to work together. Can they put aside their rocky past and ignore their titillating present in order to secure the future for the people they adore?

4. Tall, Dark & Hungry by Lynsay Sands

Terri had flown from England to help plan her cousin's wedding, but paying for a New York hotel room was like giving blood! She had an alternative: the new in-laws were offering lodging.

Of course, the Argeneaus were a certifiably odd bunch. There was the sometimes chipper, sometimes brooding Lucern—a "vampire romance" writer. There was the wacky stage actor, Vincent. She couldn't imagine Broadway casting a more ravenous singing-and-dancing Dracula. And then there was Bastien. Of this unique cast of characters, he seemed the tallest, darkest and hungriest—and his effect on Terri was decidedly delicious. Just looking into his eyes made her want to serve up her innocence on a silver platter. And she had a feeling the love feast was about to begin.

5. Death's Angel by Heather Killough-Walden

As the former Archangel of Death, Azrael has always stood apart from his brothers. Cursed to rule from the darkness, he is not only one of the four favored archangels, but the very first vampire, and king among his kind. Sophie Bryce is a woman scarred by the dark secrets of her past. Though she is overwhelmingly attracted to the brooding archangel, she simply cannot believe that she is the one fated to be with such an extraordinary being. But Azrael has known differently from the moment he laid eyes on Sophie and he will stop at nothing to win her heart - even if he has to fight an army of unimaginable evils to do so...

6. Baiting the Maid of Honor by Tessa Bailey

ulie Piper and Reed Lawson have nothing in common. She's a people-pleasing sorority girl hiding behind her perfect mask. He's a take-no-prisoners SWAT commander who isolates himself from the world. But when they're forced together at their friends' posh destination wedding, one thing is clear--Reed wants Julie more than he wants his next breath. Which is why he's not about to stand by when she's dared to seduce another man.

Julie wants neat, tidy sex, so she could get back to what she does best--making everybody else happy. She never expected to slip into a dark bedroom and have her mind blown by rough, demanding hands, and a sinfully filthy mouth--neither of which belong to the best man. One night should have been all Reed needed to get the blond temptress out of his system, but when one taste is nowhere near enough, he'll be forced confront the effects of his hellish past. One that may push Julie away forever...just when he realizes he can't live without her.

7. Always the Vampire by Nancy Haddock

It's not easy being a dutiful maid of honor when you're a vampire in the Sunshine State...

Cesca Marinelli has been slacking on her duties as a vampire princess, but she will be the best maid of honor ever for Maggie's Victorian wedding. However, when her mostly-human honey, Saber, falls ill due to a magical construct called the Void, she knows she'll have to go beyond the call of bridesmaid duty...

The Void is affecting every supernatural being in Cesca's afterlife, including her shapeshifter ex, Triton. To counter the Void's reign of terror, Cesca must fully summon her vampire powers-which may lead to her own doom.

8. Kissing the Maid of Honor by Robin Bielman

Sela Sullivan is resolved to be the best maid of honor ever, even if it means tolerating the best man. Insufferable, too-handsome Luke Watters is not only the guy who humiliated her at a kissing booth in high school, but he also happens to be her best friend’s older brother. Positive he’s the same arrogant jock, Sela vows to focus on her duties and steer clear of the frustrating—and frustratingly tempting—Luke.

As a world-renowned extreme-sports photographer, Luke is used to undertaking life-risking adventures. But risking his heart for the beautiful Sela Sullivan, who clearly still hates him for his rejection all those years ago? He didn’t see that coming. Sela inspires a passion he’s never known, and the more time they spend together, the more he craves her. But can he prove to the maid of honor he’s become a man of honor?

9.  Always the Last to Know by Crystal Bowling

Wearing a Maid of Honor dress that very well makes the South want to rise again, Jess Reynolds is prepared to walk down the aisle at her best friend's wedding. It's just that things keep getting in the way, like a sex-crazed coworker, an annoying brother-of-the-bride, and a handsome and horribly charming friend posing as the Best Man. As it turns out, Jess might just be the last one to know everything, including the workings of her own heart.

10.  Taken By You by Dorothy Elizabeth Love

Thus far, Leila Chamberlain's structured life has been filled with trying to please family and church members while making a success of her day care business. Because her home sits above the day care, Leila's life has come under the watchful eyes of many of the church parishioners. The parents, staff and children all respect her, as they have seen no evidence of an immoral lifestyle. Despite the sometimes intrusive nature of some of the church members, she is driven to secure more collaboration in the community with churches to bring in more business. Little time or thought has been spent on developing personal relationships with the opposite sex.

Reese McCoy has been consumed with making a success of his shipping company, especially since his bitter divorce where he ultimately lost a custody battle for his son. His aim is to eventually move his business closer to the east coast so he can be near his son and facilitate easier visitations. Being an ex-football player, Reese has certainly enjoyed his fair share of women, but his ex-wife has scarred him as far as seeking any emotional attachment from women.

What Leila and Reese are not aware of is the manipulating going on in the background to get the two of them together. Their friends, Chi and Parker, are getting married in a week and are using the festivities to pair the two together and let nature take its course. Beginning with their meeting in the airport, it is obvious that Leila and Reese are taken with one another; however, there are also forces at work who desire to keep them apart at all cost.

The Last Kiss - Brigid Coady

I received a copy of this short story from the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This is a short story, easily read in a spare 10 or 15 minutes and has an interesting concept. We often remember our first kiss with someone important, but do we remember our last kiss? Maybe you don't realise it will be your last, or maybe it was a wistful farewell or a chaste kiss on the cheek. Last kisses are often more poignant and important than that first kiss.

Because it is such a short story I don't want to go into anymore detail about it here. However it is safe to say that the author manages to convey the emotional turmoil of the narrator and the whole story behind the last kiss very well in the short word count she has.

The Last Kiss - Brigid Coady

Jane Hunt Writer First Steps

The Last Kiss is the contemporary equivalent of a short story in a woman's magazine so prevalent in the '70s.

The story's ambience is a little like 'Brief Encounter' you're not hopeful for a happy ever after. The concept is modern and something most can relate to. I loved the thread of hope which ran through the story and the twist at the end.
The characters are realistic and despite the brevity you empathise with them.

I read this is in less than ten minutes so it is ideal for a coffee break read.

I received an ARC from Harper Collins UK HarperImpulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
