Unexpected
Chocky - John Wyndham

That ended in a place I did not expect before I started. It is disquieting indeed, but more from being guilty of emulating the mum than anything else.

And because almost every adult involved was ghastly.

(spoiler show)

I kinda loved that it veered so.

I'm discounting a star because this being my second read of a book of his, I noticed and got irked by Wyndham's penchant for making women the overcautious anxious frets (sometimes warranted) while the men are all calm, cool and collected (sometimes even when unwarranted). He does not say that each are not sometimes right in their approach, but makes those approaches kinda married to their sexes, and it grates.

‘What have you been doing to Mr Caffer?’ I asked.
‘He gets annoyed,’ said Matthew. ‘There was one time when I wanted to know about the pressure of light, and another time when I told him I can see what gravity does, but I don’t see why it does it. I don’t think he knows why

LMAO! I reckon uppity middle grade teachers will forever sweat that one coming.

So far, a vacation from hell, digs at societal pressure to make babies, comparisons between religious beliefs and imaginary friends, and some cringe inducing comments on adoption.

And the vague sense of unease over the kid's questions, of course.

I love how Wyndham packs these page turners.

Chocky - John Wyndham

Chocky tells the story of 12 year old boy, who all of a sudden has an imagenary friend. His parents have to deal with these changed circumstances and they have to ask themselves, if their son is turning mad or if he is possessed by some foreign entity.

My second Wyndham and as much as I loved The Day of the Triffids, I didn´t like Chocky. I couldn´t stand these horrible do-gooder parents (the mother is a stereotypical 1960s housewife and the father a condescending jerk) and I was totally unimpressed by the ending. 150 pages of boredom and a plot like molasses. A huge disappointment.

Chocky: Classic Radio Sci-Fi - John Wyndham,Full Cast

bookshelves: fraudio, play-dramatisation, sci-fi

Read in October, 2009

As it's a national holiday (all saints day 1st november) we've been out raking leaves from the lawns, bringing in stocks from the woodshed, drinking a can in the beer tent and generally agreeing it's blinking great for shop owners to have a Saturday off.

So the sun, that only shows its scalp along our crucible rim at this time of year, has now disappeared completely and the fire is roaring and I'm settling down to this audio. Is this the same as the film series called Chocky, Bride of Chocky etc? I'll have to check out IMDB

ETA - Hahahaha - I've 'muxed ip' two concepts - those horror films featuring a psychopathic ventriloquist doll are called Chucky.
