A very short apocalyptic story from the perspective of a cat. Bad things are happening, and by the end of the story bad things are still happening with no indication that things will get better. But the woman does the best she can to make sure her cat will be okay.
I came across this today while looking for other things. It made me think of my own cat (who would probably be doomed because she doesn't have any experience killing anything larger and more nutritious than a cricket) and the stray cat I and at least five other people take care of.
The sliver of hope for the cat was nice, but I generally like stories and books to have more hope to them than this one. Especially these days. I'm to the point where I'm considering going through my book collection and offloading anything apocalyptic, grimdark, etc. because I just can't.
Even though I'm moving in a couple of months, I seem to have a penchant for buying books. I mean, my bookshelf is teeming with books that I still haven't read and WHAT DO I DO? I BUY EVEN MORE BOOKS. Ugh, I dread when I'll have to lug these sluggers with me to the Post Office for shipping. BUT ANYWAY LET'S BE CHEERFUL. LET'S LOOK AT THE AWESOMENESS I BOUGHT AND HAVE READ!
The Books That I've Read:
1. The Winner's Kiss - Marie Rutkoski
I LOVE the Winner's trilogy. The Winner's Crime was on my Best Books of 2015 list, The Winner's Curse was onmy Best Books of 2014 list. I nominated The Winner's Crime in the Epic Reads Book Shimmy Awards and probably have mentioned these books at multiple points, in multiple posts in this blog (5 Fantasy Authors I Fangirl Over,Preview of 2015 Books, Review: The Winner's Curse, TBR: Releases to Watch Out For, Review: The Winner's Crime, My Reading Profile, & more). It should thus come as no surprise to you that I pre-ordered The Winner's Kiss and spent the 29th reading that book. Also spent the weekend and week before trying to sneak peeks at the book through Amazon excerpt, which is an obsessive habit I have when I reaaaaaally want to read a book (until I shake and distract myself by doing something else).
Ahem, anyways. This book surprised me in a lot of ways, all of them good. I also understand why they changed the covers -- the girl in the ball gown no longer fits the horrific scenes of war. If the first book set the grounds for the differences between the two countries and the romance, establishing our link with Arin and Kestrel; and if the second book delved deeper into strategy, games, political intrigue, alliances and quiet rebellion amid heartbreaking loss; then the third book was about all of that coming to head. War. Violence. The consequences of the politics between these three major countries. The differences in beliefs and how they've shaped our characters' attitudes and hopes but how there's still common ground to be had. The power of love and stories, forgiveness and new life amid an onslaught of death. As always, lots of character development, beautiful writing, romance, political intrigue, strategy, intriguing world-building, and more. Yes to these books.
Well slap my arse and call me Bertha, this book moved me.
I’ve had a great deal of difficulty finding books that I actually give enough of a shit about to finish in recent years. So for me to finish a trilogy… and then go back and re-read the fucking thing is amazeballs. And I fell in love with the plight of the characters in this story from the very moment that I met them.
The background of the world is the gloriously undead. The shambling and rotted masses of the infected. In a world where the common cold and cancer (ALL CANCER) are a thing of the past, the genetically engineered super viruses joined together and had an unexpected side effect… RESURRECTION!
But Brain eating aside, the rest of the world continued. The apocalypse happened, and life moved on. Isn’t that just awesome? there are still cities, utilities, presidential campaigns, TV shows… and the news media has changed in such a way that now the most trusted news outlet sites are blogs, because bloggers didn’t lie about the issue when traditional news did. It’s awesome.
In this tale we follow the crew from the After the End Times news site. They’re three 20 somethings on the presidential campaign as a candidates official press pool. The writing is fresh and easy to follow, and the tone is so absorbing that I honestly read the book in about 3 or 4 sittings around work. I couldn’t put it down, I didn’t just read it, I fucking devoured it.
Mira grant kept the pace flowing at just the right speed, and added conflict and conspiracy with just the right timing that the reader is propelled, page after page, into the heart of a story that is gritty and real, despite the zombies, and shows a tenderness that is not often found in many horror thrillers of it’s ilk.
I don’t want to spoil anything for you for this book because I’d hate for anyone to have done that for me but suffice it to say, if you like thrillers and zombies then this book is definitely worth your time. The characters are likable, the writing is clean and easy to follow, and most importantly (and terrifyingly in my opinion) it’s absolutely believable. The hubris of mankind releasing something unchecked and being unaware and unready for the consequences, but adapting and surviving any way? That happens at least once a generation. And this is an excellent example of what could be. I can’t recommend it enough.
Happy reading peeps!
