Immortally Yours
Immortally Yours - Lynsay Sands

Argeneau, Book 26

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Beth Argenis:
Cullen “Scotty” MacDonald:
There are people but I waited too long to write this and now I don’t remember any names *insert face palm emoji here*

The Story:

I love Ms Sands writing. Always a fun and funny tale with a side of smex. This story is no exception. A rich backstory for an Argeneau cousin and her life mate that was willing to wait for her. They both had some things to overcome but I think they did so well.

The Random Thoughts:

-I think Beth should totally make her Immortal dating app.
-Kudos to the narrator for flawlessly executing all of the accents.

The Score Card:

Immortally Cursed (Immortally Cursed #1) - Stephanie Rowe,S.A. Bayne

Her life is one anyone would want for all eternity, but that’s exactly how long Justine Bennett has to be the Guardian for the Goblet of Eternal Youth. Being an immortal bad ass in the City that Never Sleeps should have been exciting but Justine has become quite bored, after she hasn’t gotten to behead anyone in centuries and the celibacy oath she took two hundred years ago is getting to her. But all that changes when Derek LaValle shows up at Justine’s door determined to do whatever it takes to put an end to the curse on the LaValle male line.

This delightful romance is loads of LOL fun that keeps readers in stitches with chuckle worthy dialogue and funny, unique characters that live in a refreshingly different world that readers can really enjoy. The characters are strong and really stand out as they entertain readers with their stunning wit and sarcasm. And readers can’t help but get a kick of delight as the very charming and tempting as hell Derek LaValle meets Justine and the chemistry electrifies the pages as they engage in a kind of tug of war game between killing each other or giving into their carnal desires despite all the rules.

This fast paced plot keeps readers well entertained and thoroughly absorbed with all the high-jinks, suspense and a treasure trove of unique elements and entertainment. Readers can’t help but enjoy Satan’s part in all of the splendid snark and excitement of this story, although his part may seem a bit over the top, it really fits well with the story and causes even more chuckles to the story. The world is imaginative, fresh, super fun and one that readers want to visit time and again while Justine and Derek’s relationship brings pop, sizzle, and enthusiasm to life.

Immortally Yours (Argeneau #26) by Lynsay Sands
Immortally Yours: An Argeneau Novel, Book 26 - Michael Rahhal,Harper Audio,Lynsay Sands
Beth has had a thing for Scotty, the Scottish laird for as long as she's been an immortal but unfortunately, Scotty has proven time and time again that he's far from Beth's number one fan. With most of the North American hunters in Venezuela, Scotty shows up in Toronto to lend a hand to the North American hunters. Beth's libido might be happy to see Scotty again but she's not exactly pleased to be working with a man who thinks so little of her.  Scotty and Beth become intertwined when they are forced to travel to B.C. to deal with the daughter of the head of the Russian Council, exposing Beth to a second attempt on her life. Knowing someone is trying to kill you is a tough thing to deal with but Beth is actually more uncertain about the fact that Scotty seems to have changed his mind about how he feels about her.

This is the twenty-sixth novel in the series and so by now, it's pretty formulaic. Unlike the previous books, Sands doesn't try to add anything new to the world.  Immortally Yours, is entirely predictable with no real twists and turns. Sure, Sands tried to turn the identity of the person trying to kill Beth into a mystery but a two year old could have figured out who the antagonist is from the very beginning. Because the mystery is so uninteresting, the only real thing to draw the reader is the relationship between Beth and Scotty.

As a female protagonist, I like Beth very much which is not something I often have to say about Sands's female characters. Beth is very strong, independent, smart and most importantly, she's a survivor, who has no interest in being saved or having her past erased. Beth has completely accepted who she is and the path that led to her current identity. Beth was sold into prostitution by her father, had her virginity auctioned off to the highest bidder and was beaten regularly until an immortal intervened in her life. For most of Beth's life she worked as a prostitute, determined to be self reliant until the end.  I absolutely love that she pushed back against the shame society and even Scotty tried to make her feel.

This review wouldn't be complete if I didn't take the time to talk about Sands's treatment of sex workers in this novel. Sands floated back and forth between the socially constructed hooker with a heart of goal, and the money grasping evil whore.  It would not be understating it to say that Sands's treatment of sex workers is absolutely toxic and misogynistic. Scotty spends much of the book disparaging Beth because of her past as a sex worker.
Now that he was being forced to confront his feelings on the subject, he admitted that before meeting Beth he'd always thought prostitution to be the lowest of trades. He'd been raised to believe prostitutes were shameless, deceitful whores who cared only about coin... and he couldn't bear knowing that Beth had once been one. (pg. 200)
Odilia, in part based her hatred of Beth on the fact that Beth was once a sex worker.
"You are a prostitute! A whore! You probably spread your legs for half of London back in the day, and half of Toronto since you got here. He will believe it, and he will see how cheap a slag you are and how unworthy you are of him and the love he proclaimed for you. (pg339)
Even characters like Magnus are more than happy to make excuses for Scotty's slut shaming by suggesting, "We come from an earlier era, one that forged our morals and opinions. We were taught prostitution was an abomination to our Lord God. Of course you would struggle with it." Even when Scotty does do a turn around, it's only because Beth has redeemed herself in his eyes with her willingness to care and sacrifice herself for others. It was further cemented by him realising that Beth chose to continue her profession because she didn't see that she had any other options. By telling her story, Scotty came to realise that not all women prostitute themselves because "it was easy coin, or because she enjoyed the power of controlling men with her body."

To make matters worse, we learn that Scotty's disdain for sex workers is because of his hatred of his cruel mother.

Immortally Yours - Lynsay Sands

Well... Here we have Drina's only surviving member of the brothel she was a Madame of. We sort of know how she was turned...and Scotty was mentioned then as the rescuer when Drina and Beth confronted the rogue who had attacked the retired ladies of the evening, though not by name.

I was baffled as I'm almost positive Scotty was the name of one of the Immortals Dressler had in his clutches. I'd have to hunt that last book to see.

Beth is... well, let's put it this way, were I the H, I'd be wary of ticking her off. In the first chapter or two, she's taken down a rogue by nearly splitting him down the middle.

Scotty - H - is at times (in the h's words) an ass, stubborn, bossy, and just plain stupid. He keeps trying to convince her to let them do a 3-in-one so she won't have to remember her past. Besides the whole bit that she'd essentially have to be taught everything - again, there's also the little bit that he seems blithely unaware of - that as per Vampire Interrupted, it's forbidden to perform on Immortals. he's head of the UK council and unaware of this?! Even better, as demonstrated in the aforementioned installment, this gives the immortals performing the ritual permanent access to the victim's mind...and the ability to control them.

I kept hoping one of the others would grab him by the ear and "explain" things to him.

Then there's the ubiquitous villain - a fellow female Enforcer and rogue victim the H took in as a child and at some point (like, shortly after rescuing the h and Drina), assumed SHE was his lifemate so instigated a sexual relationship. He realized his mistake a few months later when for some ungodly reason, he undertook to attempt to persuade the European council the h was nuts and slept under the same roof as her. Naturally, the one who was nuts (and perhaps would have benefited from the forbidden 3-in-1) was the girl he'd raised.

What I didn't really understand is why, when they realized it was an inside job, they didn't call forth a meeting and read *everyone*. But as per usual, they poke into everyone's thoughts over personal stuff yet it never seems to occur to anyone to start reading minds when trouble starts.

Immortally Yours: An Argeneau Vampire Novel - Lynsay Sands

I should never, ever open a Lynsay Sands book to "read a few pages" that way lie bad decision book club moments where I spent way too much of my night reading rather than sleeping while being a little out of it because of infected sinuses and general malaise.

For 125 years Beth Argenis has been nursing a crush on Cullen "Scotty" MacDonald, ever since he rescued her from a rogue immortal and her life had been changed by becoming immortal. She has dealt with a lot of her issues but he hasn't dealt with his and now they have to work together while someone is hunting vampires. Before they can be a couple they have to admit to their issues with each other and their attraction for each other.

Not bad but a bit by-the-numbers. Still fun and it did keep me engaged until well past my bedtime
