Yet More Bothersome Tropes
Love Overdue - Pamela Morsi
Extreme Exposure (Audio Download) - Kaleo Griffith,Pamela Clare

Of course this complaint isn't far off what I usually complain about, but I feel like this is something n which we can all agree . . . maybe. I keep reading these over and over and it really gets under my skin now.

First: The (framed as) "prudish" heroine who wishes she could be promiscuous or go out and bang random dudes, etc. Usually she has a best friend or sister who does and she laments not being more like her. Okay, if you're me you're annoyed because what in the hell kind of thing is that to aspire to? Less STD and pregnancy scares, ooh, life is so boring! Physical intimacy actually means something to you, you're so juvenile! (Reference back to my irritation at heroines considering this sophisticated behavior. )

But where we all can agree is on wondering why is what these heroines are so bad? What is making them feel that being who they are is a bad thing? Are we supposed to nod our heads in agreement and say "you suck, change!"? I don't get it. You do you, girl. Let the grass stay greener because if you're not that person, trying to be is just going to cause you problems.

Second: The best friend who encourages the heroine to change who she is to be more promiscuous or whatever. Sorry, but I think you're best friending wrong. Aren't you supposed to be telling her she's great as she is? Not trying to dress her up like Streetwalker Barbie™ and telling her to throw herself at the first available cock that passes muster. Shouldn't the BFF understand who she is and know that this isn't going to work out well for her? It just reeks of, "I love you, but . . ." to me, something that drives me bonkers. Supportive is one thing, pushing her into something emotionally and physically dangerous is another.

Again, these things are probably just me and I likely wouldn't have noticed myself if I hadn't read them over and over. But unfortunately what has been noticed cannot be unnoticed.

WHYYYYYY, VICKI PETTERSSON
Swerve - Vicki Pettersson

IS THIS IN FLIPPING FIRST PERSON?!?!

Why does anyone think a mystery or thriller should be in first person?! Or romance! Soon there will be nowhere to turn for non-tedious/ridiculous storytelling. Looking at some quoted lines from this book . . . really, people think like that? No, they don't. It doesn't make sense!

Why are so many of the books that sound really interesting in frigging first person now?! It's like the authors-pandering-to-adult-YA-readers is infecting everything.

I really truly want want to do harm to the people encouraging authors to abandon third for God awful first. The worst are the ones like the book I finished today. Switching from first to third and back. If you can't tell your damn first person story in one POV without switching that should be a flashing neon sign that your story needs to be in third. Which is probably why I'm so extra mad that this book that sounds so good is in first. I wasn't expecting the last one to be in first at all—totally unpleasant surprise—and then even more heinous that it was mixed third/first. That on top of constantly getting excited over a blurb or newspaper review only to find out the story is in first has lead to severe frustration. Sigh.

In a completely OT aside: Some of the "how I'm feeling about this" emojis or whatever are hilarious. They make no sense!

Page 209.
Lead Me On - Victoria Dahl

I want to DNF this so badly. Why have I not DNF'd this? It is so bad. Jane makes me want to punch ALL THE THINGS. Every thing she says and does is so idiotic and/or assholish. I want to fucking rip out my eyes than read anymore of her horrifically disgusting back story.

(The most recent is that now Jane knows that Chase knows who she was and what she did. Especially since a THIRTEEN-year-old Jane née Dynasty Alexis was at a party where she sat on the lap of a 17-year-old Chase née Billy Chase grinding on his dick getting him hard so he'd fuck her until one of his buddies warned him of her age and who her step-father was. He pushed her off, she shrugged and went off to fuck someone else. Realizing this Jane asks him if they slept together. Chase tells her no. Jane: 'Some of the men . . . I don't remember some of the men I was with.' Well, I'm off to vomit up my intestines. Thanks! Then she starts accusing him of stupid shit like she hasn't been paying attention to what he's said and done the last two hundred pages. Like he isn't begging to get to know her while she's all, just fuck me and shut up.)

(spoiler show)

Why would you put a back story like that in a romance? Which actually I could take if it were executed deftly. I've read plenty of messed up back stories on screwed up characters in romance before and they have been complex and interesting, but here she just clobbers the reader over the head with it constantly. It's non-stop. Plus it is so unnecessarily over the top. And there is no growth, she's all over the damn map about herself. It's frustrating as shit. There should be some growth by now! Maybe it'd be better if there were a shred of something redeemable in Jane. Maybe if Jane even tried to treat Chase like a human being. Maybe if there was something, SOMETHING, between them besides sex. And that sex is so bad. I wanted to cry in the lead up to the last sex scene because I so dreaded reading it. Thank God it was in Chase's POV at least. I really couldn't handle any more of Jane's fucked up, disgusting thoughts during sex.

And this may be a very rare instance where I actually bear animosity toward those who gave this four and five stars. I just . . . can't.

WHY AM I STILL READING THIS?!

Reblogging Reviews

Can we, as a community, agree not to reblog others' reviews?

I don't like this reblogging system at all, really, but unlike everything else that can be reblogged the reviews (and book status updates) are the worst to me. That's someone's personal feelings, opinions, and words on a book and I detest the idea of them being essentially taken and the attribution being lost. It also steals comments and likes that should rightfully go to the reviewer. It seriously bothers me. (I haven't posted a review yet that wasn't initially imported, but I've been seeing it a lot with other people's reviews.)

If not stopping reblogging the review period, can we at least only post a portion of the review and link back to the original review for people to see the rest? Or use the URL post? That way likes and comments are directed where they belong.

I really hope we see a change of this system and when we like someone's post other people who follow us will be able to see it instead of needing to reblog. But until then we should protect each other. Or, tell me straight, am I the only person this bothered by it?
