I love these series of articles despite what they do to the TBR pile.

Here we have the next story line for the Lumberjanes series and we get to catch up with the Greek gods in this one!!

Diane is back and with a quest that the girls have no choice but to get in the way of. I'm not going to add the synopsis of each comic so I don't spoil things from one issue to the next but these tell a cohesive story that continue the involvement of the Greek gods past the first story line of the series. It also brings in some of the other characters of Greek mythology in their typically Lumberjane way.

I will never tire of this series.

As always, they use the names of some awesome women as exclamations, April says both in this set, first exclaiming "Holy Nakano Takeko" in #30 and then "Sweet Mary Shelley" in #32. Be sure to check out their stories at the links because both are hardcore lady-types.

I know, I know, this isn't my most in depth review, but not much more to say than what I have already in previous posts about just how much of my heart these girls have. There's great representation here, the girls work together, their differences make them stronger, and they aren't all perfect at everything. They each work at what they know and grow in what they don't and sometimes the best lines comes from the strangest places. I think Molly has the best moment of this set.

I can't wait to read the next adventure these girls go on!

The Devil has come to Los Angeles…

Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub.

Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? D.B. Woodside from Buffy and Rachael Harris from Suits! This better come to British shores, but wait... It's Fox. That means it'll be cancelled after the first season, because that's what they do to any sci-fi/fantasy show I enjoy. Almost Human, Dark Angel and Firefly are the most notable examples. Sigh. I'll be watching anyway. You never know, having Neil Gaiman's name attached to this might entice his millions of fans to watch it and encourage Fox to break with tradition and create more than one or two seasons.

Lucifer looks irresistible. As the devil says, he's 'walking heroin' and it will 'end badly'. I might as well enjoy the ride while I can.

"Die Berufene" hat mich so sehr gefesselt und beeindruckt, wie das schon sehr lange keinem Buch mehr gelungen ist. Ich habe die Rezension paradoxerweise lange vor mir hergeschoben, weil ich nicht wusste, wie ich einerseits dem Buch gerecht werden und andererseits nicht zu viel verraten sollte!

Ich bin völlig "blind" an das Buch herangegangen, ohne das Geringste darüber zu wissen - und hätte mir vorher jemand gesagt, dass es sich um einen Endzeitroman handelt, hätte ich vielleicht nicht danach gegriffen. Und mein Gott, hätte ich da eine literarische Kostbarkeit verpasst! Es ist nicht "nur" ein Endzeitroman, es ist so, so viel mehr. Eine Geschichte über das Erwachsenwerden unter ungünstigsten Umständen, über Mut im Angesicht des scheinbar Aussichtslosen, über Selbstlosigkeit ungeachtet des eigenen Risikos... Es ist brutal und rührend, intelligent und emotional, gnadenlos konsequent und dennoch auf verquere Art und Weise hoffnungsvoll.

Und es ist so originell, dass mir manchmal der Atem stockte ob der schieren Genialität der Geschichte.

Aber vor allem lebt das Buch von seiner kindlichen Heldin, Melanie. Die ist ein kleines Genie, macht sich über alles tiefgehende Gedanken und ist dennoch anrührend unschuldig - und das bis zur letzten Seite, obwohl sie bis dahin vieles erlebt und vieles tut, was diese Unschuld im Keim hätte ersticken können. Es ist manchmal geradezu erschütternd, wie innig und selbstlos sie immer noch fähig ist, zu lieben und zu vertrauen, obwohl ihr selber herzlich wenig Liebe in ihrem kurzen Leben entgegengebracht wurde.

Auch die anderen Charaktere sind großartig, und es ist schlicht und einfach unmöglich, sie in Schubladen zu stopfen. Sogar diejenigen, die scheinbar Unentschuldbares tun, haben oft gute Gründe dafür - oder gar keine andere Wahl. Macht es das besser? Das ist schwer zu sagen. Auf jeden Fall macht es es problematisch, diese Menschen gedankenlos zu verurteilen. Der Autor fordert den Leser und seinen moralischen Kompass gnadenlos: man ist geradezu gezwungen, mitzudenken und sich vielleicht auch zu fragen, wie man selber in der gleichen Situation gehandelt hätte. Sehr gut fand ich, dass sich jeder Charakter im Laufe des Buches weiterentwickelt, denn Stillstand kann hier buchstäblich der Tod sein...

Ist das Buch spannend? Oh ja, und das auf vielfältige Art und Weise. Es gibt blutspritzende, rasante Action (gelegentlich mit Ekelfaktor) und einen irrsinnigen Wettlauf gegen den Tod, aber es ist auch auf leise Art und Weise spannend, die emotionale Entwicklung der Charaktere zu verfolgen. Auch die essentiellen Fragen, die hier aufgeworfen werden, fand ich intellektuell spannend: Was macht einen Menschen überhaupt zum Menschen? Wieviele Opfer darf die Wissenschaft fordern, wenn es um das Überleben geht? Und vieles mehr, wobei der Autor nie in kopflastige, dröge Pseudo-Intellektualität verfällt.

Ich war sehr beeindruckt vom Schreibstil, der mühelos die verschiedensten Nuancen beherrscht. Mal klar und schwerelos leise, mal brachial und atemlos verworren... Immer atmosphärisch und eindringlich.

Das Ende hat mich erwischt wie ein Schlag in die Magengrube, und dennoch könnte es meines Erachtens kein perfekteres Ende geben. Als ich das Buch zuschlug, schwirrte mir der Kopf... Und die Geschichte begleitete mich noch tagelang in Gedanken.

Fazit:
"Die Berufene" ist ein Buch, das über Genregrenzen hinaus wirkt, und das glasklar und eindringlich. Einerseits ein Endzeitroman, andererseits ein Roman über das Erwachsenwerden und die grundlegendsten Fragen des Lebens, mit einer großartigen kindlichen Heldin, die einem schnell ans Herz wächst... Ich habe beim Lesen die volle Bandbreite der Emotionen erlebt und konnte das Buch einfach nicht mehr weglegen bis zum unerwarteten, grausam-genialen Ende.
