Shotgun Wedding Review
Shotgun Wedding - Maggie Osborne

Annie Malloy is in a fix. She’s gotten herself into the worst kind of trouble and there’s really only one way out. It seems the town’s handsome new sheriff, Jesse Harden, has taken a shine to her–and has offered her a way to end the scandal once and for all. Marriage, she hopes, even a hasty one to a virtual stranger, will put an end to the gossip and return her life to something like it was before. But Annie soon finds that the quiet life she once lived has been exchanged for one full of chance, desire, and the breathtaking possibility of true love.

Jesse John Harden has always followed his instincts and has no doubt that he can turn this marriage of convenience into a true marriage of the heart. With each day that passes the bond between him and his pretty new wife grows stronger and the spark between them gets hotter. But Annie is hiding a secret that could destroy their delicate happiness. Now Jesse must convince Annie to let him stand beside her to face the past so they can have a chance at a happy future.

Review

There is lots to enjoy about this engaging western romance where our heroine has decided not not marry but finds herself pregnant and the naivety of her previous points of few on being a modern woman are harshly exposed.

Our hero, because of his own up bringing, is both a realist and a feminist. He is great and I have a lot of compassion for our heroine as well.

The details of pregnancy explored in this book adds depth as does the very true to history response to the heroine's out of wedlock condition.

The growth of the characters is charming as is the love they come to share.

This said I wish we had more couple time and less time spent in her former lovers spaces and that the conflict at the end of the book hadn't been based on a very dumb choice by the heroine and dumb reactions by the hero. It would have been an excellent book instead of just a good one in that case.

Kick Ass Historical Romance Heroines
The Promise of Jenny Jones - Maggie Osborne
Wild Silver (The Delaneys, #9) - Iris Johansen
Never a Gentleman - Eileen Dreyer
To Catch a Bride - Anne Gracie
The Lion's Lady - Julie Garwood
Lord of Scoundrels (Scoundrels #3) - Loretta Chase
The Protector - Madeline Hunter
A Lady's Lesson in Scandal - Meredith Duran
Caine's Reckoning (Hell's Eight, #1) - Sarah McCarty
Slightly Scandalous (Bedwyn Saga #3) - Mary Balogh

You can't walk for tripping over kick ass heroines in Fantasy Romance, Science Fiction Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance. It seems a woman has to have super powers to really take care of herself.

We do find a nice collection of these physically tougher or self defense trained ladies in Romantic Suspense and Contemporary Romance.

However, these kinds of heroines are less available in the historical storyline. This may be accurate historically and I agree that overly kick ass heroines in all the genres can be annoying but I love variety in my characters and the backstory of a woman who has these skills in a time period that is less than encouraging of such things makes for a layered leading lady.

So, here are my Historical Romance Heroines who can throw a punch, shoot a gun, wield a sword, throw a knife or are otherwise very clever and kick ass that I would recommend you read.  I can never pick favorites so these are in no particular order.

1. Miss Grace Fairchild from Never a Gentleman

2. Christina Bennett from The Lion's Lady

3. Jenny Jones from The Promise of Jenny Jones

4. Jessica Trent from Lord of Scoundrels

5. Silver Delaney from Wild Silver

6. Anna de Leon from The Protector

7. Desi from Caine's Reckoning

8. Nell Whitby from A Lady's Lesson in Scandal

9. Freyja Bedwyn from Slightly Scandalous

10. Ayisha from To Catch a Bride
