Echo - Pam Muñoz Ryan

A coworker recommended this book to me at least a year ago and it took me until now to read it. I'm very glad I did though. (I read part on desk and that was a mistake because I kept wanting to cry.)

The stories each on their own are compelling, covering (probably) lesser-known aspects of well-known time periods. And they all come together in interesting ways.

The book is very long and by the time I got to the end I had kind of forgotten the beginning (much like the first time I watched Moulin Rouge... it took me three days to get through it). So as I was reading the ending I was kind of like, "What is happening? This feels a little like a cop out." But then I went and reread the beginning and remembered a kind of important fact that I had forgotten which really changed the way I was reading the end and made it more enjoyable.

Esperanza Rising
Esperanza Rising - Pam Muñoz Ryan

Having to flee to California, Esperanza and her mother struggle with challenges that the Great Depression brings. This is a story of a family rising above financial and acceptance issues. The leveling system is The Lexile, reading level 750L. Students can create a character map, this will show the progression of the characters and how moving and the time period affects them.

Echo
Echo - Pam Muñoz Ryan compelling format, and magical realism without taking agency from its characters or taking motivation away from them. I really admire/appreciate the skill needed to walk that line.

If you haven't read this book yet, it is a really creative, moving, middle grade novel. I highly recommend the audio book, and, despite the fact that my daughter has the gorgeous hardcover on her night table, I encouraged her to listen to the story as well. Music is such a huge part of this story, so, for people less familiar with the pieces (like me), the music that accompanies the narration helped me to better imagine the character's feelings, and added another layer to the story.

Esperanza Rising
Esperanza Rising - Pam Muñoz Ryan

Esperanza Rising is a book about a young girl named Esperanza who lives with her family in Mexico but a sudden tragedy forced them to flee to California during the Great Depression. Esperanza's life was turned upside down and forced to work to help support her family through the situation. The text displays her struggles and how she overcomes them. When I read this book I felt connected to it. It reminded me of how strange and out place I felt when I moved to the US as a little girl. This book could be used successfully while teaching about immigration and the Great Depression. It could also be introduced while discussing point of view in the classroom.
